Linn-Mar defeats Iowa City West, 40-26, in wrestling opener

MARION– The Iowa City West High wrestlers opened the 2016-17 season with a loss Thursday, Dec. 1, on the road in Marion at Linn-Mar High School as they took on the Lions in a duel meet. The Trojan junior varsity fell, 55-12, as Nate Daniels (285 pounds) pinned Linn-Mar’s Zach Hart in 1:39 and Mason Sorge (152) pinned the Lions’ Jared Zieser in 1:31.

CCA falls 66-34 against Western Dubuque

A rough start for the Creek boys

TIFFIN– Call it the Clippers’ shakedown cruise. The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys took to the hardwood Tuesday, Nov. 29, at home to face the Bobcats of Western Dubuque in the 2016-17 season opener. It also marked the debut of new head coach Brandon Clubb. Turnovers, inexperience and losing the rebound battle torpedoed the Creek Boys, leading to a 66-34 loss.

Lightning strikes as Liberty boys zap City High Red, 42-39

NORTH LIBERTY– Yet another list of “firsts” for Liberty High School were recorded Wednesday, Nov. 30, at North Central Jr. High in North Liberty. The school, still under construction and not opening until next fall, has fielded freshmen volleyball and football teams under the “Lady Lightning” and “Original (“O”) Bolts” monikers. The players attend Iowa City West High currently, but will transfer to Liberty, and presumably continue to play for Liberty throughout the remainder of their high school careers.

Blue Hearts Breakfast with Santa Dec. 10

NORTH LIBERTY– Blue Hearts of Johnson County will host a Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 10, at Hills Bank and Trust’s Forevergreen Road location, in North Liberty, from 9-11 a.m.
One hundred percent of the proceeds from the event will benefit police officers in need. Have your child’s photo taken with Santa or have them meet McGruff the Crime Dog. Balloon animals, arts and crafts and K9 Barry of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office will also be part of the fundraiser, as will an appearance by University of Iowa mascot Herky.

Gingerbread house contest Dec. 1-19 at the library

NORTH LIBERTY– Gingerbread, frosting, licorice and red hots, oh my! Create a gingerbread house for the North Liberty Community Library’s annual Gingerbread House Contest, submissions will be accepted Dec. 1-19.
The only rule for the contest is to have fun. Give your house a fun or festive name and bring it to display at the library by Dec. 19. You can also email a photo of your house to mharrison@northlibertyiowa.org. Images must be clear and close up.

Pancakes and Pajamas at South Slope Dec. 10

NORTH LIBERTY– Organizers behind the Iowa City Moms Blog invite area kids and parents to a morning of holiday fun in their pajamas at the South Slope Community Center on Saturday, Dec. 10, from 9-11 a.m.
Pancakes and other breakfast items will be served, and sponsors will be on hand with lots of holiday-themed games, activities and crafts. There will also be a fun holiday backdrop for photos.

Daddy-Daughter Dance Dec. 10 at NLRC

NORTH LIBERTY– Attend the first annual daddy-daughter dance for the corridor area Saturday, Dec. 10, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the North Liberty Recreation Center.
Wedding videographer Diamond Label Films is sponsoring this event, which will include food, games and door prizes. There is a $10 donation collected at the door, which will be donated to the Dream Center of Iowa City, whose focus is bettering the father/child relationship.
Uncles, brothers, grandfathers, etc. are welcome.

Hawks, ex-Hawks read at Van Allen

NORTH LIBERTY– Students in Cindy Flack’s third-grade classroom at Van Allen Elementary pose for a photo with current and former University of Iowa basketball players. The Hawks and ex-Hawks stopped by Van Allen on Wednesday, Nov. 30, to read to Flack’s third-graders, answer questions and went to play basketball with the students.

North Liberty Transit schedule adjustment effective Dec. 1
NORTH LIBERTY– Beginning Dec. 1, the North Liberty Transit’s midday fixed-route bus service adjusted its schedule, starting five minutes earlier.
The schedule will allow a 5-minute layover at the North Liberty Community Center at 12:25 p.m. The schedule will remain the same after this layover. The updated schedule is below.

All for the little ones’ Christmas joys
