Al Havens’ festive holiday display

TIFFIN– Al Havens’ holiday spirit is on full display.

The Tiffin resident and city council member annually hosts his own miniature Christmas village at his Ponds Court residence. With a dimming of the lights, the display comes to life with 50 miniature lit buildings and monuments. A moving train cart, as well as an ice-skating rink with animated skaters and a ski slope with a cycling ski lift round out the exhibit to a backdrop of holiday music.

“One of my favorites is the ‘57 Chevy on a carousel,” he remarked, pointing to a vintage Chevrolet store display.

Democrat Royceann Porter wins county supervisor seat

Topples Hemingway in special election

JOHNSON COUNTY– In a historic victory, Democrat Royceann Porter will assume the vacant seat on the Johnson County Board of Supervisors.

Porter won decidedly Tuesday, Dec. 18, capturing 56 percent of the vote and defeating Republican candidate Phil Hemingway, who took 43 percent of a total 9,658 votes. Voter turnout was 9.98 percent.

The county special election was scheduled to decide the remaining two years of the late Johnson County Supervisor Kurt Friese, a Democrat, who died unexpectedly at the age of 54 in October.

Cost cuts necessary for NLPD facility plans

Bid exceeded project estimate by over $1 million

NORTH LIBERTY– Enthusiasm for the future station of the North Liberty Police Department (NLPD) has been hampered by its construction bid, which has exceeded the project cost estimate by over $1 million. Parties directly involved in the project are looking for measures to cut $700,000, with additional funds necessary to fulfill the construction.

The North Liberty City Council unanimously approved initial plans, specifications and estimated cost for the Police Department Building Project during its Aug. 28 session.

Santa returns to North Liberty for his annual breakfast with children

NORTH LIBERTY— A Christmas tradition continued in North Liberty as Santa Claus appeared at the Recreation Center on Saturday, Dec. 8, for the annual Breakfast with Santa event. Between 250 and 300 kids spent a ltime with the Jolly Old Elf discussing their hopes and dreams for Christmas presents, as well as their behavior over the past year.
The event has grown over the years, since starting in 2006, said Recreation Supervisor Matt Meseck.

Katie the Service Dog brings renewed hope to Solon man

NORTH LIBERTY– Two friendly, furry creatures were spotted at the annual Breakfast with Santa event at the North Liberty Recreation Center on Saturday, Dec. 8. One was the North Liberty Lions Club’s mascot; a six-foot tall lion who greeted kids and adults alike, freely dispensing hugs and posing for pictures. The other was a ten-year old German Shepherd named Katie who, despite being on the job and in her uniform (service dog vest), graciously accepted petting and pats from complete strangers.

NORTH LIBERTY– A unique approach to physical wellness in North Liberty has arrived in Kepros Physical Therapy & Performance.

The office opened in August as the third Kepros branch of the Corridor, providing primarily physical therapy, as well as performance training. While the practice treats a fair number of athletes, Kepros welcomes people of all ages and lifestyles, approaching both from a proactive and reactive standpoint.

Winter arrives but work continues on Oak Hill

CCA construction manager gives an update on progress

TIFFIN– Even with the onset of winter, work continues on the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District’s Oak Hill Elementary in Tiffin. The school, scheduled to open in August 2019, will house fourth- and fifth-grade students from Tiffin Elementary and North Bend Elementary in North Liberty. Amana Elementary and Clear Creek Elementary (CCE) in Oxford will continue to house their own fourth- and fifth-graders.

North Liberty photographer named bronze medalist at international photographic competition

Jeanna Hegewald of Portraits by Jeanna is honored by peers and jurors for high-quality photography

NORTH LIBERTY– Jeanna Hegewald of Portraits by Jeanna in North Liberty was named a bronze medalist during Professional Photographers of America’s 2018 International Photographic competition. Hegewald’s work will be on display at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia, Jan. 20-22, 2019. This International Photographic Exhibit is held in conjunction with Imaging USA, an annual convention and expo for professional photographers.
