Clippers face Storm and Pointers in first game

CP-U upends CCA, 17-10, in soggy season opener at home

TIFFIN– Center Point-Urbana has been known as “The Stormin’ Pointers” for many decades. Friday, Aug. 28, in Tiffin, they stormed the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers’ homeport for a 17-10 season-opening win. Mother Nature stormed, too, with rain throughout much of the game and an hour-and-a-half lightning delay.

Utility’s policy change adds another delay to CCA middle school project

TIFFIN— The addition to the Clear Creek Amana middle school in Tiffin has been plagued with construction delays from the start. Completion dates have moved steadily further into the upcoming school year, with a revised estimate of completion now pushed to December on a project that was supposed to have been completed well ahead of the Sept. 1 school start date.

2015 honoree went from WW2 battlefields to Solon State Bank

SOLON– Don Erusha has been a part of the Solon community since taking on duties at the Solon State Bank in 1963, retiring as Executive Vice President in 2000, and has had a hand in several key endeavors since. For his contributions to Solon, Erusha was named one of two 2015 Seniors of the Year.
The 92-year old acknowledged his busy past. “I was (busy), but not anymore. I’m not doing very much around here anymore,” he said.
Erusha continues as a member of the Solon Area Community Foundation (SACF), an organization he helped start.

In the not-so-hot seat

CCA school board candidates run unopposed, make their cases for election to an empty room

OXFORD– Voters in the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District will have an easy time deciding whom to vote for in the school board of education election on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Four of CCA’s five board candidates are incumbents, and all five are running unopposed on the official ballot.
The lack of challenges in the race could account for the lack of public attendance at the forum held Tuesday, Aug. 11, at Clear Creek Elementary in Oxford.

Clipper football kicks off the season in a big way with singer Jake McVey

TIFFIN– There are many ways to conduct a fundraiser, but when Clear Creek Amana (CCA) coach Matt Hughes went looking for a way to raise some additional money for the high school football program, he decided to go big.

Stastny still spends much of his time serving the community

“I’m kind of a joiner”

SOLON— If there’s something going on in Solon, odds are Marv Stastny is in the thick of it.
Stastny, one of two men honored this year as Solon’s Seniors of the Year, has made a career of volunteering to serve the community. A native of Ely, Stastny spent 20 years there, including two years on the Ely Volunteer Fire Department.

Familiar faces to fill CCA school board ballot

OXFORD — Four incumbents are running for reelection to the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District Board of Directors in the upcoming school board election to be held Tues., Sept. 8.
Current board members Terry Davis, Matt McAreavy, Bob Broghammer and Steve Swenka are seeking reelection this cycle. Davis, of Oxford, is running for one of two At Large seats with McAreavy, also of Oxford. McAreavy was appointed to the District Two seat to fill the vacancy created when former board member Kevin Kinney was elected to the State House. The At Large seats carry four-year terms.

Masons consecrate new Tiffin Elementary School with cornerstone ceremony

TIFFIN — When cathedrals were built across Europe thousands of years ago, the first stone placed was the cornerstone. Extreme importance was placed on it being square, level and plumb. Centuries later, laying the cornerstone became more of a symbolic process, as when George Washington presided over the Masons’ Masonic cornerstone ceremony for the United States Capitol building in 1793.
The Masons continue the tradition today, and performed the cornerstone ceremony for the Clear Creek Amana Community School District (CCA) at the new Tiffin Elementary on Sat., Aug 1.

OXFORD– Something just doesn’t make sense to Lydia Bringer.
“I don’t understand why I have this love for the flag more than kids who were born here.”
Bringer was born in Mexico and came to the United States legally after the death of her mother. She underwent the long, arduous and expensive process to gain citizenship and proudly proclaimed the Pledge of Allegiance when it was granted. Before she accepted citizenship, she did a little soul searching.

DES MOINES– For the second year in a row, the Iowa City West High Trojans faced the Rams of Southeast Polk in the Class 4A State Championship baseball game, and for the second year in a row, the Rams walked away with the championship trophy.
West fell 6-2 to the Rams in the Class 4A Championship game on Saturday, Aug. 1, at Principal Park in Des Moines. It was the ninth state appearance for the team and the fourth state runner-up title. When Johnson County law enforcement needs to get to the bottom– literally– they

IOWA CITY— Johnson County citizens have a variety of public safety agencies on duty around the clock to protect them, ranging from traditional fire departments and law enforcement agencies to the county’s ambulance service. Specialty units such as the Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) Response Team, the Sheriff’s SWAT team, County Rescue 52 and the bomb squad supplement these organizations.
But one such unit operates literally in the murky shadows most of us never see.

NL organizers hope to make a case for off-leash dog park

NORTH LIBERTY— In 2009, a North Liberty resident had an idea for an off-leash dog park where her canine companion could run freely and play with other four-legged friends. In 2012 that vision faded, but a new group is picking up where she left off.
