Solon School News

E-Registration
for school year

Solon Community Schools will once again be using an e-registration process accessible through PowerSchool. This process will use the same login information parents of middle school and high school students use to check grades via PowerSchool.  This is also the same login information all parents used for e-registration in previous years.

New nonfiction books

“The Sport Gene” by David Epstein. The debate is as old as physical competition. Are stars like Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps and Serena Williams genetic freaks put on Earth to dominate their respective sports? Or are they simply normal people who overcame their biological limits through sheer force of will and obsessive training? In this controversial and engaging exploration of athletic success and the so-called 10,000-hour rule, David Epstein tackles the great nature vs. nurture debate and traces how far science has come in solving it.

SOLON– The Solon Community School District (SCSD) is considering a slightly more restrictive open enrollment policy.
At a July 14 meeting, Superintendent Sam Miller provided the SCSD Board of Directors with a proposal to revise the caps currently in place for inbound open enrollment at Lakeview Elementary.
Back in April 2013, the school board approved a policy for kindergarten through fourth grades at Lakeview that cut off open enrollment when the number of students in each grade reached a level five seats below capacity.

Members of the public will be given the opportunity to ask questions and express their views orally and in writing.

Tiny bubbles

Ben Jimenez of Ben’s Bubble Show blows bubbles inside of a bubble during his presentation at the Solon Public Library June 24. Ben’s Bubble Show was one of the Family Night programs offered over the summer at the library. Using his hands and some simple tools, Jimenez created a myriad of bubble formations to the delight of children in the audience. (photo by Doug Lindner)

2014 Hawkeye Football Schedule Part Two

Hawk Talk

This is the second part of a two-part story of the Iowa Hawkeye football schedule.
Last week, I thought Iowa could be favored in its first six games.
That includes home games with the University of Northern Iowa (UNI), Ball State, Iowa State, and Indiana (homecoming) plus road trips to Pittsburgh and Purdue.
The second half of the season starts with a first-time trip to Maryland, at home with Northwestern, and road games at Minnesota and Illinois.
The Hawks finish at home with Wisconsin and Nebraska.
