Celebrating Independence Day and 150 years in a big way in Oxford

OXFORD– With two long blasts of the mighty whistle, and a plume of black smoke, Iowa Interstate Railroad (IAIS) locomotive 6988 started chugging east with a handful of vintage passenger cars filled with riders. The 6988, a Chinese-built QJ Class steam locomotive, was brought to Oxford on Thursday, July 4, to power six excursions to Iowa City and back as a fundraiser for the all-volunteer Oxford Fire Department held in conjunction with Independence Day activities and the town’s 150th anniversary (Sesquicentennial).

County supervisors tackle a $138,000 shortfall in the BHUCC construction estimate

IOWA CITY– Planning continues for Johnson County’s Behavioral Health Urgent Care Center (BHUCC), a one-stop shop for acute substance abuse and behavioral health situations, to be built near the intersection of South Gilbert Street and Southgate Avenue in Iowa City. The county purchased the land one year ago at a cost of $1,350,000. An existing structure was demolished and removed earlier this year.

Creek Boys and Raiders split

CCA holds off Williamsburg’s late charge for 11-8 win, but falls 5-4 in an extra-innings nightcap

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana’s varsity baseball team split in a doubleheader against their rivals to the west, the Williamsburg Raiders, Friday, July 5, at home. The Clippers watched a 10-2 lead vaporize, but held on for an 11-8 win in the opener, but fell 5-4 in the nightcap to move to 14-17 on the season.

Mustangs take two from the Bolts

Liberty baseball falls, 7-6 and 7-2, to Dubuque Hempstead

CEDAR RAPIDS– Liberty High dipped to 15-13 for the season in the wake of a varsity doubleheader sweep Monday, July 1, to the Dubuque Hempstead Mustangs, at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids.
The double dip was originally scheduled to be played in Dubuque, but field conditions prompted the move to the Lightning’s home away from home (the baseball diamond awaits completion on the Liberty High campus), with the Bolts in the role as the visiting team.

Bolts split with Golden Eagles in delayed doubleheader

Liberty softball gets 5-2 win over Dubuque Wahlert Catholic, then falls 6-0

CEDAR RAPIDS– Liberty High’s varsity softball team split with Dubuque Wahlert Catholic in a doubleheader, which took four days to complete due to weather issues.
The squads met on Mount Mercy University’s (MMU) diamond in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday, July 2, where the Lightning picked up a 5-2 win before real lightning and rain postponed the nightcap until Saturday, July 6 (also at MMU). The Bolts fell 6-0 in the second game.

CCA supt. gives his State of the District report

OXFORD– The President of the United States reports on the State of the Union to Congress. The governor gives a State of the State report to the Legislature. Some mayors give a State of the City report to their city councils. In like fashion, Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District Superintendent Tim Kuehl gave a State of the District report to the school board of directors in a pair of work sessions on Tuesday, June 4, and Tuesday, June 11, at Clear Creek Elementary in Oxford.

Liberty High falls 5-1 to Solon, but takes nightcap 11-8

North Liberty Leader
CEDAR RAPIDS– “Let’s have some fun, fellas.” With those words, Tom Cronk sent his Liberty High Lightning, AKA: “The BOLTS,” out on the diamond to open the 2019 season at their home away from home, Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids (Liberty’s “home diamond” this season). The Bolts took on the Solon Spartans in a non-conference doubleheader Monday, May 20, and split with a 5-1 game one loss and an 11-8 nightcap victory.

Preparing for the worst

CCA commissions a study to determine what’s best in case of a tornado

OXFORD– While many things can qualify as a “worst-case scenario,” one situation bound to top the list every time is a tornado hitting a school while it is in session. The nightmare has come true several times with three of particular note.
On April 21, 1967, a tornado scored a direct hit on the Belvidere, Ill., High School just as students were loading buses at the end of the school day. Thirteen deaths and 300 injuries were reported at the school. According to Tom Grazulis of The Tornado Project, this was the nation’s sixth-worst school death toll from a tornado.
