Four conference dual victories

Spartans take down Western Dubuque

TIFFIN– The Spartan varsity wrestling squad moved its dual meet record to 17-5 on the season with a pair of conference sweeps.
Solon traveled to Tiffin Monday, Jan. 21, for a rescheduled double dual with Clear Creek Amana (CCA) and Center Point-Urbana. The Spartans overcame an early Clipper lead for a 46-24 win, then blew past the Stormin’ Pointers, 54-21.
Thursday, Jan. 18, Solon headed up to Epworth for a double dual with Western Dubuque and Central DeWitt. The Spartans overwhelmed the Sabers, 47-24, and scored a solid victory over the Bobcats, 40-24.

Solon wrestlers 2nd at Herb Irgens

Linderbaum 1st, Hoyle, Wegmann 2nd

IDA GROVE– With a champion and two runners-up, Solon’s varsity wrestlers claimed second place in the 25-team Herb Irgens Invitational in Ida Grove Jan. 20-21.
Gilbertville-Don Bosco (ranked No. 1 in Class 1A) won the team title with 251.5 points, followed by Solon with 182.5. Sergeant Bluff-Luton (141.5) and Woodbury Central (137) were neck-and-neck for third and fourth place.
“I really thought our guys wrestled well in the two-day tournament,” Solon Head Coach Blake Williams noted. “We were a solid second ahead of many good teams from Western Iowa.”

Spartans fall short

Coons’ 33 points not enough in OT 63-61 loss

SOLON– The just don’t get much closer than that.
Tied at 57 after a see-saw battle through the first four quarters, Western Dubuque used a 6-4 advantage in overtime to defeat Solon’s varsity boys, 63-61, at home Jan. 19.
The loss dropped the Spartans to 9-5 on the season.
In each of three losses in 2018, Solon has scored 61 points. The last two, on the road at Mount Vernon Jan. 12 and home Friday against Western Dubuque, were 63-61 margins.
The Spartans and the Bobcats were neck-and-neck throughout the game, with the lead never moving past four points in the first half.

Small towns need transit

Corridor public transportation systems need connectivity

NORTH LIBERTY– Residents of North Liberty and rural Johnson County inhabit areas that transportation planners sometimes refer to as “transit deserts,” locales where substantial numbers of people without cars rely on public transit services that stop short of providing access to the outermost pick-up and drop-off points of larger metropolitan bus and passenger rail systems. It’s an issue that has caught the attention of state-level representatives of Corridor communities.

City, SCSD, fire dept. to share fuel depot

3,000 gallon diesel tank installed at public works

SOLON– It should be a win-win all the way around.
The Solon Community School District (SCSD), the City of Solon and the Solon Tri-Township Fire Department have entered into an agreement for the joint operation of a diesel fuel depot outside the city’s public works facility.
The 3,000-gallon tank was installed and is expected to be operational in February.
The idea originated with the school district last year.

Wrestlers lose to 2nd-ranked Ohio State

Hawk Talk

I didn’t think Iowa had much of a chance against the Buckeyes until Spencer Lee got the Hawks going with a big upset at 125 pounds.
Nathan Tomasello was ranked first in the nation coming into the meet, but Spencer did a great job of riding Nathan out the whole second period, getting an escape in the third and with riding time won, 3-2.
What a huge win.
What a fun wrestler to watch.
Iowa won only three more matches as the Buckeyes won the meet, 22-12.
