ICCSD runs through the numbers

IOWA CITY– Steady, slow growth is projected for the next several years in the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD), as explained by Geoffrey Smith, a doctoral candidate in geography at the University of Iowa. Smith presented his report on district enrollment to the board members Aug. 23, and answered their questions.
According to Smith, over the next five years, the district is expected to grow by almost 10 percent, or 628 students.

Kent Park beach closes Sept. 18

JOHNSON COUNTY– The F.W. Kent Park beach will close for the season at the end of the day (8 p.m.) on Sunday, Sept. 18. For more information contact the Johnson County Conservation Board at 319-645-2315

Local Scout seeks food drive donations

SHUEYVILLE– A local Scout is pursing his Eagle Scout project while helping others.
Colton Valenta, a member of St. Paul’s Church and Scout Troop # 37, supported by Shueyville Methodist Church, is seeking donations of non-perishable food items to benefit the Mission of Hope on First Avenue in Cedar Rapids. Valenta is asking for non-perishable items to be donated in boxes in area Fareway stores or at the following churchs: St. Paul’s Methodist; St. James Methodist; Trinity Methodist; Vineyard Church; First Lutheran Church; St. Stephen’s Lutheran; and the Shueyville Methodist Church.

NL Library seeking crafters for Oct. 8 waffle breakfast

NORTH LIBERTY– Crafters are wanted for the North Liberty Community Library Waffle Breakfast and Craft Sale on Oct. 8, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Friends of the Library will provide space for crafters at the low cost of $15 for one space and $25 for two spaces. Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Three burglaries in NL prompt NLPD reminder: lock your doors

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Police Department would like to remind citizens to keep their homes and vehicles secured. 
During the evening hours of Aug. 24 and the early morning hours of Aug. 25, there were three burglaries to homes in the city of North Liberty. The general locations were the 900 block of Fairview Lane, 400 block of Sugar Creek Lane, and the 800 block of Prairie Ridge Road. 

Too much too soon

TIFFIN– Week one of the high school football season found the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers at home against the Mt. Pleasant Panthers. The Panthers put up a touchdown each quarter, taking the victory 28-16.
The Clippers had the first possession of the night, which came to a sudden stop just three plays in as a Konrad Moore pass was intercepted. It only took the Panthers two plays to put up the first touchdown followed by a successful PAT for the 7-0 lead.

Man’s best friend has a pal to call his own

NORTH LIBERTY– Leaving for the day, weekend or an extended amount of time –for vacation, hospitalization or otherwise – can pose a problem when pets are involved.
Where will they stay, and with whom? How much will it cost, and will the pet feel comfortable? These are just a few questions that may pop up before care of the family pet is entrusted to an outside source.
But one sitter believes the best place to leave a pet is at home and is a decision that offers a health benefit.

Lady Spartans sweep CCA Lady Clippers

SOLON– But for one game, the 2011 season opener last Thursday night pitting the Lady Spartans against the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers would’ve been perfect.
Solon’s freshmen won 25-22 and 25-22, the sophomores won 25-17 and 25-9; and the JV squad prevailed 25-21 and 25-12. The marquee match-up put the varsity squads in action with Solon reigning 3-1.

Solon to vote on Brosh purchase

SOLON– The Solon City Council will ask residents to decide whether or not to purchase the Brosh Chapel as the site for a new city hall.
At an Aug. 3 meeting, council members voted to move forward with the purchase of Brosh location, contingent on voter approval of a bond issue on the November general election ballot.
Now, the city will spend the next two months deciding on financing options and trying to educate the public about the reasons behind the decision.

American Legion Riders raffle

SOLON– The Solon American Legion Riders have launched their fall raffle. Funds from the raffle are used in various community projects– including providing an annual scholarship to a Solon graduating senior whose parent or grandparent has served in the military, and sending Christmas care packages to local service personnel serving around the world during the holiday season.
