Spartans overcome 10-point halftime deficit against Bobcats for 60-55 win

SOLON– The Spartans started strong, but finished stronger.
After squandering a 12-4 first-quarter lead against the Western Dubuque Bobcats, the Solon varsity basketball team found itself down 10 points at halftime.
The Spartans used a 21-9 run in the fourth quarter to seize control of the game for a 60-55 home conference win Dec. 9.
“Our successes this year have come at the hands of our defense,” said Solon Head Coach Jason Pershing. “Friday was no different. We defended at a very high rate, limiting their possessions and finishing off with a rebound.”

SOLON– It turned cold Dec. 6 in Solon.
Both the Lady Spartans and the Sabers of Central DeWitt had trouble executing offensively in the WaMaC opener.
Solon shot 27 percent from the field, including 1 of 11 (nine percent) from the three-point line, but still had pulled ahead for a two-point lead to start the fourth quarter.
But the Lady Spartans would only muster six points in the final frame and fell to Central DeWitt, 40-36.

For the 13th straight time, the Hawkeyes were too much for the Cyclones and Iowa won last Saturday, 26-9.
Thomas Gilman (125), Brandon Sorensen (149) and Sammy Brooks (184) picked up bonus points for Iowa, but Head Coach Tom Brands said there is a lot of work to be done.
“We were in some holes and the good thing is we bailed ourselves out of some holes,” said the head coach. “Our guys need to be thinking about scoring points when they’re out there. Guys don’t fall down when you blow on them. They fall down when you put them down.”
