Solon’s Maggie Snider masters a sport for the ages

IOWA CITY– Two figures stand facing each other. They are clad in protective clothing, their faces protected by mesh. Weapons are drawn, an epée, a saber or perhaps a foil. Deft movements and swift swordsmanship ensue as the pair battles to a resolution. But there is no violence, there is no bloodshed. The vanquished lives to duel again.
It’s a hobby and it’s a sport.

All Iowa Reads selection

The 2012 All Iowa Reads title is Tracy Kidder’s “Strength in What Remains,” only the second nonfiction book in the program’s nine-year history. “Strength in What Remains” tells the story of Deogratis, or Deo, who as a 22 year old medical student barely escapes the Hutu slaughter of Tutsis in Burundi. He arrives in New York City in 1994 with no English skills and $200. The story moves back and forth, from Africa to New York. And although the horror of events in Africa is almost indescribable, living poor on the streets of New York as a young black man with no money is not an easy life either.

New Books to Read

“One Moment, One Morning” by Sarah Rayner is a paperback telling the story of a week following a fateful train journey. “One Moment, One Morning” is a stunning novel about love and loss, family and above all, friendship.

Hunger Games popular

Suzanne Collin’s best-selling trilogy, “The Hunger Games Series” has been a highly requested and checked out series. The contents of the story, which takes place in the future, are disturbing with violence and survival. That having been said, these books are page-turners from the start and hard to put down. This haunting series will stick with you long after you have finished reading it.
