SCSD to recognize retiring teachers May 15

SOLON– The Solon Community School District will be hosting a retirement open house for two long-time teachers Wednesday, May 15, from 4 until 6 p.m. at Lakeview in the media center.
First grade teacher Tama Hemann has been at Lakeview since 1974, and second grade teacher Diane Kopp has taught in Solon for 23 years.
Other retirees unable to attend include Chris Weber (Special Education Associate Lakeview), Karen Pregon (Reading Recovery and Title I reading Lakeview), Karen Clingerman (Media Associate at the High School).

Open house for Jean and Bob Stinocher May 15

SOLON– The Solon Senior Advocates will host an open house for Jean and Bob Stinocher to honor them as Solon seniors of the year. The event will be held at the Solon American Legion on Wednesday, May 15, from 3 until 5 p.m. Refreshments will be provided by American Legion groups, American Legion Auxiliary, Beef Days Committee and Senior Advocates.

Our Lord’s Church annual plant, bake sale May 18

SOLON– Our Lord’s Church will hold its annual plant, bake and garage sale at the church on Market Street Saturday, May 18, from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Old Gold Dining to move May 6 through May 10

SOLON– Old Gold Senior Dining will be served at the Family Life Center, Monday, May 6 through Friday, May 10 while the floor in the fellowship hall is being replaced. The sponsored meal scheduled for Wednesday, May 8, will be rescheduled to Wednesday, May 15. Call 319-624-2251 for information and reservations.

Saying so long to Hawkeye seniors

The Hawkeye women went to the NCAA basketball tournament for the sixth straight year, won 21 games and got a victory in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Iowa is the only Big Ten team to have appeared in the last six NCAA Tournaments.
I talked to assistant coach Jenni Fitzgerald last week about the season and the new recruits.
Coach Fitz has been on Lisa Bluder’s staff for 13 years and has helped the Hawkeyes to 12 postseason appearances, including 10 NCAA berths.

Robert Keating

Robert P. “Bob” Keating, 85, former chief of the Iowa City Fire Department, died peacefully at his home Friday, April 26, 2013, surrounded by his family under the compassionate care of Iowa City Hospice.
Funeral services were held April 30 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established to support a number of causes important to Bob and his family. Online condolences may be sent for his family through the web at www.gayandciha.com.

Dolores Mary McGillin

Dolores Mary McGillin, 87, of North Liberty and a longtime Cosgrove resident, died peacefully Friday, May 3, 2013 at Lantern Park Care Center.
Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, May 6, at St. Peter’s Church in Cosgrove with Father Edmond Dunn officiating. Burial was at St. Peter’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
Dolores was born May 9, 1925, on the family farm in Johnson County, the daughter of John and Blanche Miller Rourke. She was a graduate of Oxford High School. On Sept. 11, 1945, Dolores married Thomas McGillin at St. Mary’s Church in Oxford.

Edward Swenka

Edward R. Swenka, 94, Cedar Rapids, formerly of Oxford, died Saturday morning, April 27, 2013, at the Solon Nursing Care Center. Funeral Mass was held May 1 at Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Father Christopher Podhajsky. Burial was in Saint John’s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Marguerite Wagner

Marguerite A. Wagner, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center. Funeral Mass was held May 4 at All Saints Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, with Father John R. Flaherty presiding. Burial was in Czech National Cemetery.
