IOWA CITY– Johnson County Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek has released his annual report for 2010 detailing the activities of the sheriff’s office.


Record-number class graduates from CCA

TIFFIN — The largest class in the history of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district, 141 Clippers strong, crossed the stage and received their diplomas during the Commencement ceremony held Sunday, May 29.
Valedictorians Zach Manders, Hannah McGrath, Shelby Novak and Katie Weih performed a brief skit in lieu of giving speeches. School board members Tim Hennes (president) and Kathi Huebner had the honor of conferring diplomas upon family, as Maria Hennes and Ethan Huebner graduated.


NL Library volunteers have it all covered

NORTH LIBERTY– Volunteers at the North Liberty Community Library step right up, so patrons can continue reading all about it.
April 10-16 was national volunteer week, and staff at the North Liberty library recognized all the people who come together, week after week, day in and day out, all year long, to make the library what it has become.
At a volunteer recognition luncheon April 16, Library Dee Crowner asked volunteers in attendance to introduce themselves, and say a few words about why they give their time so freely to the library.

NORTH LIBERTY– Sometimes, you just need space to stretch out and breathe.
In January, Carey Sadler of North Liberty opened her new River City Pilates location in North Liberty at 595 Ashley Court, Suite 6, a move away from her former, cramped location on Oakdale Boulevard in Coralville.
Sadler said the move has already paid dividends.
“I have definitely been able to accommodate a lot more people,” Sadler said. “Now I’m in the process of trying to find teachers to teach for me, which is a good thing because business is growing.”


North Liberty Library to hold Spring Book Sale June 11 to 18th

NLFD hosts open house Friday June 10

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty volunteer fire department will host an open house at the North Liberty Fire Station directly following the Fun Days parade on Friday, June 10. The firefighters will give tours of their updated facilities, with fire trucks on display, and a bouncing house for the kids. Everyone is welcome.


North Liberty drivers should prepare for road closures, detours

NORTH LIBERTY– Jones Boulevard will be closed between Penn Street and Liberty Way for construction work starting Monday, June 6, at 9 p.m.  The duration of this closure is estimated at approximately one month.  Motorists are advised to use Cherry Street and Liberty Way as detour routes during this time.

Flippin’ flapjacks for funds

TIFFIN– The day started at 0300; 3 a.m. to civilians. There were trucks to move, tables to set up and chairs to place. The grills needed to be fired up, and pancake batter still to be mixed.
At 6 a.m., the doors opened and the crowd formed a steady line into the station that would last until noon. By 10 a.m., almost 700 people had passed through the door, well on track for the typical annual tally of approximately 1,000 people stuffed with cakes.

DES MOINES– “We gave it everything we had,” said Coach Tim Benson as the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers regrouped after a 2-0 loss to top-ranked and defending state champions Cedar Rapids Xavier in a Class 2A state quarterfinal round match at Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines.
The Clippers came into the contest, in their first state tournament appearance, as the eighth-ranked team. The coach thought they should’ve been ranked higher.


West, Kennedy split

IOWA CITY– It was a rematch 10 months in the making as the West High varsity baseball team hosted the Cougars of Cedar Rapids Kennedy last Tuesday evening for a double-header. The last time the two teams met was in Principal Park in Des Moines for the Class 4A Championship. Kennedy won that battle 11-1 in July 2010.
West dominated the more recent double-header opener with an 8-1 victory, but fell 10-8 in the nightcap.
