West boys, girls dominate at City’s Forwald/Coleman Relays

IOWA CITY– The West High track and field teams traveled across town to City High Thursday, April 18, for the Little Hawks’ Forwald/Coleman Relays and performed in dominating fashion. The Women of Troy won their meet with 132 team points, knocking the host Hawks to second with 120. The Trojans won the men’s meet with 168 points, also putting their hosts in the second-place slot with 141 for City.

Clipper ladies 4th at Washington Invitational

WASHINGTON– Jane Astor’s Clipper girls track and field team headed south Thursday, April 18, for the Washington Girls Invitational and finished the night fourth in team points. Megan Hall won the 100-meter dash and Mia Smith won in the 100-meter hurdles while a combination of Smith, Celine Fender, Ashley Prusha, Natalie Brimeyer and Megan Lukas took second in the 4x100-meter relay.

Clipper boys take second on Solon’s track

SOLON– Tony Brack’s Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers finished second to the Solon Spartans Tuesday, April 16, at Solon’s Denny Gruber Track Meet. The Clippers tied with Dyersville Beckman with 102 team points to the Spartans’ 170.
The CCA 4x200-Meter Relay crew of Josh Martinac, Tanner Bandy, Kam Kahler and Jared Ganschow took the gold and in the process set a new school record. The squad also is now the tops in Class 3A and seventh across all classes. Ganschow also won in the 800-Meter Run and Jack Murray led the field in the 1,600-Meter Run.

Voters in NL precinct 03 to have temporary polling place May 7

NORTH LIBERTY– Due to a scheduling conflict with the normal polling location for North Liberty 03 voters, North Liberty 03 voters will vote at a temporary polling location for the May 7 special election regarding the Johnson County Justice Center issue. On May 7, North Liberty 03 voter who normally vote at the South Slope Communications building on 980 Front Street in North Liberty will vote at the South Slope Communications Video Conferencing Center at 645 Liberty Way, only for this election.

Swisher Legion Junior Auxiliary garage sale to be May 4

SWISHER– The Swisher American Legion Junior Auxiliary is hosting a garage sale at the upper level of the Swisher American Legion Saturday, May 4. The proceeds from this sale will go to support the English River Outfitters. A non-profit organization that supports veterans in the town of Washington. Rain, rain, go away

County disaster designation allows for grant assistance to flood victims

NORTH LIBERTY– City officials are reporting over 8 inches of rain from last week’s severe thunderstorms.
On Monday, the city announced North Liberty saw 8.28 inches of rain in 28 hours last Wednesday and Thursday, April 17-18. Storm water systems were overwhelmed and some roads, yards and basements flooded. Streets superintendent Don Colony, a life-long North Liberty resident, said the city hadn’t seen a downpour like that since at least 1993.

North Liberty plans history walk

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Centennial Committee is looking for information from anyone in North Liberty about houses or other structures that might be included on a historic tour of North Liberty. Historic can mean either an older, historic building or any structure in which something significant to North Liberty took place.

NLFD responds to apartment fire

NORTH LIBERTY– No injuries were reported after a fire in the laundry room of a North Liberty apartment building.
The North Liberty Fire Department was dispatched Sunday April 21, at 2:28 p.m. to 20 Penn Oaks Dr. for a building fire. North Liberty Fire Department units arrived and found smoke throughout the structure and heavy smoke coming from an apartment on the third floor.
The apartment was occupied at the time of the fire and did have working smoke detectors which alerted residents.

North Liberty spring clean-up day is April 27

NORTH LIBERTY– Spring cleanup day for North Liberty residents will be held Saturday, April 27, from 7 until 11:30 a.m. at the Public Works Facility, 620 S. Calvin St. Miscellaneous large items can be brought to the Public Works facility. (Go south on Front Street to Golf View Drive. Turn right and go to Calvin Street. Turn right to Public Works facility).

North Liberty Development to host breakfast mixer

NORTH LIBERTY– In an effort to promote the city’s growing business community, North Liberty Development, a not-for-profit group of business owners and advocates, will host a breakfast business mixer on Tuesday, April 30, from 7:30 until 9 a.m. at Red’s Alehouse, 405 N. Dubuque St. in North Liberty.
At the event, local business people and city leaders will have the opportunity to mingle, network and meet one-on-one over breakfast. Learn about the 2013 North Liberty construction projects and a new business reference service by the North Liberty library.
