Mary Kay Volz

Mary Kay Volz, 65, of Norway, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, at All-American Restorative Care of Washington. Services were held Jan. 25 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Norway, with the Rev. Brian Dellaert and the Rev. Tom Zinkula officiating. Private family burial: St. Michael’s Cemetery. Local survivors include Roger (DeeAnna) Volz of North Liberty.

Hawk Talk

Here we go again
The great schedule makers had Nebraska playing the Hawkeye men in Iowa City last Thursday at 6 p.m. and the Iowa women playing Nebraska at Lincoln at 7 p.m. on the same night.
The men’s game was on TV, the women’s was on 1350 AM radio which might as well been from western Canada because it doesn’t come through in Johnson County after dark.
It’s tough enough to lose to Nebraska in football in their first season in the Big Ten but to lose to both the men’s and women’s basketball teams in the same night…

School jazz fests coming up

SOLON– Dorothy Jacobi is doing what she loves every day. She comes in early each day for Jazz I and II to lead, coach and play along in the Solon Middle School jazz scene.
Her favorite part? Watching the music take shape as students begin to command their instruments. She credits the concert ensemble for the high level of playing in the jazz program.

District almost done with OEC fundraising

SOLON– As the seconds tick by, with no timeouts remaining, the Solon Outdoor Events Center (OEC) has entered the final moments of a four-year fundraising campaign for a new 3A-ready stadium.
A springtime groundbreaking on the project will commence after bids for the latest phase are collected by the school board in early March.

Fatality claims child

A kindergarten student at Lakeview Elementary and his father were killed in a two-car collision just northwest of Solon Monday morning. According to reports from the Solon Community School District and the Iowa Highway Patrol, Greg Engrav of rural Solon and his son, Zach, were heading south on Ely Road near the intersection with 140th Street at approximately 8:02 a.m. when their vehicle crossed the center line and struck an oncoming sports utility vehicle head-on. Greg Engrav was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kettle-fried chicken dinner Feb. 4 at Legion

The Solon Sons of the American Legion will hold one of its famous kettle-fried chicken dinners on Saturday, Feb. 4, serving from 5 until 7:30 p.m. Take-out is available. The menu includes delicious kettle-fried chicken, cheesy potatoes, oven baked beans, bread and butter, cake and beverages of coffee, milk or lemonade. The cost is $8 for adults and $4 kids (6-12). Children five and under eat free.

SOLON– Red Cedar Chamber Music in collaboration with Sts. Peter and Paul Historical Foundation presents “Home Sweet Home” at Sts. Peter and Paul Chapel, 1165 Taft Ave., north of Solon, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21. 

Reconstruction begins at Sutliff

SUTLIFF– Three and a half years after historic flooding nearly destroyed it, the Sutliff Bridge reconstruction project has begun.
The controversial project was given the final green light in November with the Johnson County Board of Supervisors awarding the bid for construction work to Iowa Bridge and Culvert, Inc. of Washington. The firm delivered the lowest of six bids at nearly $1.6 million. Previous estimates by VJ Engineering, the firm hired by the County to oversee the project, were around $2.4 million. The project is being funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Early out movie Feb. 2

The early out program for tomorrow, Feb. 2 will be a movie. The funny family film about Mr. Popper and his many penguins (rated PG) will be shown in the meeting room. Movie time will be from 1 until 3 p.m. Fun and free early-out activities are for all Solon students. There is no registration. Children under the age of 10 attending the movie need to be picked up by parents or caregivers at 3 p.m.
