Solon Garden Club to meet Aug. 8

SOLON– The Solon Garden Club will meet at 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 8, at the Solon Public Library. Our Johnson County Urban Conservationist Amy Bouska will share her knowledge on rain gardens. Urban landscapes generate runoff with almost every rainfall event. Conservation measures capture and infiltrate storm water and reduce a property’s contribution to water quality degradation, flash stream flows and flooding. Spongy soil is the secret to most rainscaping practices, including the rain garden.

Highway 1 accident hospitalizes motorists

JOHNSON COUNTY– A vehicle crash on Highway 1 north of Solon on Tuesday, July 26, sent four people to the hospital, including two young girls.
The Iowa State Patrol reports that 63-year-old Christopher Ewer, of Albuquerque, N.M., was southbound on Highway 1 near Seven Sisters Road, when the 2010 Winnebago RV he was driving went out of control and rolled to its side. A northbound Buick Rendezvous, driven by 40-year-old Karla Kruse of New Vienna, Iowa, hit the RV after Kruse tried to swerve to miss the tipped RV but was unable to avoid the collision. Kruse’s vehicle rolled into the east ditch.

Back to Back titles

DES MOINES– For two innings, Solon was behind.
Harlan scored in the opening frame of the Class 3A championship game Friday, pushing a run across on a pair of two-out hits against Solon starter Brandon Shulista.
The Cyclones would score no more.
And would only get two more hits.
The Solon Spartans broke it open in the third inning on the second run through the order, scoring four runs and running away with the 3A championship with a 6-1 win. Shulista went the distance for the win.

NL consents to proposed annexation moratorium

NORTH LIBERTY–A proposal in what has turned out to be a very long, drawn out relationship has been made.
At least, it’s on paper.
But an annexation moratorium between the cities of North Liberty and Coralville has been proposed and accepted before. This time, North Liberty City Council member Terry Donahue wants an “agreement in principal,” he said, within one week.

One vote, no waiting

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty voters may be relieved to learn there will be less standing in line in upcoming elections.
Last Tuesday, July 26, the North Liberty City Council voted 4-1 to accept a proposed map that increases North Liberty’s voting precincts from two to six.
Adding precincts was a mandate, based on population figures returned in the 2010 Census. North Liberty’s population increased to 13,374, and state law requires voting precincts to contain no more than 3,500 people each.
