Lady Spartans excited for 2020-2021 basketball season

Lady Spartans basketball ready to control what they can, nothing more, nothing less

SOLON– “We have had a great two weeks of practice,” Lady Spartans Head Coach Jamie Smith responded. “The energy and effort has been at a high level. We have got better.”
With the COVID-19 pandemic swelling and the promise of a pandemic modified season to contend with, the Lady Spartans under Coach Smith rely on a recurring theme.
The theme under Smith has been “‘Program>>>>Team>>>>Me.’ This served us well the past two years and has been a big part of the growth of the program.”
But the global pandemic has affected the Lady Spartans’ preparation.

Class 2A District 6 champs recognized

Spartans named to all-district squads

SOLON– Several Spartan varsity football players were recognized for performances both on and off the field as the Spartans ended the 2020 campaign Class 2A District 6 Champions and Class 2A quarterfinalists.
Senior running back Jackson Ryan was recognized as Overall District Most Valuable Player, was named to the First Team All-District Team and received Academic All-District honors.
Senior wide receiver Colton Hoffman was named Offensive Skill Most Valuable Player, received First Team All-District recognition and was acknowledged for his Academic All-District performance.

Moel is Military Hero of the Game for UI v. Nebraska

Survivor of USS Gambier Bay honored by Hawkeyes

IOWA CITY– Solon’s Dean Moel, a survivor of the sinking of the USS Gambier Bay by Japanese forces during World War II, will be honored by the University of Iowa football program during its Friday, Nov. 27, game hosting Nebraska.
Moel was selected as the Military Hero of the Game and will be recognized during the radio broadcast and social media posts leading up to the gridiron contest.
Moel was born a little bit northeast of Sutliff, in Cedar County, and spent time in Central City, Cedar Bluff and Nevada (Iowa) before settling in Cedar Rapids.

Public comments on in-person learning as COVID cases increase

SOLON– Solon High School students want to hang onto school for as long as they can.
A handful spoke to Solon Community School District board members during a Nov. 19 meeting, expressing appreciation for in-person learning and their desire to keep going.
Those sentiments were echoed by an almost equal number of parents present for the session, offset by the concerns of two others.
Speakers for the public comment portion of the agenda spilled into the adjacent room due to social distancing guidelines, with remarks held to a time limit.

District watching for uptick after holidays

SOLON– The Solon Community School District (SCSD) is keeping its eyes on the numbers.
Rising COVID-19 infection and quarantine numbers among students and staff came close to closing two buildings in recent weeks, and the district is already looking at possible impacts from the upcoming holiday season.
The school system remains poised to move classrooms, grade levels or even an entire building to online learning while instructing as many students as possible in-person, according to Superintendent Davis Eidahl.

Solon house destroyed by fire

High winds hampered firefighters

SOLON– A Solon family lost its home to a fire fueled by high winds Wednesday, Nov. 18.
The Solon Tri-Township Fire Department and assisting mutual aid agencies responded to a call reporting a fire with flames showing at 330 Marshek Ct. shortly after 1 p.m., according to Asst. Chief Scott Wolfe.
Based on the call information, Wolfe activated a second tier call for mutual aid immediately.
Firefighters arrived at the Randy and Sandy Cline residence to find heavy fire and smoke showing from the back of the garage, he said.

MVC releases winter sports guidelines

Ongoing pandemic drives spectator numbers down

NORTH LIBERTY– The Mississippi Valley athletic Conference (MVC) has released its winter sports guidelines for member schools, including Liberty High School in North Liberty. The policy is based on guidance from the governor’s office, the Iowa Department of Education, the Iowa Department of Public Health, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and the Iowa High School Athletic Association.

2020 Iowa Girls Coaches Association Volleyball Teams announced

IOWA CITY– Eight local high school student athletes were named to the Iowa Girls Coaches Association’s (IGCA) 2020 All-District, Senior All-Stars and Academic All-Stars teams.
Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) Calia Clubb and Hailey Pollock were named to the Class 4A SE All-District Team. Clubb, a junior, also earned an Honorable Mention spot on the Class 4A All-State Team after leading the Clippers with 243 kills. Pollock, a senior, produced 221 kills this season.

Liberty High’s Gabbie Schroeder verbally commits to Drake

NORTH LIBERTY– She plans to become a Bulldog but first she has one more season as a Bolt.
Liberty High’s Gabbie Schroeder recently verbally committed to play volleyball for Drake University, joining teammate and 2021 commit Addie Schmierer. The 5-8 junior defensive specialist had 19 assists and one kill for the Lightning with 174 digs this season. Schroeder was also second on the team in ace serves with 31.

2020-2021 CCA wrestling preview

TIFFIN– Due to the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District returning to all-online learning, extracurricular activities, including athletic practices, are on hold until the students return to in-person/onsite learning on Monday, Nov. 30. However, the Clipper wrestlers aren’t just sitting around biding their time.
“The kids are running, working out and practicing individually,” said Coach Kyle Forness.
