Mehaffey Bridge public meeting to be held April 15 at South Slope

NORTH LIBERTY– The Johnson County Secondary Roads Department will be holding a public information meeting on the Mehaffey Bridge Replacement Project Monday, April 15, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the South Slope Community Center located at 980 N. Front St. in North Liberty.

Council agrees to rezone, but resists intended use

NORTH LIBERTY– Developers hoping to build a Family Video store in of North Liberty might need to re-write their script, based on council’s recent dialogue.
At its March 26 meeting, the North Liberty City Council approved the first consideration of a rezoning request in an area known as Community Addition, next to the University of Iowa Community Credit Union (UICCU) on Highway 965.

Tiffin council approves 5-year TIF incentive

TIFFIN– The City of Tiffin is preparing to give a fairly significant tax break to a local business in town.
At the Tiffin City Council’s Feb. 13 meeting, Big Country Seeds owner Dan Steines approached the council with a request for a five-year tax abatement for a planned expansion of his business.

We Run celebrates first year with 5K

NORTH LIBERTY– What better way for a store specializing in running shoes and apparel to celebrate its one-year anniversary than with a 5K run? That’s how Kris and Brian Tharp, owners of We Run, chose to mark their big day.
At least 650 people registered for either a 5K run or 1 mile walk held on Saturday, March 23, just two days shy of the anniversary. The event also served as a fundraiser for the First United Methodist Church of North Liberty’s youth group. The group is headed on a mission trip to Puerto Rico later this year.


Spartans 3-0 to start season

SOLON– The Spartans have started the season on the right foot.
Solon’s varsity boys have opened the season 3-0, including a home win against the No. 1 ranked team in 1A, Waterloo Columbus.
According to head coach Jeremy McMurrin, the Spartans have moved up a class this season and are ranked No. 14 in Class 2A.
After a scoreless scrimmage against Cedar Rapids Xavier at the Cedar Rapids Washington Soccer Jamboree, the Spartans opened the season at home with a 2-1 win over No. 9 Iowa Mennonite April 1. Nick Brown and Brandan Childs scored goals for Solon, with an assist to Chase Gross.


Boys take fourth at first outdoor meet

TIPTON– The 2013 edition of the Solon boys track team finally got to run its first meet of the season outdoors last week, having two meets cancelled the previous week do to inclement weather.
The boys finished fourth out of 11 teams competing at the Tipton Invitational.
Scores were as follows:
1. CPU 115
2. Monticello 108.5
3. Camanche 70
4. Solon 65
5. West Liberty 40
6. Mount Vernon 35
7. Tipton 19
8. Springville 18
9. West Branch 17
10. Benton 16
11. Wilton 12


Lady Spartans finish fourth at J-Hawk Relays

CEDAR RAPIDS– A tale of two teams… almost.
Solon’s Lady Spartans showed they can run with the big schools, when healthy. They finished fourth in the J-Hawk Relays Saturday in Cedar Rapids, even leading for a while, early on.


Girls give Coach Tucker his 100th win

Solon defeats Marion in 2-1 overtime shoot-out Friday

SOLON– The Solon Lady Spartans celebrated their inaugural game at Spartan Field with a 2-1 overtime shoot-out against Marion Friday, giving coach John Tucker his 100th career victory.
Anna Seydel hit the winning goal to give Solon a winning start to the season.
Alison McKinnie had the team’s lone goal in regulation, tying the score at 7:45 in the second half on an assist from Abby Haas.
Marion’s goal came on a penalty kick at 17:07 in the first half after an inadvertent hand ball in the box.
Coach Tucker was happy with the results.

Lakeview PTO’s second annual Spartan Dash fundraiser set for Saturday, April 27

SOLON– The Lakeview PTO will be hosting its second annual Spartan Dash on Saturday, April 27, rain or shine. The Spartan Dash is a fun and crazy fitness event that will serve as Lakeview PTO’s largest fundraiser of the year. Interested individuals should sign up to participate in the event with a family team. Family teams will walk, skip, or run through obstacles set up along the one-mile trail in the Solon Recreation and Nature Area. Obstacles will be suitable for both children and adults and are guaranteed to have you laughing.
