Food For Thought

I was about 14 or 15 when my Aunt Opal decided it was time I learned to drive a car. The car was my Grandpa’s hump-backed, brown 1939 Chevy with scratchy mohair upholstery and a floor-mounted stick shift. It took more tries than I can count before I got the feel of having found the right gear, letting out the clutch at just the right time, and giving it just enough gas at exactly the right moment to avoid killing the engine.

Walkin'

I’ve been worried this past week, as I’ve learned that federal agents are investigating alleged crimes I committed while publisher of the Solon Economist and North Liberty Leader. The G-men think I tapped phones to get the scoop on stories over our one and only competitor, the Iowa City Press-Citizen (PC).
Of course this is all complete nonsense.

Melanie Taylor

Melanie Jean Taylor died peacefully Sunday, July 10, 2011, at Centennial Hospital, Nashville, Tenn.

Melanie was born in Milwaukee, Wis., on May 5, 1949, and attended Shorewood High School in Milwaukee, Elmira College, Elmira, N.Y., the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the Culinary Institute, Santa Rosa, Calif.
Private graveside services will be held at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, at a time to be determined by the family.

Loless Walters

Loless “Walt” Walters, 80, of Madison, Ind., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday morning, July 20, 2011, in Madison at King’s Daughters’ Hospital. Funeral services were held July 25 at Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. He was laid to rest at Clemons Cemetery in Clemons.

Hawk Talk

Kelly Krei and Matt Gatens have a lot of things in common.
They both grew up in Iowa City and were Hawkeye fans at a young age.
They went to junior high and high school together. They excelled in two sports and they helped lead City High to state championships in basketball… in the same year.
“It is kind of weird that we both happened to win our senior year,” said Kelly. “It was a great thing for City High and we had some great teammates helping us a lot.”
While Matt was competing in basketball and golf, Kelly was running track and playing basketball.
