Notch two wins for Solon boys soccer

SOLON– Solon’s varsity boys moved to 9-3 on the soccer season with a home win over West Delaware and a road victory against Anamosa last week.
Senior Ben Carr, junior Isaac Vang and sophomore Luke Yetley all scored for the Spartans in a 3-0 win April 20 hosting West Delaware. Carr also had two assists. Keeper Eric Weetman recorded a shutout with help from the Solon defense, which kept the Hawks out of striking range most of the match.

Solon girls soccer

SOLON– The Lady Spartan varsity soccer team scored 18 combined goals against West Delaware and Anamosa last week.
On the road in Manchester April 17, Solon roughed up the Hawks, 11-0, led by senior Josie Durr with eight goals. Sophomore Taylor Ryan added three goals and four assists. Taylor Noonan also had an assist.
Keeper Brianna Smith recorded one save in the shutout.
At home against Anamosa April 21, it was six goals for Durr and one for senior Tara Lance in a 7-0 win. Junior Megan Tucker aided with two assists. Smith had three saves in goal.

7th grade girls second, 8th grade sixth

SOLON– The future was so bright, the Solon High School track coaches almost had to be wearing shades as the Solon Middle School girls competed under sunny skies, at home on April 11, in the opening meet of their track season. The eighth grade girls finished sixth with 55 team points, behind Mid-Prairie (119), Clear Creek Amana (106.5), Williamsburg (94), Anamosa (76), and Benton (61), but bested Regina (44.5). The seventh grade girls were runners-up to Mid Prairie (130) but spent much of the meet knocking on the door before finishing with 119 team points.

Old Gold Diner - May activities

• April was another good month at The Old Gold Diner. We enjoyed what we learned about bees and beekeeping from Ron Puettmann. Bees are amazing creatures and the beekeepers are doing us all a favor by helping the population of bees grow.

• A big thank you to the George and Gladys Chaloupka family for sponsoring the April meal. What a wonderful way to remember them, friends and family that came enjoyed that time together.

Solon golfers hanging tough

Spartans 1st or 2nd in tournament action

SOLON– The Spartan varsity golfers are tearing up the links this season.
Solon won its home invitational April 7 and has placed second in tournaments at Central DeWitt April 18 and West Delaware April 22.

Solon boys fourth at Denny Gruber Relays

Spartans begin late season climb

By Jeff Hess

SOLON– Great things have happened at Solon Stadium. The community has come together, military services have been honored, fallen comrades remembered and records have been set. Tuesday, April 18, was no different as the lights of the stadium shown brightly on the athletes competing in the Denny Gruber Relays.
This year’s Denny Gruber Relays supported tradition in a big way as the girls’ track team captured first place and the boys’ track and field team captured fourth in a field of stout competition.

On to Drake for Solon girls

SOLON– Was it the shoes?
Solon sophomore Abby Smith was doing okay early this season in the high jump, clearing 4-10, 5 foot once, and picking up a couple points in the event for her team.
Add a new pair of jumping shoes, though, and she’s scaling new heights.
At Solon’s April 18 Denny Gruber Coed Relays track meet, she laced up her new footwear and cleared 5-4.
That was good for third place at the meet named for her grandfather, a former head track coach at Solon, who still volunteers as the school’s– and Abby’s– jumps coach.
