Mary “Toots” Felton

Mary “Toots” Felton, 79, of Monticello, died Saturday May 30, 2009 at Shady Rest Care Center, Cascade.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, June 2 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Monticello, with interment in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Rev. Donald Bruggeman officiated at the services.

Ivan L. Fry, 81, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, May 29, 2009, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Services were held June 1 at Murdoch Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids by the Rev. Ed. Powers. Visitation was Sunday, May 31, at the funeral home. Graveside service was held Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors.


Charles Lyle “C.L.” Gates

Charles Lyle “C.L.” Gates, 87, of Brooklyn, died Sunday, May 31, 2009, at Brooklyn Community Estates following a brief illness. Funeral services were held June 3 at Grace United Methodist Church, Brooklyn, with the Rev. John Dodds officiating. Burial with military honors was in Koszta Cemetery, rural Marengo. Visitation was held June 3 at the church. Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn, is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial fund has been established.


Henry “Hank” George Kruzic

Henry “Hank” George Kruzic, 85, of Solon, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at his home from congestive heart failure. A Memorial Mass was held June 1 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon. Inurnment followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation was May 31 at Brosh Chapel in Solon.


Dr. Allen N. Lang

Dr. Allen N. Lang, 88, formerly of Iowa City, a veterinarian, farmer, fisherman, and family man, passed on Sunday, May 17, 2009, in Solon. A memorial service celebrating Doc’s life will be held on Saturday, June 20, at 2 p.m. at the KC Family Center, 4776 American Legion Road SE, Iowa City, 52240. The Lang family invites friends to dress casually and come with fond remembrances of Doc. Light refreshments will be served.


Doris Emmeline Lingel

Doris Emmeline Lingel, 79, of Solon, died Sunday, May 31, 2009 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Services were held Thursday, June 4 at St. John Lutheran Church in Ely. Burial follwed in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Brosh Chapel in Solon and for an hour prior to services Thursday at the church.


Jane Toy Stevenson

Jane Toy Stevenson, 86, of Cedar Rapids, and most recently a resident of Ridge View Assisted Living, died Thursday, May 28, 2009, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. A private service was held. Visitation was held June 1 at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, where a wake service was held.


Annual Spring Book Sale to run June 13-20

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Library is holding its annual Spring Book Sale from June 13 to June 20 in the library during regular library hours. The largest book sale in the library’s history, it will offer a huge selection of print material for all ages available for purchase, in addition to a variety of audio/visual material for sale. Books will be sold for $2 a bag or $3 a box. Individual print items will cost $.50 for a paperback or $1 for a hardback. Cost for audio-visual material is $2 per item.


Iowa local option tax update, effective July 1

JOHNSON COUNTY– Sales in the following nine cities in Johnson County will be subject to a 1 percent local option sales tax beginning July 1: Hills, Iowa City, Lone Tree, Oxford, Shueyville, Solon, Swisher, Tiffin, and University Heights. The total rate for these nine towns is 7 percent (6 percent state and 1 percent local option).
The remaining cities and the unincorporated areas do not have a local option tax. Their total rate is 6 percent.

June 12 – Watch for our float in the North Liberty Fun Days Parade.

June 22-29 – “Candles for a Cause” Earth Home Candles will be donating 20 percent of their sales to the North Liberty Community Pantry during this week. Everyone loves candles for themselves or for a gift. Join us in supporting the pantry through this new small business owned by Chad Chase in Coralridge Mall.
