Officers share how to have positive interactions with police

NORTH LIBERTY– While police-involved shootings and subsequent public protests continue to pop up across the country, the atmosphere was relaxed inside one of the North Liberty Community Center meeting rooms during a special forum Aug. 21 between police and citizens.
Around 40 attendees, in addition to several North Liberty Police Department staff, met over pizza and drinks at the 90-minute “town hall” style meeting Sunday evening. A panel of about six officers answered participants’ questions, which they could either ask aloud or write down on index cards.

Back on the campaign trail

IOWA CITY– She wasn’t there for herself, but Amy Nielsen, North Liberty mayor and Iowa House District 77 hopeful, is nonetheless back on the campaign trail following a short hiatus after winning the Democratic nomination in June.
“We were kind of in first gear,” she said at a speaking event for Hillary Clinton last week. “Now we’ve gone straight to third.”

NL man accused of assault shot in leg by homeowner

OXFORD– A North Liberty man accused of a rural Oxford home invasion was shot by the homeowner, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
Aaron Douglas Kahler, 39, 645 Andy Ct., North Liberty faces charges of assault while participating in a felony, burglary second degree, domestic assault third and subsequent offense and violation of a no-contact order. after an incident Aug. 16.

Firefighters, kids cool down at annual fundraiser

NORTH LIBERTY– An ominous morning turned into a beautiful day for the North Liberty Fire Department’s annual Salute to Summer fundraiser last Saturday, Aug. 20, at Bobber’s Grill and Scales Pointe Campground.
Around 600 attended the event, said fire Capt. Chris Kochanny, which is fewer than normal. Still, he said it was one of the better events since the weather was cooler.
“In years past we’ve had issues with people getting too hot, especially kids in bouncy houses,” he said.
The only downside, he noted, was the wind.

Spartans look to improve on last year’s six-win season

SOLON– The final dress rehearsal was held Friday, Aug. 19, for the Solon Spartans’ 2016 football season with the new high school auditorium, nearing completion, as a back drop. The lights were tested, the football team scrimmaged– their final preparation before the season– and the fall athletes were introduced.
As the scrimmage was taking place, Solon alumni Marshal Koehn, playing for the Miami Dolphins, and James Morris, playing for the Dallas Cowboys, squared off in NFL preseason football.

Solon team wins EIGA tournament

SOLON– Solon’s Lake Macbride Golf Course hosted the Eastern Iowa Golf Association (EIGA) Tournament Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 13 and 14, and Solon’s team won with a two-day total of 1,465.
Eight teams and 108 golfers participated in the two day tournament, with Dyersville second with a score of 1,504, and Mount Vernon third with 1,511.

Robert and Eileen Jacobson spent the week of Aug. 4 through Aug. 11 vacationing in Pelican Rapids, Minn. While there, they helped celebrate the 90th birthday of Robert’s Aunt Lillian Rankin. Another aunt, Mildred Martinson, turned 94. The Jacobson’s son and family, Tony, Kris, Matthew, and Bryce Jacobson of Naperville, Illinois, also attended the birthday celebration.
