Summer Reading Program

After a refreshing break for the week of the 4th of July, Summer Reading Program activities will resume again on Tuesday, July 10, with Storytime at 10:30 a.m. with the theme, “Let’s Get Nocturnal.” Storytime welcomes all children ages two through five, their parents, caregivers and siblings for a story and a craft. Teens On Tuesdays at 2, for fifth grade and up, will be creating sticky rice critters just like they do in Japan, with the theme “Bento Box Food.” Come hungry, because everything created is edible and all critters will be eaten.

Our DVD collection now has over 900 titles! Latest additions include:
“The Artist” (2011, PG13, Comedy/Romance/Drama) It’s finally here. Winner of last year’s Academy Award for Best Picture, and winner of five total Academy Awards. Silent movie star George Valentin bemoans the coming era of talking pictures and fades into oblivion and self-destruction, but finds sparks with Peppy Miller, a young dancer lighting up talkies like no one else.

SOLON– An incorrect Old Gold Dining July menu was inserted into the Solon Economist last week. A corrected menu appeared in the July issue of North Johnson County (NoJoCo). Additional corrected copies can be picked up at Old Gold Dining

Lady Spartans undefeated WaMaC champs

SOLON– It’s tough to argue Solon’s continued No. 1 ranking in Class 3A softball.
The Lady Spartans ended the regular season 32-6 over the weekend, finishing with a win over host Ottumwa at a tournament Friday.
Solon’s girls did pick up two losses last week, but they were to two of the best teams in the state.
Clear Creek Amana (No. 1 in Class 4A), perhaps the best team in any class, came to Solon last week and snatched victory away with a late surge, 11-4, while Cedar Rapids Jefferson (No. 4 in Class 5A) squeaked past Solon 3-2 in the first round of the Ottumwa tournament.

Spartans split with DeWitt, fall to Waterloo Columbus

SOLON– The Solon Spartans managed a split with Central DeWitt, but lost a doubleheader to Waterloo Columbus last week.
A doubleheader on the road at Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Friday night was cancelled due to severe weather.
The sole win of the week came in the opening game of the twin bill with DeWitt Monday, and all the scoring for the 6-4 win came in the first three innings.

Johnson County 4-H host 11th annual pancake breakfast July 9

IOWA CITY– 4-H members in Johnson County will be flipping pancakes, grilling sausage and serving up breakfast on Sunday, July 9, from 7 a.m. until noon at the 11th Annual 4-H pancake breakfast at the Johnson County 4-H fairgrounds, building C. Tickets are available at the door and pre-school age youth are free. Proceeds from the event will be used to support the 4-H program in Johnson County, which serves over 4,000 youth. 4-H members plan to uses funds to cover their program development fees to keep 4-H a low cost program for everyone involved.

Coralville Lake - summer programs

All campground programs are presented at the Sugar Bottom Campground Amphitheatre. Sugar Bottom Campground is located north of North Liberty on Mehaffey Bridge Road on the north side of the bridge.
All programs are free to the public and you do not have to be camping to attend a campground program. Feel free to bring your own blanket or lawn chair, but benches are provided.

City approves NL salaries for FY 2013

NORTH LIBERTY– As a new fiscal year begins, the City of North Liberty launches its 2012-2013 budget. The city council approved without discussion the salary schedule for the city’s 138 full-time and part-time employees.
The city now has 17 employees in its police department; 14 officers who are paid hourly, a chief and assistant chief who receive a monthly salary, and one hourly-paid administrative assistant. The North Liberty Fire Department remains mostly volunteer, with two part-time, salaried positions with the chief and assistant chief.
