Food For Thought

My memories of early television are scant because my dad refused to buy a television set until the reception was good enough to suit him, which means the only times I saw television prior to the early 1950s was when we visited my grandparents on Sundays and watched, through the grainy snow of the tiny screen, some of the early programs that were mostly just the same old radio shows with milky pictures attached. Chairs were lined up as at the theater, the set was turned on, adjusted, and the lamps were turned off. No one talked or snacked while watching television then.

Walkin'

What do you do when your nose goes on strike?
Every afternoon for the past several weeks at two I’ve been receiving a call on my cell phone from a company in New York. The recorded message states that this is an urgent call with an important message for Cynthia Unger, who should retrieve said message immediately by calling a given 800 number or by simply pressing zero now.

Not so much

On Sunday, Feb. 26, while my son and I were watching the NBA All-Star Game on television at home, Trayvon Martin, a 17-year old black male, was walking back to the home of his father’s fiancé in a gated Florida community. He was shot and killed by a member of a neighborhood watch group who had been following him. Martin was unarmed.
George Zimmerman admitted shooting Martin and claimed self-defense. He has not been charged by authorities.

Bob died from multiple complications following a brief, but sudden illness. Memorial services were held March 30 at Teahen Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, by Pastor Dan Wiersema of Immanuel Baptist Church. Burial was at the Shueyville Cemetery.

Tommy Lee Orris, 71, of Swisher, died Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at Grandview Nursing Home, Oelwein. There will be no services.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents.
Born Aug. 15, 1940, in Independence, Tom was the son of Opal and Ruth (Shannon) Orris. On Aug. 29, 1964, he was united in marriage to Frances Shields. Tom worked for the Duo Fast Corporation in sales.
Tom enjoyed cars, especially Studebakers, gardening, cats and cooking.
Memorials may be directed in Tom’s memory to the Humane Society.

Hawk Talk

Spring Football

This is the second part of a look at Spring Football. Last week I talked about the offensive line, tight ends and fullbacks. This week, I’ll look at the quarterbacks, wide receivers and running backs.
It all starts with James Vandenberg. If he stays healthy and has a good year, the Hawkeyes will have a good year.
All James did last year was pass for 3,022 yards and 25 touchdowns.
Only two Iowa quarterbacks passed for more yards than James. Chuck Hartlieb did it twice and Chuck Long did it once… both were All-Big Ten quarterbacks.

School levy slightly lower for 2012-13

SOLON– Residential property owners in the Solon school district may not feel the slight decrease in the school’s levy on assessed property this year.
The school board will recommend a scant drop of .017 percent from $16.97 per $1,000 of residential assessed value to $16.96 per $1,000. It’s the third lowest property tax rate in 10 years for Solon schools.
Before you spend your .017 percent, know that the state’s assessment limitation, set by the Iowa Department of Revenue on residential (and other) property, also rose this year, from 48.53 percent to 50.752 percent.

Solon is latest to drop industrial arts

By B. Adam Burke
Solon Economist
SOLON– Industrial arts classes are being dropped by local school districts for budgetary reasons and for some, shop classes and other career-focused courses will eventually be replaced by an educational tech center called the Kirkwood Johnson County Regional Center (KJCRC).
KJCRC will be a centralized career academy run by Kirkwood Community College (KCC) at the University of Iowa’s Oakdale campus in Coralville. The new school will be completed in 2014 and is modeled on KCC’s Jones County Regional Education Center, which opened in 2008.
