Gallery West decision “hopefully”

Council sets Dec. 13 work session for in-depth discussion

SOLON– The Solon City Council is expected to make a decision regarding Gallery Acres West’s request for water service at a Dec. 20 regular meeting.
Council members and Mayor Steve Stange discussed the issue briefly at a Dec. 6 meeting before setting a Dec. 13 work session for in-depth deliberation.
At the beginning of November, Stange asked council members to decide on the Gallery Acres West (GAW) extension by the end of December.
The topic appeared on the Dec. 6 agenda for discussion and possible action, but Stange quickly extinguished the hope of a decision.

Iowa wrestlers

Hawk Talk

For the second meet in a row, the Hawks lost the first three matches and trailed 12-0. But they came back to beat 16th-ranked Rutgers, 25-13, last Friday.
For the second week in a row, heavyweight Sam Stoll ended the match with a pin to give Iowa the win.
“We’re going to be in the funny farm if we have to keep digging ourselves out of holes,” said head coach Tom Brands. “We know we have good guys at every weight. It’s not even about winning. It’s about wrestling the entire match. Nothing in life works if you wrestle only part of it.”

Hawkeye men play two

Hawk Talk

The Iowa men didn’t fare as well against the Cyclones in their trip to Ames last Thursday, losing 84-78.
A couple of stats that jump off the page in the loss include turnovers and free throws.
The Hawks turned the ball over 18 times, and Iowa State scored 28 points off turnovers.
The second was Iowa going 1-8 (12.5 percent) from the free throw line, and 0-5 in the first half.
The ‘Clones came through shooting 15-20 (75 percent) from the charity stripe.
It’s called the charity stripe because you get to shoot with nobody covering you.

Cy-Hawk week

Hawk Talk

Last week, the Hawkeye women traveled to Ames on Wednesday to play the Cyclones, the men went to Cyclone country on Thursday.
The last time the Iowa Hawkeye women beat the ‘Clones in Ames was 1989.
I was 35 years old and the Iowa football team was coming off a 5-6 record, 3-5 in the Big Ten.
I remember the last game at Kinnick Stadium, which was a 43-7 knockdown by Minnesota. The fans were booing at the end of the game with Matt Rodgers at quarterback.
It wasn’t pretty.
Of course, the team would bounce back in 1990, win the Big Ten and go to the Rose Bowl

Hiding places

If you have children young enough to be curious about what Santa is going to bring– and that doesn’t necessarily stop when they stop believing in the old elf– you probably have devised some pretty good hiding places over the years. Kids can be pretty sneaky and, even if you never leave them alone in the house, they’re fairly adept at snooping around when you’re busy cooking supper or in the shower.
