NORTH LIBERTY– Last spring, residents of North Liberty received a postcard inviting them to respond to an online community survey.
Mailed to 9,090 North Liberty addresses, the postcard was in English, Spanish, French and Mandarin. In total, 387 responses were gathered.

Tiffin Good Neighbor meeting Jan. 30

The City of Tiffin may soon consider a rezoning and subdivision plat and to invite the public to an open-house style meeting being held to explain the proposal.

Hypnotist comedy show coming to Tiffin Jan. 25

TIFFIN– The Fine Arts and Music Enhancers (F.A.M.E.) will be hosting Clear Creek Amana (CCA) alumnus Steve Meade as he performs his comedy hypnosis show “The Virtual Reality Tour” Thursday, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m. at the Clear Creek Amana High School Performing Arts Center in Tiffin. Volunteers from the audience will be taken on a spellbound lifelike mental vacation using the power of hypnosis.

Swisher American Legion Chili Cook-Off Feb. 4

SWISHER– The Swisher American Legion will host its annual Chili Cook-Off Sunday, Feb. 4, at the Legion. Bring one crock pot of your best chili to the Legion by 2 p.m. to be considered for first, second and third place prizes. One entry per person. The entry fee is $5.
After judging is complete, the public is welcome to an all-you-can-eat chili supper for $5. Cook-off contestants receive free admittance to the chili supper with their entry fee. For more information regarding the Swisher American Legion Chili Cook-Off, call 319-560-6111.

NLPD seeks assistance in car burglary

North Liberty police officers are asking the public to help identify a suspect in a car burglary investigation. Images of the suspect at the Recreation Center can be seen on http://northlibertyiowa.org.
Those with information can contact the NLPD investigators at 319-626-5724 or the Iowa City Area Crimestoppers at 319-358-8477. Crimestoppers offers a reward of up to $1,000 for tips leading to an arrest.

Troop 216 chili supper Feb. 3

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty Boy Scout Troop 216 will host its 38th annual Chili Supper from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at the North Liberty Community Center.
Tickets are $5. Children 5 and under are admitted free. The dinner includes all-you-can-eat meat or vegetarian chili, bread, drinks and a variety of homemade desserts, including traditional Scout cobbler.
The dinner is the troop’s primary annual fundraising event. Proceeds help cover the cost of high adventure trips, summer camp and other activities for the troop’s approximately 30 Scouts.

Area firefighters cope with difficult fires and brutal weather conditions

JOHNSON COUNTY– Area firefighters, largely volunteer, have dealt with not only a number of challenging house fires, but also brutal sub-zero cold and dangerous wind chill factors. Extreme conditions are not unusual for firefighters as they routinely work in one of the most Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH) environments possible; a “working” structure fire, where flames, toxic smoke and the potential for structural collapse are among the risks. Adding the aforementioned weather conditions, firefighting becomes even more hazardous.

Solon girls lose in final moments against Maquoketa Cardinals

SOLON– The Lady Spartans stumbled the week of Jan. 8-12, dropping a close game on Tuesday, Jan. 9, against the Maquoketa Cardinals, 52-49, in the final minutes and falling short the second half, 41-28, facing Highway 1 rivals the Mount Vernon Mustangs on Friday, Jan. 12.

Spartans rebound from last-second Mt. Vernon loss to topple Regina

IOWA CITY– One day you’re on the wrong end of a bad beat, the next day, you’re back on top.
Such was life for the Solon varsity boys’ basketball team last week.
After bouncing back from their first home loss of the season with a road win at Maquoketa Jan. 9, the Spartans saw an early lead escape and fell at Mount Vernon on a last-second bucket Friday, Jan. 12.
Solon turned around Saturday with a 48-42 win at Iowa City Regina, holding the Regals to their lowest point total of the season and allowing only 14 points over two quarters of play.
