February 11th

The difference a day can make

Lady Spartans go 1-1 in back-to-back games

MANCHESTER– The Lady Spartans hit the road to Manchester late in the week to meet the West Delaware Hawks on Thursday, Feb. 4– a make-up of the first match-up of the season which was postponed from early January.
The change in the game, or the change in start time to 6 p.m., or the weather change or something changed and threw Solon’s play for a loop, and they fell uncharacteristically to the Hawks, 49-29.

Spartans send nine to districts

Solon second to Mt. Vernon; Spartans qualify for regional dual meet Feb. 9

CASCADE– A total of nine Spartan wrestlers will advance to the district meet Saturday, Feb. 13, at Central Clinton of DeWitt.
Solon’s varsity wrestling squad took second place overall at the sectional meet held Saturday, Feb. 6, at Cascade, just points behind of first place Mount Vernon. The Mustangs took the team scoring with 244 points, just a nip and a tuck ahead of Solon with 240.5. Dubuque Walhert was a distant third with 157.5 points, while host Cascade, Monticello and Anamosa rounded out the bottom half of the standings.

Council says yes to golf cart changes

Carts to be allowed on city streets all year, weather permitting

SOLON– There was only one question remaining– whether or not to allow golf carts on Highway 382 (Main Street) in Solon.
Solon’s council members already verbally consented to two other major revisions to the city’s golf cart ordinance: a requirement for a city license plate, and the elimination of the seasonal April 1 to Oct. 31 operating period.
But questions regarding Highway 382 prompted a lengthy discussion at a Feb. 3 council meeting.

Enquiring minds want to know

Lakeview Elementary students dive into science projects

SOLON– Civilized humanity has always liked to put things on display.
The Great Expositions and World’s Fairs prominently displayed the latest in future thinking and scientific wonder.
That inquisitive spirit lived on, in part, at the Lakeview Elementary Science Fair, held Saturday, Jan. 30, in Lakeview’s large gym.
Inside the event, sponsored by Lakeview’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), 78 students in grades kindergarten through fourth grade manned nearly 60 exhibits.

Solon, townships to form new fire agency

Audit leads to probable organizational changes for Solon Fire Dept.

By Chris Umscheid
Solon Economist
SOLON– A new fire service agency will be created to serve the City of Solon and three townships surrounding it.
In September 2015, a state audit of the financial accounting of the Solon Fire Department raised some eyebrows; specifically, with the volunteers’ use of Benevolent Association donations.
The audit, triggered by a citizen complaint, had two sides, said Solon Mayor Steve Stange. One side involved the Benevolent Association, which he declined to comment on.

Iowa ranked 4th in nation

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye men played two games last week, taking down Penn State, 73-49, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, then traveling to Illinois Sunday and winning, 77-65.
Good defense, Adam Woodbury getting a career-high 15 rebounds and 28 bench points helped Iowa win its 15th straight home game against the Nittany Lions.
In the win at Illinois, Woody came through with 14 rebounds, 10 points and led the team with four assists.
The big guy from Sioux City has grabbed 10 or more rebounds on five of the last six games.

Alligators and chicken wings

Walkin'

On our recent trip to Florida, it was too cold to see any snakes or alligators.
As reported last year, I ran into a lot of snakes on a bike ride on the Cape Haze Pioneer Trail. It was a little later in the year and a lot warmer. Totaled, I passed two-dozen serpents on the 30-mile round trip including one extra big one that coiled and took a strike at my rear wheel as I passed. At the end of the ride I talked with a local and mentioned the last encounter.
“Did the snake have a white mouth?” he asked.
“Yes,” I replied.

Unusual friendships

Food For Thought

I caught part of a recent television program dealing with inter-species friendships in the animal kingdom. When I tuned in, they were discussing an unusual relationship between a Labrador pup and a young lion. They did a lot of racing around and playing just about the same as animal siblings do, and I thought about the kitten we had at one time. She came into a household that already had two female dogs, who got along peacefully, and she was soon adopted by the youngest (and smallest) of the two, who tended to mother her.
