Akrum Wadley stays, Greg Davis goes

Hawk Talk

Last week, running back Akrum Wadley said he would be back for his senior season, while offensive coordinator Greg Davis decided to retire.
I tell some of my friends who asked me about Akrum staying or going, the statement head coach Kirk Ferentz made, “I don’t know any running backs in the NFL that weigh 185 pounds.”
Akrum has a chance to be one of the most exciting backs at Iowa since Tavian Banks. No disrespect to Shonn Greene but Shonn didn’t have the moves of Akrum. So if Akrum can keep his weight around 195, we’ll see if he can be a good NFL player.

Hawk men survive at home

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye women played one game last week, the men played two. The Iowa wrestlers were at Michigan on Friday and Michigan State on Sunday.

Hawkeye women

Just one day after the Hawkeyes lost in the Outback Bowl and struggled on offense, the Iowa women had the same problem at Penn State, losing 71-58 last week.
The Hawks only trailed 32-31 at half, shooting 50 percent from the floor and 29 percent from 3-point range.
In the third quarter, Iowa was 1-10 from the floor and 0-6 from behind the arc.

Meetings I’ve known

Walkin'

The worst meetings it was ever my misfortune to attend were run by a “light” colonel. As editor of the post’s newspaper I was expected to be in the room but was never sure why. I was in good company as there were another dozen in the same boat: we were ordered to attend. What I was sure of was that the colonel ran a meeting that was as long as it was worthless. Any topic could be picked apart including sports and soap operas. Nothing was ever decided even if it took all morning to get there.

Say cheese, please

Food For Thought

I never knew my paternal grandfather. He died young, of tuberculosis, before my parents married. He was a photographer by profession, in the small town of Mellen, Wisconsin, and he and my grandmother operated a grocery store there. Above the store was office space they rented to a dentist and, I presume, my grandfather’s photography studio. He had immigrated from Norway as a young man and built violins as a sideline and hobby.

More charges filed in murder-for-hire scheme
