Old Gold Diner January activities

• Thank you to Jay and Helen Proffitt for sponsoring the Dec. 14 meal. It is always a pleasure when they come. If you missed it this year, mark your calendar for Dec. 13, 2017, to come for their next sponsored meal.

• Bingo is every Tuesday and Thursday. Penny bingo begins at 11 a.m. and play following lunch is for prizes, with a black out for a free Old Gold Diner meal ticket as the prize.

Iowa Raptor Project family day Jan. 7 at Macbride nature area

SOLON– This month, the Iowa Raptor Project (IRP) at the Macbride Nature Recreation Area will be featuring the American bald eagle. The IRP is hosting its monthly family day Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2095 Mehaffey Bridge Rd. NE in Solon.
Bald eagles are plentiful in Iowa right now, especially near open water. Visit Spirit the bald eagle at the Raptor Center and learn all about their keen eyesight and scavenging skills. There will be a scavenger hunt and an “Eagle Eye” notebook craft for recording observations.

Open House for Solon Center for the Arts is Sunday, Jan. 15

SOLON– The wait is finally over. The Solon Fine Arts Department along with Solon Spotlight will host an Open House in the new Center for the Arts. The event will take place on Sunday, Jan. 15, from 2-4 p.m. Guided tours will be available throughout the afternoon, as well as light refreshments. Carve out some time in your busy schedules to stop in and say hello.

Jerry Linderbaum Memorial Alumni Basketball Tournament Dec. 31

SOLON– The Solon Athletic Booster Club will sponsor the Jerry Linderbaum Memorial Alumni Basketball Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 31. Tip off is scheduled for 9 a.m. with proceeds from the event going towards the Jerry Linderbaum Scholarship Fund and Solon Basketball Program.

SOLON– The Iowa General Federation of Women’s Clubs is the proud sponsor of a scholarship program unique to the state of Iowa. Each year, thousands of dollars are awarded to graduating high school seniors who will attend post-secondary schools. Scholarships are awarded based on achievement, volunteerism, and in some cases, financial need or field of study.

Solon Robotics can drive Jan. 7

SOLON– Solon Robotics is collecting cans and bottles on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017. Please drop off donations behind the middle school, where the buses park, between 9 a.m. and noon. Students on the teams will be going around town collecting cans and bottles that have 5-cent deposits.

Main Street moving west

Council approves concept plan for new downtown project

SOLON– Main Street may be growing.
Solon City Council members gave an informal thumbs up for a plan to replace three residences on the downtown area’s west end with a two-story mixed-use building.
At a Dec. 21 council meeting, local developers Jim Hauer, Mark Pattison and Brad Randall, doing business as HPR Investments, presented their proposal for lower level commercial space with upper level residential condos on the south side of Main Street, west of Big Grove Brewery.

Doubleheader win at Carver

Last Tuesday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, the women and men played a doubleheader, with the women cruising 83-48 over Kent State and the men winning, 84-73, over North Dakota.

Something wasn’t right when the Hawkeyes started their game against Kent State.
The Hawks missed four straight shots while Kent State made three straight.
The 6-0 lead, with only three minutes gone in the game, was enough for Head Coach Lisa Bluder to call a 30-second timeout and send in the second five.

Loretta A. Miller

Loretta A. Miller, 100, of Solon, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2016, at the Solon Nursing Care Center.
Funeral Mass was held at Wednesday, Dec. 28, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Solon, with burial at St. Mary Cemetery in Solon. Visitation was Tuesday at the Church, where a Forrester Rosary was recited and a Parish Vigil Service was held. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in her memory, in additions to masses that can be offered in her memory.
