Living Last Supper March 29 at SMS auditorium

SOLON– The Solon United Methodist Church performance of the Living Last Supper is scheduled for March 29 at 7 p.m. in the Solon Middle School Auditorium.
Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting “The Last Supper” comes to life in this dramatic retelling of the night before Christ’s crucifixion. The audience will get the chance to hear from Mary (the Mother of Jesus), the 12 disciples and Christ himself. Discover what discipleship meant to them, learn how many of them were chosen, and relive the tragic betrayal of one.


Solon legion pancake breakfast April 14

SOLON– The Solon American Legion Veterans’ Memorial All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfast will be held Sunday, April 14, at the legion hall from 7 until 11:30 a.m. For $7 adults and $4 children 6-12 (children 5 and under eat free) you will be served pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, biscuits and gravy, juice, coffee and milk.
All proceeds go to the maintenance costs at the Veterans’ Memorial Monument.


Runners get tunnel vision during off-road fundraiser

Solon Survivor Extreme 5K draws 90 runners

SOLON– Organizers for the Solon Survivor Extreme 5K were walking the planned race route looking for a safe place to cross Mehaffey Bridge Road when they all saw the culvert.
“A couple of us went through it and we knew immediately that this was going to be an extreme race,” said Brian Bock.
Bock was also one of the 90 participants in the off-road 5K held Saturday, March 9, as a fundraiser for the Solon Sluggers 12U baseball team and the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. He finished fourth in just under 30 minutes.


Cornell freshman killed north of Solon Saturday

SOLON– A Cornell College freshman and a man from West Union were killed in a two-car collision on Hwy. 1 between Mount Vernon and Solon Saturday night.
Madison “Addie” Hubert, an 18-year-old Cornell freshman from Evergreen, Colo., died in the crash. Wilbur Dennis Bigler, 68, of West Union, was also killed in the collision.
According to the Iowa State Patrol:
The crash happened at about 9 p.m. Saturday night near the intersection of Hwy. 1 and 120th Street, about two miles north of Solon.


Solon district budget back on track

Upgrades: enhanced security planned for middle school

SOLON– Things are looking up for the Solon school district’s budget.
Even though the state has not yet set the allowable growth rate for Iowa schools, it appears the Solon district will be able to lower its tax levy and take on a half-million dollars in summer improvements.
At a meeting Monday, March 11, members of the Solon Community School District (SCSD) Board of Education set an April 8 public hearing date for the $20 million 2013-2014 budget.


Go fish

Payton Haas and her friends won big at the live goldfish game, part of the 18th annual Solon Dollars for Scholars “Bringin’ in the Green” carnival held March 4 at Lakeview Elementary. The event is a fundraiser for the local organization that gives college scholarships to every Solon graduating senior who applies. See more photos in next week’s edition. (photo by Lori Lindner)

Hawkeye men win two more

This is a busy time of year for Hawkeye fans as there was men’s and women’s basketball at Carver-Hawkeye Arena last weekend and the NCAA wrestling championship in Des Moines.
The Hawkeye men got to host two games last week at Carver for the opening round of the NIT and they won them both.
Last Wednesday they knocked off Indiana State, 68-52, and on Friday, Iowa beat Stony Brook, 75-63.

Arva Brockhohn, 78, passed away at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, on Sunday, March 17, 2013. Service was held March 21 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Anamosa. Pastor Bill Nielsen officiated. Interment was at Oakwood Cemetery.

Rickey Dhondt

Rickey Lee Dhondt, 64, died on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at the St. Cloud VA Health Care System, St. Cloud, Minn.
He was born Dec. 22, 1948, in Williamsburg, the son of Marvin James and Nedra (Claypool) Dhondt. He attended Williamsburg High School. Rick served in the United States Army. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, NASCAR and collecting coins and fishing reels.
Local survivors include his sister, Samra Ollendick of North Liberty.


Gerald Forbes

Gerald Jay Forbes, 81, of Lone Tree, passed away on Monday, March 18, 2013, at Pioneer Park in Lone Tree. Funeral services were held March 25 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lone Tree. Father Michael Spiekermeier presided, assisted by Cluster Coordinator Carol Kaalberg. Burial was in the Lone Tree Cemetery with full military rites provided by the Lone Tree American Legion Post 457.
