Making Caroline proud

CEDAR RAPIDS– “Line” has been gone for two months, but losing her still shakes the West High girls varsity volleyball team to its core.
“It’s been a very emotional week” Coach Kathy Bresnahan said Tuesday night (Oct. 11) following West’s 3-0 domination of the Cedar Rapids Jefferson J-Hawks. “They’re sad, they’re angry, they’re frustrated… maybe they took some of that out on Jefferson tonight.”

Drought continues

TIFFIN– The eighth week of the 2011 football season found the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers at home against rival Williamsburg. The Clippers last faced the Raiders in last year’s second round of the postseason playoffs. In that contest, Williamsburg ran over the Clippers, 65-35, in Williamsburg.
CCA held a 17-7 halftime lead, but a flurry of Williamsburg scoring dashed any hope of victory in a 52-24 loss.
The Raiders opened Friday’s battle by scoring first on a 65-yard fumble return coupled with a good PAT kick for an early 7-0 lead.

Cedar Rapids Washington hands West second loss of this season

IOWA CITY– “We got our butts kicked.”
That was Coach Brian Sauser’s assessment of Friday night’s match-up between his West High Trojans and Cedar Rapids Washington at home. The Warriors pounded on the Trojans for a 66-37 win on senior night.
The Warriors began their first drive on West’s 47-yard line. Two first downs later, Washington was on the 7-yard line. The Trojan defense stopped them three times, but on fourth and two to go, the Warriors scored. Coupled with a good PAT, the visitors were up 7-0.

Synergy in motion

NORTH LIBERTY– There is a natural synergy created when combining the dedication of two successful Olympic gymnasts, the expert guidance of one long-time gymnastics instructor and the ardent enthusiasm kids naturally have to run, roll and jump.
Co-owners Alexandre Kolyvanov and Dmitri Trouch found a fitting name, then, for North Liberty’s new gymnastics club.

Food For Thought

I recently read (RE-read) a delightful book by Kasey Michaels, “Maggie Needs An Alibi,” about an author whose characters come to life and move into her apartment with her, complicating her life and helping her solve a murder (after a fashion). I admit that, the first time I read a book, I read just for the plot. I want to find out how it ends. The next time, I read it with a little more appreciation for the WAY the writer tells the story. I take notice of the way the story is organized and events presented.

Walkin'

The manifestations took many forms.
At first, I thought it was only one benign ghost giving us the creeps but as time wore on I realized that there were just too many strange things going on in the apartment to be explained by one ghost or spirit or entity.
For starters, we, my daughters and I, just felt we were being watched. It was creepy, but not scary like a snake or spider. In an odd way it could be comforting, a feeling that you were not alone and even being protected.
