Creek Boys race to 14th place

FORT DODGE– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School was represented in the 2016 State Cross Country Meet Saturday, Oct. 29, in Fort Dodge by the varsity boys and Kaylie Barker.
The Creek Boys placed 14th in team points in the Class 3A meet, which was won by Mount Vernon-Lisbon. Wyatt Sedlacek led the Clippers with a 42nd-place finish in 17:14.1. Barker was the sole Creek Girl to qualify for the meet and posted a 60th-place finish in 20:38.5.

Women of Troy sweep the Muskies and dominate the Bulldogs

Iowa City West advances to state volleyball

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy had little trouble with the Muskies of Muscatine in a Class 5A regional semifinal volleyball match Tuesday, Oct. 25, at West High, sweeping the visitors, 3-0. West took the first and second sets, 25-11, and finished the match with a 25-12 final in the third set. They advanced to the Region 6 Final Monday, Oct. 31, at West High against Bettendorf, who beat West in late August in tournament play, 2-1, and brought a 20-11 record into the final.

Trojans live to fight another day with 24-17 win in first round of 4A playoffs

BETTENDORF– They puzzled the pundits and baffled the Bulldogs as Iowa City West High’s 10th-ranked Trojans pulled off a 24-17 upset over No. 5 Bettendorf Friday, Oct. 28, in the Bulldogs’ kennel to survive the first round of the Class 4A football playoffs.
Bettendorf has often been a wrench in the gears of the Trojan football juggernaut, having knocked West out of championship contention in 2011 with a 45-13 pounding, and again in 2013 (27-24) as well as during the regular season in 2014 and 2015.

Veterans Day lunch at the library Nov. 11

NORTH LIBERTY– Veterans and guests/family are invited to attend the North Liberty Community Library’s second Veterans Day Appreciation at the North Liberty Community Library. This year the library staff is offering a lunch and presentation by retired National Guardsman Dave Lewis on Friday, Nov. 11, at 11:30 a.m. in the library.
“Our mission is to be a community gathering place and we’re pleased to host this event to honor and recognize the veterans and service members in our community,” said Adult Services Librarian Elaine Hayes.

Police department releases results of 2016 community survey

NORTH LIBERTY– The results of a North Liberty Police Department survey, which launched Aug. 22 and concluded Sept. 30, are now available.

Sidewalk closure at Quail Ridge Park beginning Nov. 1

NORTH LIBERTY– Beginning Nov. 1, the northern sidewalk on Zeller Street, in front of Quail Ridge Park, will close as work starts on water system improvements. The work in Quail Ridge Park includes adding two wells and a control building.
The city will host an open house with the contractor, Gingerich Well and Pump Service, project engineers FOX Engineering and city representatives to provide additional information and answer questions about the project. The open house will be Wednesday, Nov. 2, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the North Liberty Community Library, 520 W. Cherry St.

Cedar Rapids Horsemen’s Club Thanksgiving Banquet Nov. 5

WESTERN– The Cedar Rapids Horsemen’s Club will host its Thanksgiving Banquet Saturday, Nov. 5, at the clubhouse,11808 Club Rd., in Western. Social hour starts at 5 p.m. and dinner is at 6 p.m. A fundraising auction will follow the meal. Turkeys will be roasted and ready in the clubhouse. Bring a side to share, and items for the auction. Swisher Auxiliary Annual Turkey Homemade Turkey Dinner Saturday, Nov. 5

SWISHER– On Saturday, Nov. 5, from 4:30-7:30 p.m., the Swisher Auxiliary hosts its Annual Homemade Turkey Dinner. Adult meals cost $10 and kids meals are $5. The Junior Auxiliary will host Turkey bingo upstairs through dinner. Bingo cost is $1 per game with winners receiving a turkey to take home. Arts and crafts will be offered for children attending the event during bingo.

Family Day at Iowa Raptor Project Saturday, Nov. 5

SOLON– The Iowa Raptor Project invites the public to the November Family Day featuring the Peregrine Falcon, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5.
Visitors will learn about the history of falconry and hunting with the Peregrine Falcon. The Raptor’s Nest will be open with arts and crafts and activities for kids. There will be staff and volunteers available to answer any questions.
The Raptor Center currently displays over 20 unreleasable birds of prey historically found in Iowa and is located within the Macbride Nature Recreation Area, 2095 Mehaffey Bridge Rd. NE, Solon.

CCA Supper for “Old Folks” Nov. 5

TIFFIN– On Saturday, Nov. 5, the CCA Student Assistance Team and Interact Club hosts its annual Supper for “Older Folks.” In other words, those aged 55 or older are invited to supper. Supper for “Old Folks” will serve turkey, ham mashed potatoes and a potluck of dishes the 30 or so kids bring to share.
