Girls 3rd, boys 11th at Bob Brown invitational

Girls 3rd, boys 11th

IOWA CITY– The finishes were firm, even though the times were missing.
Electronic gremlins made individual times disappear from boys’ results at the Sept. 2 Bob Brown Invitational cross country meet in Iowa City. However, scores– derived by the order runners from each school crossed the finish line– did hold up.
For Solon, Carl Richey was the top runner, with the team finishing 11th.
The system did hold up for the girls. Freshman Kiersten Conway was the first Spartan across in the girls’ combined junior varsity (JV)/varsity 5-kilometer race. As a team, the girls finished third.

Lady Spartans make some noise against ranked opponents

Solon Economist
SOLON– The Lady Spartans swept Anamosa to win their home opener, but it may be what they did over the weekend that’s more impressive.
Solon’s varsity volleyball squad jumped out to a 4-1 start with wins over Liberty High, Williamsburg and Anamosa.
But Solon Head Coach Sarah Ferin was just as excited about going 1-3 at a weekend tournament at Cedar Rapids Washington.
“Don’t let that fool you, we hung with some big dogs,” Ferin said of the tournament.

Old Gold finds help next door

D.R. Miller steps into new role as diner’s site manager

By Nathan Countryman
Solon Economist
SOLON– D.R. Miller is proving you’re never too old to start a new career.
Miller was recently named the new manager for the Old Gold Diner in Solon, taking over for Duane McAtee, who retired at the end of July.
“One of the biggest challenges for me has been that I’ve been used to writing everything down in ink in my professional life,” Miller said. “This job requires you to write things down a lot more in pencil, to be willing to be flexible to whatever changes the day brings.”

SOLON– The window for shooting off fireworks displays in the City of Solon is going to close a bit.
At a Wednesday, Aug. 16, meeting, members of the Solon City Council informally approved language for an ordinance that would limit private fireworks to July 1 through July 4.
“The people that hate it are going to have to tolerate it for a week, not a month,” Mayor Steve Stange commented.
City Attorney Kevin Olson was directed to prepare an ordinance for future approval by council members.
