NORTH LIBERTY- This spring, left turns onto Highway 965 through North Liberty should get a little easier.
The North Liberty City Council approved a $369,000 contract to install traffic signals at the intersection of Highway 965 and Cherry Street. The contract was awarded to low bidder Advanced Electrical Services, Inc., of Iowa City by unanimous council vote on Feb. 9.
In the contract between Advanced Electrical Services and the city, the costs for signalization equipment and installation total $340,000. Additional costs include removing existing light poles, preparing the ground and providing flaggers and traffic control during construction.
The project is expected to start this spring and should be completed within 60 days, weather permitting.
The signalization project is one of the priorities identified by the council after the entire Highway 965 improvement project- a seven-phase joint project shared between the cities of North Liberty and Coralville, estimated at around $30 million- was scaled back due to a slowing economy, lack of federal funding and the defeat of a local option sales tax referendum that would have helped pay for the improvements.
North Liberty had already been awarded $285,000 in stimulus funding for the Cherry Street signals, as well as $274,000 from a state transportation program for a realignment of Fairview Lane and Golfview Lane. The Fairview/Golfview realignment is included on the city's proposed Capital Improvements Plan for the upcoming fiscal year.
