SOLON– It is a massive contribution.
An estimated $6 million addition to Solon High School will be built by the Gerdin Family Foundation.

Jury duty scam making rounds

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office has taken reports from the public that they have received calls and or messages from a person identifying themselves as a deputy at the sheriff’s office. The recipient is informed that they have missed jury duty or they have a warrant out for their arrest. They are given the option of either paying a bond/fine or turning themselves in to the jail.

A day in the life

Walkin'

Mom and Dad said they “shopped at Jewel’ last week.
Some readers will recognize Jewel as Jewel-Osco, a supermarket chain originating in Chicago that spread to the upper half of Illinois and corners of Iowa and Indiana.

Love and marriage

We got engaged on Valentine’s Day, 1956. I don’t think either one of us planned or even thought about it being a romantic time for the proposal and acceptance. In fact, I don’t recall any mention of it being Valentine’s Day or any of the usual accouterments, such as flowers or a box of chocolates. It just happened to be Feb. 14, and the whole thing was coincidence. I guess, when you’re young and giddy with daydreams and hormones, any day will do.
Well, that was 61 years ago, and we were married for almost 50 years before my husband died.

Kuhl, Phillips and Jans, Inc.

Proudly serving the Corridor for 25 years and counting

CORALVILLE– Not many of us look forward to visiting our accountant at tax time.
As owners Jesse Jans and John Phillips of Kuhl, Phillips and Jans, Inc. watched their business grow, they realized their waiting room wasn’t keeping up.
“You could fit five people in there,” Jans noted.
With no tax code changes expected during the lame duck session of Congress, 2016 ended up being a good year to go hunting for new digs.

Senior Day win for the Iowa wrestlers

Hawk Talk

The Iowa wrestlers opened the weekend Friday night at Indiana crushing the Hoosiers, 33-7.
That was Iowa’s 22nd straight road dual win.
Senior day was on Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena and the Hawks handled the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 27-9.
Thomas Gilman (125 pounds) and Michael Kemerer (157) both had pins for the Hawks against the Hoosiers, but first I have to talk about Gilman’s pin the week before against Minnesota.
