Congratulations to Irene Jedlicka, who was the winner of our monthly drawing for adults. You could possibly be the $10 winner. Every month, the Friends of the Library sponsor a drawing for a $10 prize. All you have to do is read a book checked out from the Solon Public Library (or listen to an audiobook) then enter your name to win the prize. One name is picked at the end of each month.

RJ’Z Express reopens with new Godfather’s

SOLON– Randy Walter is happy to be back open.
The co-owner of the RJ’Z Express convenience store waited five months to reopen his new building, and now it’s here.
Walter and his partners John Himmelsbach and Tom Zumsande made the decision to tear down the existing building in order to expand its retail and food opportunities.
“Being locally owned, we wanted to serve the Solon community better,” Walter said.
The business closed at the end of November and the walls came down in December.

Bim Reyhons celebrated her 89th birthday with a supper at Odie’s in Ely on Monday evening, May 23. Those attending were Rachel Moody and Jenny Reyhons and Alivia of Cedar Rapids, Norma Kubichek of Sutliff, Gary and Nona Reyhons, Bill and Sue Reyhons, Ryan, Amy, May, Tyler, and Hudsyn Reyhons, and Amy, Grady and Carson Glick.

Mary’s Meals supporters host Solon 5K Saturday, June 25

SOLON– Local supporters of Mary’s Meals will be hosting a Be a Hunger Hero! 5K/1-mile run/walk Saturday, June 25, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Timber DOME Lodge at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area.
Participants are encouraged to dress as super heroes for extra fun. The event is family friendly, with strollers and dogs welcome.

Sarah Ferin selected as new head varsity volleyball coach for Solon

SOLON– The Solon Community School District announced Sarah Ferin as the next Head Varsity Volleyball Coach (pending board approval). Ferin recently served as the long time assistant at Xavier High School and brings a wealth of experience in the game.

Lady Spartans strike out against No. 1 Benton

Solon rolls over Greene County, Fort Madison

SOLON– It was a rematch of last year’s 3A championship game, and this time, Amber Fiser won.
The third-ranked Solon Lady Spartans were limited to three hits and Fiser rolled up 14 strike-outs as No. 1 Benton Community powered past third-ranked Solon, 4-0, in softball action June 8.
Junior McKenna Miller took the loss on the mound, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits while walking five batters and striking out three.

Vinton-Shellsburg hands Solon doubleheader loss on the road

SOLON– The Solon varsity baseball team swept a doubleheader against Center Point-Urbana (CP-U) June 8 at home.
Powered by three RBI from Tyler Linderbaum, the Spartans defeated CP-U 6-4 in the first game, and then scored 12 unanswered runs in the nightcap for a 13-7 win.
Junior Nick Hofsommer picked up the victory in game one, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out three and walking three. Sophomore Spencer Wegmann pitched three innings of relief, allowing two earned runs on two hits while striking out one.

Friends of St. Bridget’s invites community to engage online

SOLON– The volunteer-run, non-profit group Friends of St. Bridget’s is excited to invite the community to engage online. The non-profit has launched a brand new website, along with a new Facebook page and email list.
The historic St. Bridget’s Church, the Nolan Settlement, is located at 2136 St. Bridget’s Rd. NE in Solon, which is 13 miles northeast of Iowa City, nine miles north of West Branch, and nine miles east of Solon.

Outdoor Movie Night at Randall Park

Thursday, June 23

SOLON– Bring your lawn chairs or a blanket and join the Solon United Methodist Church at Randall Park the evening on June 23, for a showing of “*batteries not included.” The 1987 Steven Spielberg film stars Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy as owners and residents of a run-down apartment building and café in New York City’s East Village. They are befriended by extraterrestrial “flying saucers” who breathe new life into the struggle of the tenants in the building to save it from demolition. Film critic Roger Ebert described this movie as “sweet, cheerful, fun family entertainment.”

DNR proposes alcohol ban at Lake Macbride

Public hearing July 26 at Palisades-Kepler State Park

SOLON– If a proposed rule change goes into effect, alcohol will no longer be allowed at the Lake Macbride State Park beach.
But the process for approval is such that it may be October 2017 before the recommended changes take effect.
At a meeting Thursday, June 9, members of the Iowa Natural Resources Commission voted to approve a notice of intended action to amend the administrative rules governing state parks.
