New sign in library’s future

Preliminary work has begun near the driveway entrance of the library in preparation for installation of an LED message sign. To date, work crews have moved a parking lot light and buried the electrical service. The sign made of brick and sporting the library name and logo will make a substantial statement. The LED message will be used to announce library activities and events including holiday parties, book sales, Summer Reading Program events and pertinent city information as well.

Please note that the library will be closing at 2 pm on Friday, July 20, and will be closed all day on Saturday, July 21, for Beef Days. So, if you want some movies for the weekend, plan accordingly.

Spartans lose showdown with Marion

SOLON– The Spartans were on a roll.
But when would it stop?
It turns out it would end Monday night against Marion.
The Solon varsity baseball team ended its regular season with a win and then opened the postseason the same way.

Lady Spartans clobber Waukon, 8-2

FT. DODGE– Waukon could not afford to make a mistake against the Lady Spartans.
In the second inning, Waukon made several.
Solon jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning Monday night and never looked back against the only team in the state softball tournament with a losing record.

Senior Advocates seek funding suggestions

SOLON– The Solon Senior Advocates are seeking ideas or suggestions on how to support the many programs they provide for seniors. Advocates income relies solely on grant money, monetary awards from Beef Days committee, donations and the generosity of Bev Noska’s can redemption monies.

Education Foundation needs you

SOLON– The Solon Education Foundation (SEF) is a 501 (c) 3 charged with managing an endowment in support of the Solon Community School District (solonedfound.org). The group is seeking motivated community members interested in a volunteer position on its board of directors. The SEF meets monthly at 6 p.m. Its goals are achieved via an annual teacher-initiated grant program and by providing tax-exempt infrastructure for Partner Groups. Anyone with interest or expertise in fundraising would be particularly attractive.

41st annual Beef Days celebration

SOLON– Friday and Saturday, July 20 and 21, Solon Beef Days will hold its 41st celebration. This two-day event, traditionally starting the third Friday in July, has collected and donated over $339,000 back into the community and surrounding area since 1971.

McCaffery signs seven-year contract as head basketball coach

IOWA CITY– University of Iowa men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery has signed a new contract to continue as the Hawkeye head basketball coach for the foreseeable future. The agreement was announced Tuesday, July 10, by UI director of athletics Gary Barta.
The seven-year agreement guarantees McCaffery a minimum average of $1.66 million annually over the length of the contract, beginning with a base salary of $1.3 million in 2012-2013. The base salary moves McCaffery to the upper half of the Big Ten Conference in comparison to his colleagues.

NORTH LIBERTY– Pickleball isn’t just a fun way to exercise, meet new people and stay healthy.
It’s also the country’s fastest growing sport, one of the newest events to be added to the national Senior Olympic Games and the latest craze in parts of Puerto Rico.
On July 1, Pickleball was also the focus of a one-day tournament at North Liberty’s Penn Meadows Park tennis complex, with participants who traveled from all over central and southeast Iowa to get in the game.
