CR Washington Warriors snap Women of Troy’s winning streak

Cedar Rapids 60, Iowa City 51

CEDAR RAPIDS– The West High Women of Troy’s perfect record ended at six wins Friday, Dec. 18, on the Cedar Rapids Washington Warrior’s basketball court as Wash took a Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) varsity contest, 60-51. West held a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter but were down one point at halftime. West trailed 35-33 going into the final period where the Warriors unleashed a 25-point attack for the win.
Maddie Huinker led West with 11 points followed by Logan Cook with 10.
The loss dropped the Women of Troy to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in MVC play.

Sedlacek named to CoSIDA Academic All-America team

PLATTEVILLE, Wis.— Caleb Sedlacek, a senior mechanical engineering major and member of the men’s soccer team at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America Division III Men’s Academic All-America team, an honor only about 30 other student-athletes in the entire country possess. 
“This is a huge honor for me,” said Sedlacek. “I am just glad all my work on and off the field really paid off.”

IOWA CITY– The West High bowling Trojans and Women of Troy fell Friday, Dec. 18, at home as the Mustangs of Dubuque Hempstead galloped away with victories on the bowling lanes.

WATERLOO– West High’s wrestlers competed in the 2015 Battle of Waterloo at Young Arena Friday and Saturday, Dec. 18-19.
The Trojans were third in team points in “Pool 4” against Charles City, Independence and Alburnett; and placed fourth in “Bracket A” competition, which featured Lisbon (bracket champions), Western Dubuque, Waverly-Shell Rock, Mason City, LaPorte City-Union, Cedar Falls and Waterloo Columbus Catholic.

Nelson celebrates 15 years volunteering at North Liberty Community Pantry

NORTH LIBERTY– Jacqueline Nelson saw a lot of changes in the 15 years she has been a volunteer at the North Liberty Community Pantry. The First United Methodist Church was located in a different part of town and handed out only a few sacks of food to local families. Fast-forward 15 years, the pantry is located on Jones Boulevard, on the same campus as the church, built new in 2013.

NORTH LIBERTY– A community service project by Lowe’s Home Improvement will help the North Liberty Community Pantry make the most of its community garden harvests.
As part of the company’s nationwide “Lowe’s Heroes” program, volunteers from the Coralville store installed cabinets, new countertops and added space at the pantry for a new dishwasher donated by Lowe’s.
The North Liberty Community Pantry planted a 9,600 square-foot teaching garden in spring 2015 to provide fresh produce and educational nutrition programs for its clients and the community. 

Swisher all-you-can-eat breakfast Jan. 11

SWISHER– The Swisher American Legion Auxiliary is sponsoring an all-you-can-eat breakfast Sunday, Jan. 24, from 8:30-11 a.m. The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children, although kids age 5 and under eat free. The public is invited to join the Auxiliary for breakfast at the Swisher American Legion.

Clear Creek Amana anticipates continued enrollment growth

OXFORD— Taxpayers in the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) School District might see another bond referendum within the next few years. Voters approved a $48 million bond issue in February 2014 for the new Tiffin Elementary and an expansion of the middle school and high school, all in response to enrollment growth. Tiffin Elementary opened this fall, work is nearing completion at the middle school and bids will be let soon for the high school project.

The North Liberty branch of the Lions Club recognized 13 area children who participated in the international organization’s Peace Poster contest at the local club’s meeting Dec. 10, at the North Liberty Community Library.

Shop With A Cop event brightens holidays for local families

CORALVILLE— Christmas was a little brighter this year for six North Liberty families, thanks to the efforts of the North Liberty Police Department (NLPD) and its first-ever “Shop With A Cop” event. Six kids were paired with police officers on Tuesday, Dec. 15 at the Wal-Mart in Coralville. Together, they patrolled the aisles in search of gifts for the kids’ families.
