‘Good ol’ boy’ Rick Dvorak retires as Johnson County Planning Director

IOWA CITY– If you want to get in touch with Rick Dvorak come May, you’ll need to hit the campgrounds, shooting range or golf course– a few of the places he feels most at home, aside from his office at the Johnson County Department of Planning, Development and Sustainability.
“I’m going to miss working but I got to go,” said Dvorak. “I better get out and enjoy life a little bit.”
Dvorak, who will turn 67 in June, is retiring as planning director at the end of the month. The decision is a result of some health issues he experienced last year.

NL Library, Pantry to partner on new seed bank

NORTH LIBERTY – The North Liberty Community Library and North Liberty Community Pantry are partnering to launch a community-wide seed library which will provide seeds, resources and educational opportunities needed to grow vegetables, herbs and flowers at home.
“Community partnerships are the foundation of a thriving community,” explained Elaine Hayes, Adult Services Librarian at the North Liberty Community Library. “The library has talked about having a seed library for some time and having the chance to partner with the pantry on the initiative is perfect,” said Hayes.

Area group holds Kites for Kids, the second child abuse prevention event in North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– When was the last time you flew a kite?
Hundreds of parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts took a leap down memory lane last Saturday, April 16, at the annual Kites for Kids event, teaching their little ones a popular pastime on the North Central Junior High football field in North Liberty.
The event, sponsored by Johnson County Community Partnerships for Protecting Children (CPPC), recognized April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month and urged parents to take an afternoon to intentionally spend time with their children.

Solon girls notch first win of the season at Western Dubuque

PEOSTA– The Solon Girls Golf team traveled to Thunder Hills Golf Club in Peosta on Monday, April 11. The conditions were not ideal for golf, but the girls toughed out their first win of the season. The Lady Spartans outlasted the Bobcats, 211­-215. Western Dubuque’s Quinn Herbst was the medalist, shooting a 44. Scoring for the Lady Spartans were:Dani Carter (49), Grace McCarty (51), Jenna Roskopf (55), and Reegan Helle (56).

Christensen, Ira, 4x800 relay collect first-place finishes

MARENGO– Iowa Valley High School hosted the Ruth Ahrens Boys Track Invitational on Tuesday, April 12, and the Spartans grabbed third in team scoring with a bit of a change in the cast.
The Spartans collected 10 team points apiece as Nate Christensen and Luke Ira took first place in the 200-meter dash and the 110-meter hurdles and Jake Schaeckenbach, Ben Krutzfeldt, Adam Smith and Graeson Dall took first in the 4x800-meter relay.
