Basketball Seniors reflect

Senior basketball players have learned life lessons

SOLON–Ben Krutzfeldt, Luke Ira and Jack Stahle spent part of their Solon childhood in the back of the end zone at the old high school football field.
There was one athlete they looked up to with awe.
“James Morris,” the three seniors said in unison.
Morris led the Solon Spartans to three consecutive Class 2A football championships and continued as a linebacker with the Iowa Hawkeyes.
“Whatever sport he was playing, he was dominating,” Stahle said.

Solon Robotics advance

SOLON– Two Solon Robotics teams advanced to the CREATE Foundation’s VEX US Open, April 4-7, at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs
Team 367-C, Donuts, and team 367-D, Gear Destroyerz, qualified by being Tournament Champions and/or receiving the Excellence Award at events across Iowa during the 2017-18 season. They will compete with 98 other middle school teams from across the United States and China in the VEX Robotics game In the Zone.

Begindergarten/Kindergarten Roundup

SOLON– Kindergarten Roundup will be held Thursday, March 22. There will be two sessions to choose from. The first session will be 2-3:25 p.m. and the second will be 4-5:25 p.m. Sign up for Kindergarten Roundup may be completed online beginning Thursday, March 1, through March 21.
Children must turn 5 by Sept. 15 to be eligible to enroll in Begindergarten or Kindergarten and a copy of the original child’s birth certificate must be brought to the Kindergarten Roundup.

Solon Middle School recognized as Model Learning Community

One of about 200 schools and districts in the U.S. and Canada to receive this honor

SOLON– Solon Middle School was recognized by Solution Tree for its sustained success in raising student achievement. The Solon Middle School’s successful implementation of the Professional Learning Communities (PLC) at Work process was a major contributing factor in the improved achievement of its students.

alzheimer’s awareness March 18

SOLON– Solon High School students will present an Alzheimer’s awareness presentation at 11:30 a.m., after Mass on Sunday, March 18, at St. Mary Catholic Church. The event is hosted by Colin Horning and Carl Richey, along with his mother Angela Steinbrech, grandmother Narg Steinbrech, and grandfather Ed Steinbrech, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s five years ago. The presentation itself will provide a basic rundown of the different forms and stages of dementia, how to care for loved ones or friends, and how it affects not only the patient but those around them.

SHS Band can and bottle drive

Choir members to back Foreigner

SHS runs away with online contest through KRNA

CEDAR RAPIDS– How cool is that?
For a group Solon High School choir students, it may be the memory of a lifetime– performing “I Want To Know What Love Is” on stage with Foreigner.
Solon’s choir was one of six finalists in a local promotion facilitated by radio stations KRNA and KDAT on behalf of the rock band Foreigner, which brings a local vocal group on stage for every performance.
In online balloting, Solon ran away with the vote.
Out of the 29,799 votes cast, Solon captured 14,088, or 47.28 percent.

HS students invited to learn about Idaho Backpacking Trek with JC Conservation

OXFORD– This summer, Johnson County Conservation (JCC) will lead a backpacking trip for Iowa high school students to the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness in northern Idaho. To help share details and answer questions, JCC hosts an informational meeting on Thursday, March 29, at 6:30 p.m., held at the Conservation Education Center in F. W. Kent Park. The meeting is open to all interested applicants and their parents/guardians. No registration is necessary.

Volunteers sought for Johnson County boards and commissions

IOWA CITY— The Johnson County Board of Supervisors seeks volunteers to serve on various county boards and commissions. Board and commission members serve in an advisory role to help direct policy by making suggestions and recommendations to the Board of Supervisors and County staff.
