Tiffin Good Neighbor Meeting Jan. 30

TIFFIN– The City of Tiffin may soon consider a rezoning and subdivision plat, and invites the public to an open-house style meeting being held to explain the proposal.

North Liberty city audit released

NORTH LIBERTY– Winkel, Parker & Foster, CPA PC recently released an audit report on the City of North Liberty, Iowa for the year ended June 30, 2018.
The City’s receipts totaled $29,980,354, an 11.8 percent increase from 2016. The receipts included $8,986,095 in property tax and commercial/industrial tax replacement, $4,389,642 in tax increment financing revenues, $11,123,529 from charges for service, $2,305,609 from operating grants, contributions and restricted interest, $33,622 from unrestricted interest on cash investments, and $419,531 from other receipts.

NORTH LIBERTY– The Parks and Recreation Commission of North Liberty is seeking public feedback about what recreation opportunities you and your family currently use, and what additional opportunities you and your family desire.
Take a brief survey by Jan. 31 to help the commission while it looks to plan for the future needs of North Liberty.

Watershed Coalition cost-sharing program

JOHNSON COUNTY– Clear Creek Watershed Coalition will be hosting two landowner meeting opportunities to learn about the Iowa Watershed Approach and sign up for technical assistance for conservation best management practice installation. Land from approximately Penn Street south and Jones Boulevard west drains into Clear Creek, and landowners are encouraged to attend to learn about eligible conservation practices, and the availability of grants to cover 75 percent of cost for storm water quality improvement projects.

NL Library presents a History of Civil Rights

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Library will host a presentation on the History of Civil Rights in Iowa and the U.S. by the African American Museum of Iowa at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 25.
Civil rights and civil liberties are something the African American community spent hundreds of years fighting toward. Before much of today’s well known federal legislation was passed, state and local community members organized grassroots efforts that led to nationwide changes.

EPWORTH– The week started Tuesday, Jan. 16, with a loss at home, 32-21, to the Central DeWitt Sabers and continued to tumble Friday, Jan. 19, in Epworth with a loss to the Western Dubuque Bobcats, 63-38.
The slow, low-scoring affair on Jan. 16 was the result of four very close periods, however the Lady Spartans were unable to summit a quarter.

Four conference dual victories

Spartans take down Western Dubuque

TIFFIN– The Spartan varsity wrestling squad moved its dual meet record to 17-5 on the season with a pair of conference sweeps.
Solon traveled to Tiffin Monday, Jan. 21, for a rescheduled double dual with Clear Creek Amana (CCA) and Center Point-Urbana. The Spartans overcame an early Clipper lead for a 46-24 win, then blew past the Stormin’ Pointers, 54-21.
Thursday, Jan. 18, Solon headed up to Epworth for a double dual with Western Dubuque and Central DeWitt. The Spartans overwhelmed the Sabers, 47-24, and scored a solid victory over the Bobcats, 40-24.

IDA GROVE– With a champion and two runners-up, Solon’s varsity wrestlers claimed second place in the 25-team Herb Irgens Invitational in Ida Grove Jan. 20-21.
Gilbertville-Don Bosco (ranked No. 1 in Class 1A) won the team title with 251.5 points, followed by Solon with 182.5. Sergeant Bluff-Luton (141.5) and Woodbury Central (137) were neck-and-neck for third and fourth place.
“I really thought our guys wrestled well in the two-day tournament,” Solon Head Coach Blake Williams noted. “We were a solid second ahead of many good teams from Western Iowa.”

Coons’ 33 points not enough in OT 63-61 loss

SOLON– The just don’t get much closer than that.
Tied at 57 after a see-saw battle through the first four quarters, Western Dubuque used a 6-4 advantage in overtime to defeat Solon’s varsity boys, 63-61, at home Jan. 19.
The loss dropped the Spartans to 9-5 on the season.
In each of three losses in 2018, Solon has scored 61 points. The last two, on the road at Mount Vernon Jan. 12 and home Friday against Western Dubuque, were 63-61 margins.
The Spartans and the Bobcats were neck-and-neck throughout the game, with the lead never moving past four points in the first half.
