Summer food and sun safety tips

As summer approaches, it is important to make wise choices in order to protect your skin, food, and overall health so that you and your family can have fun in the sun while staying out of harm’s way.
Food safety Few things in life are better than a summer barbecue, and no barbecue is complete without following the proper food handling procedures below:
• Always wash your hands with warm, soapy water before and after handling food.

Blues is back

NORTH LIBERTY– It’s back on.
The fifth annual Liberty Centre Blues & BBQ festival that was cancelled May 29 due to heavy thunderstorms and damaging winds has been rescheduled for Saturday, July 23, from 12. to 10 p.m. at Liberty Centre in North Liberty.


Walkin'

It’s summer time and the living is so easy that I’m tackling a job long neglected: cleaning the garage.
Actually the chore isn’t so much cleaning as it is sorting through and letting go of parts of my life long past and not to be relived. The softball equipment had to go, for example, as we are in our upper 50s and must come to grips that we’ll never play the sport again.


Food For Thought

A few weeks ago, I received a phone call that proved to be another underhanded attempt to sell me something, even though I have long been on the Do Not Call List. I have written about this problem several times during the past few years, and about a month ago, the Savvy Senior column in this paper described some of the sly methods telephone marketers use to get our attention.


Jean Fee

Jean Ellen Fee, 61, of Center Point, died Saturday, June 18, 2011, at her home. Celebration of Jean’s life was held June 24 at Teahen Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Brenda S. Ehret of Unity Center, Cedar Rapids. Per Jean’s wishes her body was cremated.


Vincent Grabin

Vincent Francis Grabin, 92, of rural Oxford, died Sunday, June 19, 2011, at his daughter’s home.
Services were held June 24 at Oxford United Methodist Church with Reverends Diane Townsley and Sue-Ellen Grabin Sherman officiating.
Burial with full military graveside rites was in the Grabin Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Oxford United Methodist Church or Iowa City Hospice. Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City is handling arrangements.
Vince was born April 8, 1919, on his parent’s farm north of Oxford, the son of Frank “Scout” and Elizabeth (Erusha) Grabin.


Irene Grout

A celebration of life for Irene M. (Chipman) Grout, 85, of Pleasantview Home of Kalona was held June 23 at the Sharon Center United Methodist Church in rural Kalona with Pastor Doug Cue officiating. Burial followed at the South Sharon Cemetery in rural Riverside. Irene Grout died Sunday, June 19, 2011, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a brief illness. A memorial fund has been established for the Sharon Center United Methodist Church or Iowa City Hospice.


Jack Miller

Jack Edward Miller, (“Captain Jack”) died peacefully in his home on St. Maarten, Netherlands Antilles, on Jan. 6, 2011. A memorial was held June 25 at Bobber’s Bar and Grill, North Liberty, celebrating Jack with good friends and good stories.


Jocelyn Johnson

Jocelyn A. “Joie” Johnson, 74, of North Liberty, died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, June 22, 2011. Memorial Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29, at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City.
Jocelyn was born on June 1, 1937, in Marquette, Mich., the daughter of Lester and Jeanette (Brown) Carter. Around the age of 10, Jocelyn moved with her family to Williston, N. D., where she later graduated from Williston High School in 1955. On March 31, 1956, Jocelyn married John Johnson in Williston.


Brenda Diane Roth

Brenda Diane Roth, 55, of North Liberty, died Friday, June 17, 2011, at Windmill Manor in Coralville following a battle with cancer.
A celebration of her life was held on June 23 at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa, with Pastor James Cluney officiating. Her body has been cremated.
A general memorial in the name of Brenda Diana Roth has been established.
