Takes family to open Ely creamery

Dan and Debbie’s Creamery will sell milk and ice cream, opening July 30

ELY– The opening-soon Dan and Debbie’s Creamery in Ely will sell white and chocolate milk, squeaky cheese curds and homemade ice cream. But it will also sell some things that are non-quantifiable: the security of knowing your milk comes from happy, well-treated cows, the satisfaction of finding a tasty and high-quality product by a local business, and the knowledge that your dollar supports a business built and maintained by an entire family.

Goodbye Bob

Legendary Iowa broadcaster Bob Brooks passed away last weekend.
I had the privilege of meeting and getting to know Bob a little bit when I started covering the Hawkeyes for the North Liberty Leader in 2001.
The thing that made Bob so special was that he treated everyone the same.
Whether you were a high-profile coach, like Hayden Fry, or a weekly sports writer like me.
He also had time to talk and I loved to talk to him about those great Hawkeye football teams in the ‘50s.

Three returning seniors: Ally, Alexa and Hailey

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye women have three seniors to lead the team next season, hopefully back to the NCAA tournament.
All three have different leadership qualities and are important in the chemistry of the team.
To start with, Ally Disterhoft was voted second team All-Big Ten last year and started in 84 of 103 games.
Alexa Kastanek played in 99 games, with 20 starts, and led the Hawkeyes with 56 3-pointers last season.

Mother, may I go out to swim?

Food For Thought

Yes, my darling daughter, hang your clothes on a hickory limb, but don’t go near the water.
My aunt Opal would recite that verse and laugh as if it were the funniest joke she’d ever heard. I couldn’t see anything funny about it. I loved to swim and thought it tragic anyone would go out to swim but never even get wet.

Fall on the sword GOP

Not so much

It’s been morbidly fascinating to watch.
First, full disclosure: I’m a registered Democrat and I skew to the socialist side. I have my gray areas, but I’m mostly shading toward the line in left field.

Priceless fishing trip

Walkin'

A bonus chance to going fishing with Dad popped up last week, and I grabbed it.
Both brother Bob and I were pleasantly surprised to hear the old man was thinking of picking up his rod and reel again. A couple years ago, a bad case of gout flared up in his hands, making it almost too painful to put on his own clothes much less reel in a Bluegill.
But the gout eventually subsided and Dad let it be known he’d like nothing better than to get out on Bob’s new Lund fishing boat on Father’s Day.
Have I mentioned the boat?

Women of Troy tame the Tigers

IC West wins 12-2 and 12-2 over Cedar Falls

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy improved to 19-5 overall and 15-1 in the Mississippi Valley Conference’s Valley Division following their softball doubleheader sweep Tuesday, June 21, over the Cedar Falls Tigers. West High took both games, 12-2, in five innings each.
Jessie Harder kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the third inning of game one with a two-run double, followed by Skylar Ryan with a two-run single and Darby Donovan knocking an RBI double.
The Tigers answered with a home run off Harder in the top of the fourth, which was good for two runs.
