Creek Girls bit by Stormin’ Pointers, 3-0

CENTER POINT–— Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity girls fell, 3-0 (25-18, 25-17 and 25-12), to the Stormin’ Pointers of Center Point-Urbana Tuesday, Sept. 19, in Center Point.

Women of Troy third at Rim Rock Farm XC Classic

LAWRENCE, Kan.– Iowa City West High’s Women of Troy ran in the University of Kansas’ Rim Rock Farm High School Cross Country Classic Saturday, Sept. 23, and finished third in the Girls-Gold Varsity Division. St. James Academy won the division with 144 points followed by Millard West (149) and West High (158).
Bailey Nock was third in 18:49.30, one second behind the runner-up, Makenzie Stucker of Raymore-Peculiar High School, and a little more than 30 seconds behind winner Victoria Findley from Blue Springs South High School (Kan.).

Lynn takes over Women of Troy softball, again

IOWA CITY– A familiar face returns to the Iowa City West High softball diamond next summer as Barb Lynn has been hired as the head coach for the West High Women of Troy varsity softball program.
Athletic Director Craig Huegel recommended Lynn for the position on Sept. 5 and she was approved by the Iowa City Community School District’s Board of Education on Tuesday, Sept. 12. She replaces Justin Lutjen, who resigned at the conclusion of the 2017 season.

Clippers and Bolts run in Solon

SOLON–— Clear Creek Amana (CCA) and Liberty High cross country teams ran in Solon’s Invitational meet Monday, Sept. 18, at the Solon Recreation Nature Area. The CCA varsity boys were the runner- up in team points with 80, behind team champion Mount Vernon-Lisbon with 63 points. The Liberty Lightning were ninth with 209 points finishing ahead of 10th place Solon (251 points).

Trojans and Bolts tangle with Tigers on the links

CEDAR FALLS–— Iowa City West High and Liberty High golfers competed in Cedar Falls High School’s Tiger Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at the Beaver Hills Golf Course, where Linn-Mar edged Cedar Falls on a fifth-score tiebreaker for the team championship. The Lions won with 317, while the Tigers were second (317) and Cedar Rapids Xavier finished third (321).

West runs away from CR Prairie

Trojans top Prairie Hawks, 48-28

IOWA CITY– It was a happy Homecoming for Iowa City West High as the Trojans rolled over the Prairie Hawks from Cedar Rapids Prairie, 48-28, Friday, Sept. 22.
Both teams were 4-0 coming into the contest, which tied twice in the first half.
Traevis Buchanan took an Evan Flitz pass to the end zone with 6:43 left in the first quarter to give the Trojans a 6-0 lead, which was boosted by a successful point-after kick from Lucas Karwal.

New school board members sworn in at CCA

OXFORD– The voice of the voters in the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District was heard Wednesday, Sept. 20, as two board members departed and one continued for another term, but also took on a new role.
District 4 representative Jim Seelman retired with the expiration of his term, leading to the election of Nikki Knapp, who ran unopposed on the ballot. At-Large director Eileen Schmidt lost her reelection bid to Kathy Swenka while District 2 representative Bob Broghammer retained his seat by defeating challenger Scott Rohret.

Charting a new course for young leaders

TIFFIN— A legitimate function of schools is to develop productive members of society, which means instilling leadership qualities, not only to develop leaders now but in the future, as well. Clear Creek Amana (CCA) has sponsored a leadership program since 2015, but expanded it with their first LeaderSHIP Summit Wednesday, Sept. 13, at the high school. Nearly 200 students from CCA and surrounding school districts listened to five speakers mingle life lessons with goal setting and the principles of leadership.

New location for La Montessori Nurtury

NORTH LIBERTY– La Montessori Nurtury is making big changes in the Corridor with its recent move to a new location at 575 North Kansas Ave.
As one of the only Montessori schools in the Corridor, La Montessori Nurtury offers a unique care and educational program for the parents and children it serves. Open since 2013, the new location helps La Montessori reach bigger and better goals.

Fall leaf collection starts Oct. 9

NORTH LIBERTY– City crews will collect leaves curbside beginning the week of Oct. 9. This free service will run through the week of Nov. 13.
To have your leaves collected, rake them within 2 feet of the street by 7 a.m. on each Monday. Crews will collect them by Friday. Don’t bag your leaves or mix them with sticks, branches or other yard waste, or any other materials.
To speed collection, please avoid placing piles near street signs or utility poles, and avoid parking in front of leaf piles.
