Spring football scrimmage

Hawk Talk

Last Saturday the Hawkeyes held their final practice of the spring with a scrimmage.
I’ll try to break down the offense, defense and special teams.

Offense

The offense won the game 46-31 on a couple of touchdown passes, a rushing touchdown and three field goals by Marshall Koehn.
They also received points for plays over 20 yards.
Jake Rudock is a solid number-one quarterback. Going against the defensive starters, Jake was 11-22 for 165 yards and a touchdown pass.
Jake’s lone bad pass was a 35-yard throw against the wind that Desmond King picked off.

Spring Football

This is the fourth story on spring football.
This week I’ll look at the linebackers, defensive backs and special teams.

Linebackers

The Hawkeyes have to replace three really good linebackers.
James Morris, Anthony Hitchens and Christian Kirksey combined to start 104 games in the last four years.
None of the three red shirted and they totaled 985 career tackles.
The first time I saw James play was his junior year at Solon.
James was an all-state running back and all-state linebacker.

This is the third part of a review of the University of Iowa football program this spring.
This week, I’ll talk about the quarterbacks and defensive line.
Jake Rudock is the number-one quarterback in spring training.
If Jake stays healthy, I see no reason he won’t be number one in the opening game against UNI Aug. 30.
The 6-3, 208-pound junior was 204-346 (59 percent) passing for 2,383 yards, 18 touchdown passes, 13 interceptions and Iowa finished 8-5.

Spring Football

Hawk Talk

This is the second part of a look at Hawkeye spring football.
Last week, I talked about the offensive line and tight ends.
This week, I’ll look at the wide receivers, running backs and full backs.
Jordan Cotton and Don Shumpert are gone at wide-out.
Jordan, who caught 15 passes and one touchdown in his career, will be missed as an All-Big Ten kick returner.
The former Mount Pleasant prep led the Big Ten in kick returns as a junior, averaging 28.2 yards per return, including a 92-yard return for a touchdown against Penn State.

Hawkeye women win big

Iowa rolled over the Marist Red Foxes, 87-65, Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena for a first-round victory in the NCAA tournament.
The game was supposed to be close because the Red Foxes had five players averaging in double figures like the Hawks. They were 27-6 coming into the game, Iowa was 26-8, they were a good passing team and played good defense.
There were a few things missing.

Lions & Tigers & Wildcats?

Hawk Talk

When the Hawkeyes lost their last regular season game to Illinois, 66-63, I thought, or was hoping, that game was going to be the low point of the season.
I really hate it when I’m wrong.
The 67-62 loss to Northwestern last Thursday was not only the lowest point of the season, it came against a team that Iowa has beaten five straight times, the last two times by over 25 points.
Fran McCaffery has some major challenges ahead and the main ones are not even related to Iowa basketball.
I don’t have any kids, but still I couldn’t imagine finding out your 13-year-old son has a tumor.
