CR Jefferson tests West, pulls off doubleheader upset

IC West falls 7-4, 8-4 to J-Hawks

CEDAR RAPIDS– As he was watching the Cedar Rapids Jefferson J-Hawks warming up, West High coach Justin Lutjen said the doubleheader would be a good test for his Women of Troy.
Not only did the J-Hawks test West, the blue birds got the better of them with an upset sweep of the No. 1 (according to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s June 26 rankings) team in Class 5A. Jefferson was the No. 5 ranked team.
In doing so, Jefferson also handed West its first MVC losses of the season, and the team’s third loss in a row following a Saturday, June 27, non-conference loss to Solon.

A unique fire engine for a unique area

Jefferson-Monroe Fire Department saves money while saving lives, property

SWISHER– There’s a new fire engine in town, and its uniqueness goes beyond the curves of its four-door cab. The truck, a 2009 Spartan “Furion” chassis with body by Rosenbauer will increase the efficiency of the Jefferson-Monroe Twp. Fire Department (Swisher Fire) while improving safety for the volunteer firefighters and saving the taxpayers money in the process.

Road warriors

Volunteers in Ely pick up what others toss out

ELY– Aluminum cans, fast food wrappers, plastic drink bottles, scraps of wood, chunks of Styrofoam and assorted miscellaneous car parts were some of the items recovered and deposited into large orange trash bags by seven kids on a clean-up mission Sunday, April 26, along Ely Road just north of Ely.
The kids– Audrey Sellon, Kaitlyn Sellon, Noah Klamerus, Hunter Andersen, Lake Klamerus, Sam Smith and Aidan Sellon– were led by Ely Public Library director Sarah Sellon in a semi-annual clean up event sponsored by the library.

retaining recruits

This is the second installment of a three-part series on the ways the North Liberty Fire Department– a volunteer unit with only three paid positions– continues to meet the challenges of protecting an ever-growing community.

NORTH LIBERTY– In addition to studying, training, relaxing and cooking, North Liberty Fire Department (NLFD)’s members now have the luxury of a bed to sleep in while pulling overnight shifts at the station. It’s a recent and particularly convenient addition for those volunteers who live out of town.

Spartans sweep Clippers

Solon takes pair from CCA, 13-6 and 3-2, in Tiffin

TIFFIN– Soggy conditions at Spartan field led to a last-minute move to Tiffin for the annual baseball clash between Solon and Clear Creek Amana (CCA) on Thursday, June 25, in WaMaC conference baseball. When the dust settled, the Spartans had swept the Clippers 13-6 and 3-2, improving their record to 12-11 while dropping CCA below the .500 mark to 10-12.
Despite the move, the Spartans remained the home team on the scoreboard and faced the Clippers in their road blue uniforms.

NLFD answering the call

This is the first installment of a three-part series on the ways the North Liberty Fire Department– a volunteer unit with only three paid positions– continues to meet the challenges of protecting an ever-growing community.

NORTH LIBERTY— As of 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5, the North Liberty Fire Department (NLFD) had responded to 333 alarms. Assistant Chief William Schmooke expects plenty more.
“We’re going to push over 1,000 calls this year,” he said, up from 983 last year.

Blue Jays fly away with CCA’s state tourney hopes

Clippers rout Raiders but fall, 2-1, to Bondurant-Farrar

TIFFIN– According to National Geographic, blue jays exhibit “raucous and rambunctious behavior.” They also move “stealthily, plundering other birds’ nests.”
The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers found out firsthand what Blue Jays can do as they fell 2-1 to the Blue Jays of Bondurant-Farrar in a Class 1A Regional Semifinal girls soccer game on Friday, June 5, in Tiffin. The Clippers ended the season at 16-2 overall.
Kelsey Hall scored the Clippers’ only semifinal goal in the 57th minute, off a Bailey Mooney assist, breaking a 0-0 deadlock.

Supervisors, Shueyville discuss improvements to Curtis Bridge Road

Unique situation, unique proposal

SHUEYVILLE– For anybody who has driven the length of Curtis Bridge Road in northwest Johnson County, to say it is in bad shape would be an understatement. Its dilapidated condition led county officials to move the road up on its Five-year Road Maintenance and Improvement Plan, with work scheduled to begin late this summer.
Some surface material will be ground down, and the road will be widened two feet on either side before a hot asphalt overlay is applied for a smoother ride.

West beats City in final-seconds thriller

Pottratz kicks winning goal

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy remained unbeaten with a 2-1 victory over rival City High Monday, May 18, at the University of Iowa soccer field, doing it in dramatic fashion.
A scoreless first half gave way to the Little Hawk’s scoring with nine minutes remaining.

North Central eighth graders attend Financial Literacy Fair

CORALVILLE — Shaneka Johnson’s eyes popped out as her jaw dropped as she learned first hand just how expensive it is to buy a house or rent an apartment. Johnson was one of the North Central Jr. High eighth graders taking part in a Financial Literacy program sponsored by the Workplace Learning Connection (WLC) in partnership with the University of Iowa Community Credit Union Monday April 20 at the Coralville Library.

Underground tanks enhance Shueyville fire protection

Not a solution but an improvement

SHUEYVILLE– Small town and rural volunteer fire departments face many challenges, ranging from difficulties in recruiting members to having enough money to pay for equipment. The Jefferson-Monroe Twp. Fire Department, in Swisher, has another challenge.
“Our biggest obstacle here is, we have no water in the communities we serve,” said Deputy Chief Eugene Beard.

Students, pros have 77 days to build CCA’s STEM Center

TIFFIN— Shortly after the end of the current school year, construction will begin on the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Center on the campus of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District in Tiffin. At the heart of the project will be a dozen students from CCA and other schools in Kirkwood Community College’s seven-county area. The students will work alongside seasoned professionals as they gain hands-on training in the construction trades, as well as college credit through Kirkwood.
