Jail: finally light at the end of a long, dark tunnel

County commits to securing bids for repair

IOWA CITY– Johnson County Supervisor Rod Sullivan wants people to fully understand the situation with the county jail, and its estimated $1 million repair and renovation project.
“We’re not just fixing it up,” he said. “Our hand has been forced.”
Sullivan and his fellow supervisors unanimously approved the plans, specifications, and bid requests for badly-needed work at the facility, which was built in the 1980s. The resolution passed during the formal meeting Thursday, Oct. 2.

Senior Night sweep

IOWA CITY– Defense made the difference, said West High coach Randy Dolson. His Women of Troy swept Cedar Rapids Prairie 3-0 in a Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) match Tuesday, Oct. 21, at home. The win sweetened Senior Night where Madi Miller, Mikaela Morgan and Laynie Whitehead were honored for their contributions to West High volleyball.
West came from behind to take the first set 25-20 and overcame a late deficit to take the second set 25-22. The Women of Troy dominated the third set 25-12 for the win.

The fog of (gridiron) war

IOWA CITY– A 21-7 lead vaporized into the mist of a foggy night for the West High Trojans as they fell 38-24 to the Pleasant Valley (PV) Spartans Friday, Oct. 24, at home. The loss was doubly bitter for the Trojans as the Spartans claimed the Class 4A District 7 championship (with a 4-0 record in district play and 6-3 record overall), and did so on West High’s Senior Night.

Tiffin’s Deer View residents confront CCA school board

Pushback abounds on new elementary’s boundary lines

OXFORD– When the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district began the process of creating new elementary school attendance areas, the district’s consulting firm assisting in the effort stated a hard and cold fact: once the process was complete, somebody would be unhappy with the result.
The consultants reiterated the point at every attendance and boundary study committee meeting, the public input meeting, the school board work session in September when Superintendent Tim Kuehl made his recommendation, and at the regular board meeting a week later when the plan was approved.

West tripped up in overtime

West falls to Bettendorf, 28-27

IOWA CITY– “Gut-wrenching.”
That’s how West High football coach Garrett Hartwig described his squad’s 28-27 loss in overtime to Bettendorf Friday, Oct. 3, at home.
“I got more respect for the 53 men in that room (gesturing toward the locker room) right now than anybody else,” Hartwig said. “At this point in the season, it’s about executing. Bettendorf executed, credit goes to them they’re a great program.” Hartwig said his Trojans were getting better, but “we’re not where we need to be yet.”
