ICCSD board tables high school money grab for possible bond vote

IOWA CITY– A presentation from new ICCSD financial chief Craig Hansel put the brakes on reallocation of SILO funds for a new high school.
A policy change for $32 million in SILO monies was on the Oct. 2 agenda, but the motion was tabled until the board’s facilities and financial committees could meet again to decide the fate of the facility money pile after Hansel’s slides showed untapped potential.

Scouting for Food Drive Oct. 13

NORTH LIBERTY– The 2012 Scouting for Food Drive will take place on Oct. 13. Please put out food by 8 a.m. Saturday morning for the Scouts to pick-up. All food donated in North Liberty will go to the North Liberty Community Pantry. The pantry is averaging more than 500 visits per month. Please help meet local food needs by putting out non-perishable items on Oct. 13.

Penn school can, bottle drive Oct. 16

NORTH LIBERTY– The Penn Elementary School PTO is holding a can and bottle drive on Tuesday, Oct. 16, from 3 until 6 p.m. at the school on 230 N. Dubuque St. Pop cans and plastic and glass bottles will be accepted. If it has an “IA 5-cent” deposit, they’ll take it. Just drive up and drop them off– they do the sorting. Stone Soup supper for pantry Oct. 28

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Pantry will hold its fourth annual Stone Supper on Sunday, Oct. 28, from 5 until 7 p.m. at the South Slope Community Room in North Liberty. All community members are invited. Cost is $10 for adults (13 and up) and $5 for children (12 and under). Dinner includes soup, salad, bread, dessert and drink. A silent auction will be held from 5 until 6:45 p.m. The North Liberty Community Pantry was founded on the belief that we are neighbors helping neighbors. Please help your neighbors and support the Stone Soup Supper.

Free veterans dinner to be Nov. 13
NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty American Legion Ladies are inviting area veterans to a complimentary Veterans Day dinner for any veteran and one guest at the South Slope conference center in North Liberty.
The dinner will be on Tuesday, Nov. 13. so as not to conflict with veterans attending the USO program at Riverside on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Free car wash Oct. 13 to benefit ICCSD music programs

IOWA CITY– There will be a free car wash on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. to benefit all Iowa City Community
School District (ICCSD) performance music groups. The event is sponsored by the ICCSD Music Auxiliary. Free will donations will gladly be accepted.
There are six locations, so there is no excuse for a dirty car. The locations are:
• North Dodge Hy-Vee, North Dodge St., Iowa City (New location).
• UI Community Credit Union, Penn St., North Liberty (New location).
• Two Rivers Bank, Hwy 6 West, Coralville.

West Music supports ‘Flutes for Food’ effort to benefit area pantries

CORALVILLE– West Music is proud to support the volunteer effort, “Flutes for Food,” a recital featuring West Music flute students on Thursday, Oct. 11, at 6:30 p.m. at the Coralville Center for Performing Arts across the street from West Music. Admission is a donation of non-perishable items, with a goal of reaching 300 pounds of donated items. All donations will be split equally between three area food pantries: Crisis Center of Johnson County, Coralville Ecumenical Food Pantry and the North Liberty Community Pantry.

CCA annual senior supper Oct. 27

TIFFIN– On Saturday, Oct. 27, at 6:30 p.m. the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Student Assistance Team/Interact club will host its annual senior supper (and no, it’s not for 12th graders).
Any district patron over the age of 55 is welcome to come eat a ham or turkey supper provided by students. Tours of the school and card games will be held after the meal. Please call the high school at 319-545-5623 by Oct. 20 if you wish to attend.

NL Pantry becomes United Way of Johnson County partner agency

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Pantry (NLCP) is proud to announce its Partner Agency status with United Way of Johnson County.

Sutliff Bridge reopens with ribbon cutting Friday, Oct. 12

SUTLIFF– The historic Sutliff Bridge officially reopens Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4 p.m.
The ceremony will include Johnson County and FEMA officials, as well as representatives of the Sutliff Bridge Authority and two entities that worked on the project, VJ Engineering and Iowa Bridge and Culvert.
The bridge will be open to the public after the ceremony. The Sutliff Bridge Authority will hold a reopening celebration at a later date.
