Running into winter

City staffer closes in on 1,000 miles to raise funds for Girls on the Run

NORTH LIBERTY– You won’t often find Nick Bergus jogging around the indoor track at the North Liberty Recreation Center.
“I don’t like running inside,” he said. “It’s definitely not my favorite.”
Despite his office in the North Liberty Communications Department being located virtually underneath the track, Bergus said he prefers outdoor runs– even in the winter.
“I’ve got my whole chart for outside temperature and what I need to actually wear,” he said. “This time of year I’m in the baklava and I’m wearing two layers on my legs and two or three layers on top.”

The Downtown Dachsund: From beach bucket to boutique

Melissa and Tom Reed follow entreprenurial spirit to Dows Street

ELY– “Why isn’t there a collapsible beach pail?”
Three and a half years ago, Melissa and Tom Reed’s first entrepreneurial project began with that simple question. Upon arriving at Myrtle Beach while on vacation, their son Landon looked around and said, “I want a bucket.” With no buckets to be found at the beach, they had to pack up and go into town to buy one.
When it came time to go home, Landon was very disappointed his new bucket had to be left behind.
“It created so many memories, he wanted to take it with us,” Melissa recalled.

Corps: Stay away from unstable ice on Coralville Reservoir

CORALVILLE– The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is warning individuals to be careful on all frozen lakes. With the colder temperatures, ice has begun to form on the Coralville Lake and the Corps is currently lowering the lake level to its winter elevation. The combination of ice formation and lowering of the lake levels will create unstable and dangerous conditions. Ice that is not supported by lake water is at risk of cracking, breaking or giving away at any time. As the ice shelf begins to drop, it can cause a dangerous slope along the shoreline, making it hard to get back off the ice.
