Trojans heading to state (again)

IOWA CITY– The West High Trojans came back from a 2-0 deficit to win 4-2 over the Rams of Dubuque Senior Wednesday night at home in a nine-inning Class 4A substate final.
It was a pitchers’ duel through four innings as West’s Kellen Yoder and Seniors’ Alex Steines shut-out the other’s batters. The Trojans threatened in the top of the fourth as Reid Bonner made it to third, but ended up stranded along with Declan Doyle (at second).

Not the Champs, but forever the first

FT. DODGE– They didn’t come away as the Class 5A state champions, but the West High Women of Troy returned to Iowa City as the first softball team from West to make it to the State Tournament.
And you can’t take that distinction away from them.

Not what they expected

FT. DODGE– It wasn’t the finish they were expecting.
The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers varsity softball team, under the leadership of coach Jim White, defeated Washington 6-2 Friday afternoon at the Class 4A state softball tournament. The win earned the squad the third-place trophy after a 3-0 semifinal loss to Indianola Thursday knocked them into the consolation bracket.

Lady Spartans settle for second

FT. DODGE– Ballard had seven hits, but three of them were doozies.
The Ballard Bombers earned their name in the Class 3A title game Friday, nailing three home runs, one of them a three-run shot to retake the lead, to defeat Solon’s Lady Spartans 5-4 Friday in Ft. Dodge.
The three-run homer came in the bottom of the sixth inning after Solon had rallied to take the lead with some clutch two-out hitting by Arran Weeces and Rylee Smith.

Lady Spartans in championship game

FT. DODGE– The Lady Spartans needed that first run.
It turned out to be the only one of the game.
Emily Bransky doubled in the bottom of the first inning to begin Solon’s Class 3A semifinal and Alyssa Rickels singled the run home against No. 5 Estherville Lincoln Central Thursday afternoon in Ft. Dodge.
The rest of the game was a pitcher’s duel, with Arran Weeces striking out five and scattering three hits in a 1-0 shut-out that landed the Lady Spartans in the 3A championship game for the first time.

Food For Thought

On a recent visit to the Amanas, friends and I were driving around the different villages and Madeline, who grew up in Amana, was pointing out interesting sights and telling us some of the local history interspersed with her childhood memories.

Walkin'

(This is one of a series written about a recent visit to the southwest)

While this portion of the southwest is even more bone dry than usual, the area is awash in the confluence of the spirituality of two separate cultures.
It goes all the way back to when Hernán Cortés led an expedition that caused the fall of the Aztec Empire and brought large portions of mainland Mexico under Spanish control in the early 16th century.
