Lady Spartans overpower Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON– The Lady Spartans have one more game for the title.
Solon’s varsity volleyball paid back a debt to the Mount Vernon Mustangs last week and will face sixth-ranked West Delaware for the WaMaC East championship.
The Lady Spartans thumped Mount Vernon last Tuesday, Sept. 27, in Mount Vernon, 25-15, 25-12, 25-16. It was the first time Solon has defeated the Mustangs in four years, including some postseason games which prevented the Lady Spartans from advancing to the state tournament.

Quinn Morelock surprised to be in softball hall of fame

SOLON– Former Lady Spartan Quinn Morelock is the first of Solon’s female softball players to receive a top honor.
The outfielder totes statistics that are just one and two points short of breaking state records and others that exemplify her exceptional high school and softball career.
A highlight of her achievements includes a .502 batting average and a slugging percentage of 1.057, a five-year letter winner recipient and a Gatorade Team Player of the Year in 2005.

Spartans take it to South Tama

TAMA– Since the loss to Iowa City Regina in the second week of the season, the Solon Spartans have been taking care of business on the football field.
Friday night, the Spartans rolled up a 35-7 halftime lead against South Tama and were able to hang on comfortably for a 42-20 win.
Austin Dall started the scoring with a 30-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter, but Solon only led 14-7 after the first quarter, thanks to an 88-yard kickoff return by Jordan Wymer.

Solon cross country squads win at Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG– Solon’s Lauren Benzing and Alex Smith were the one-two punch as the Spartan girls rolled at the six-team Williamsburg Invitational, Sept. 26. In the boys’ race, Turner Wentzien was fourth– his top finish of the year– to lead his teammates to their half of a Solon twin-win.
Heading into their last two regular season meets this week– IMS at Wellman was scheduled for this past Monday, and North Linn on Saturday– the Spartans also eye the postseason. The WaMaC Conference meet is Oct. 13. And, the long-awaited state-qualifying assignments came out Monday.

Jo. County gives wind green light

JOHNSON COUNTY– On Aug. 4, Johnson County supervisors gave the green light to a new ordinance that allows commercial wind farms.
PNE Wind, which consulted on the ordinance with the county planning and zoning department, is currently negotiating leases with property owners between Solon and Morse. The proposed 30-megawatt farm will have about 20 turbines stretching across 3,000 acres.

Coming clean

NORTH LIBERTY– When it rains, most of us think about the grass that needs it, the picnic it ruined, the crops it will save or perhaps the basement it will fill.
Few of us think about the whereabouts of that rain once it rolls off our lawns and out of our lives.
The truth is, we should.

Big doings in little Tiffin

TIFFIN— Mayor Royce Phillips has been working on the proposed extension of Ireland Avenue from Railroad Street to US Highway 6 in Tiffin for 44 months. The project has been around even longer.
Finally, the first signs of progress are starting to show.
Demolition crews have taken down two houses along Hwy. 6 to make way for the extension. On Tuesday, Sept. 20, a track hoe stood ready outside one of the condemned structures while workers marked trees with a green “X” to indicate they, too, were coming down.

CCA working with positive numbers

OXFORD– In the 2010-2011 school year, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district took in more money than it spent, and is anticipated to do so again in the 2011-2012 school year.
Board Secretary and Treasurer Lori Robertson presented the district’s “Certified Annual Report” (CAR) at the Sept. 21 school board work session, at Clear Creek Elementary in Oxford.

Be the face of “Blues”

NORTH LIBERTY– It’s that time again– the poster contest for North Liberty Blues & BBQ. It’s not just the poster image though. It’s also used on postcards, in newspapers, on the website, and on signs everywhere. The North Liberty Blues & BBQ planning committee is calling on everyone to enter.
Be warned, this is the sixth year of the celebration and things are getting real creative up in here. Kids are encouraged to enter, too.
Rules of the game:
• Dimensions must be 11x17 or 17x11;
