TIFFIN– The Creek boys, under the leadership of coach Steve Ottoson, picked up their third win in a row Jan. 31, knocking off Independence, 58-29.
The Clippers picked-off Williamsburg on the road 60-51 the week before and got by Waterloo Columbus on Friday, Jan. 27, by a 61-54 margin.
Hosting Independence, the Clippers got off to a strong start and never looked back.

Can’t get past ‘em

IOWA CITY– It was a wake-up call.
For the West High Trojans, Friday night’s battle against Cedar Rapids Jefferson was a reminder of how easily a game can slip away; and with the postseason looming, how quickly a season can end.
West was subdued early in the first period, scoring only six points in the quarter. The only consolation in the first stanza was that West tied the J-Hawks. Myzeah Batie-Gaddy put West on the scoreboard, but the Trojans soon found themselves running behind.

Walkin'

This week I continue the rather queer endeavor of coming up with a list of the people who might have murdered me.
To date suspects include Carolyn and Delores at the hardware store as I caught them ogling an Avon catalog like it was a Chippendale calendar; Roger the postmaster due to my annoying mailing schemes and Dick the insurance agent because I repaid his act of kindness with a rude dunking into the waters of Lake Macbride.
This week I implicate the entire town.
It was the spring of 1994.

Food For Thought

A good many years ago (I’ve truly forgotten just how many), this was a food column. I hesitate to call it a cooking column because it was more about the history and enjoyment of food than about specific recipes or cooking techniques. We called it “The Good Cook” for a long time, and I intended that to refer to the reader, the one in every family who makes the meals day after day, year in and year out.

William Huston

William R. Huston, 65, died Friday, Jan. 20, 2012, in his home following an extended struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. A memorial service was held Jan. 25 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Cedar Rapids.
Local survivors include his son, David (Lisa) Huston, of Swisher.
