Wrestlers win Midlands

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeyes had three champions, including Thomas Gilman (125 pounds) who won his third-straight Midland title.
Brandon Sorensen (149) scored a takedown and back points to win a 7-1 decision but the most exciting match was redshirt freshman Michael Kemerer at 157.
Michael, who came in ranked second, knocked off the No. 1 seed Tyler Berger of Nebraska in the finals.
The match went into two sudden victory overtimes and both wrestlers were given points in OT that were reversed.
Michael finally pulled it out with a 6-5 win.

Doubleheader win at Carver

Hawk Talk

Last Tuesday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, the women and men played a doubleheader, with the women cruising 83-48 over Kent State and the men winning, 84-73, over North Dakota.

Hawkeye women

Something wasn’t right when the Hawkeyes started their game against Kent State.
The Hawks missed four straight shots while Kent State made three straight.
The 6-0 lead, with only three minutes gone in the game, was enough for Head Coach Lisa Bluder to call a 30-second timeout and send in the second five.

Hawkeye men cruise over UNI

I thought the Hawks had a good chance of knocking off the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) Panthers last Saturday in Des Moines, but a 23-point win?
Are you serious?
It just seemed like everything Iowa did was successful and everything UNI did wasn’t.
One of the toughest things to teach freshmen is defense.
Not just man-to-man defense, but zone defense, help defense and communicating on defense.
Iowa starts two freshmen, a redshirt freshman, one sophomore and a senior.
Only Peter Jok and Ahmad Wagner played together last season.

It’s a Hawkeye state

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeyes played the Cyclones three times last week, twice in basketball and once in wrestling.
All were in Carver-Hawkeye Arena and all three were Hawkeye wins.
I know Iowa and Iowa State play for the Cy-Hawk trophy every year. That includes over 14 different competitions between the schools, but when the Hawks win the big four– football, men’s and women’s basketball and wrestling– in my opinion it’s a Hawkeye state.

Hawkeye men

First Iowa beat Stetson, 95-68, and then they took out Iowa State, 78-64.

Hawkeye wrestling

Hawk Talk

For the 13th straight time, the Hawkeyes were too much for the Cyclones and Iowa won last Saturday, 26-9.
Thomas Gilman (125), Brandon Sorensen (149) and Sammy Brooks (184) picked up bonus points for Iowa, but Head Coach Tom Brands said there is a lot of work to be done.
“We were in some holes and the good thing is we bailed ourselves out of some holes,” said the head coach. “Our guys need to be thinking about scoring points when they’re out there. Guys don’t fall down when you blow on them. They fall down when you put them down.”

Hawkeye hoops

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye men and women each had two games last week and both started the week playing against Notre Dame.

Hawkeye men

Iowa traveled to Notre Dame last Tuesday, got beat 92-78, but I thought the score was a little misleading.
I was more than a little surprised when the game started and I didn’t see Tyler Cook in the starting lineup. Tyler was the second leading scorer for the Hawks (13.7) and the leading rebounder coming into the game.

Hawkeyes going to the Outback Bowl

Iowa is going bowling for the 14th time since Kirk Ferentz became head coach.
The Hawks will be facing 18th-ranked Florida Tuesday, Jan. 2, in the Outback Bowl at noon.
Since 2001, no Big Ten team has won more bowl games, or has a higher winning percentage in bowl games than Iowa.
This will be the fifth time the Hawks have been in the Outback Bowl.
The Gators (8-4) averaged 23.4 points, 129.8 rushing yards and 215.2 passing yards.
Iowa’s defense gave up an average of 17.9 points, 153.2 rushing yards and 199.7 passing yards.

Iowa wrestlers

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeyes won eight of 10 matches at 20th-ranked South Dakota last Friday, winning 29-8.
Iowa could have won nine of 10 but Cory Clark didn’t wrestle at 133 and the Hawks lost that weight on a technical fall.
Sammy Brooks (184) and Topher Carton (141) both had major decisions while Thomas Gilman (125) had a tech fall.

How sweet it is

Hawk Talk

Iowa defeats Nebraska, 40-10

The Hawkeye football team played its best overall game of the season on Black Friday as it came up with big plays on offense, had a shutdown defense and special teams were almost perfect.
Can you believe it was 1981 the last time the Hawks beat the Cornhuskers in Iowa City?
How about this: the 40-10 win ties the largest margin of victory over Nebraska since 1899 (30-0)!
I was at the 1981 win which was also Kirk Ferentz’s first game as a Hawkeye line coach.

SHUTDOWN

Hawk Talk

Iowa blanks Illinois, 28-0

I thought the Hawks might be a little flat after an emotional loss at Penn State and then an emotional win against Michigan at Kinnick Stadium.
Two straight night games, two completely different results, and then you have an 11 a.m. game with Illinois, which came into the contest 3-7.
Against Michigan, a safety by Jaleel Johnson got the Hawks on the scoreboard first after trailing 10-0.
Last Saturday, it was Riley McCarron breaking open a scoreless tie returning an Illinois punt for a 55-yard score with 4:33 left in the first half.

Iowa defeats Michigan 14-13

Hawk Talk

Something was missing.
The Hawkeyes had lost three straight at Kinnick Stadium after going undefeated at home last season.
North Dakota State knocked off Iowa, 23-21, on a 37-yard field goal as time ran out on Sept. 17.
Northwestern beat the Hawks, 38-31, on Oct. 1.
On Oct. 22, the Badgers came to Kinnick and left with a 19-7 win.
Last Saturday, under the lights, the magic at Kinnick was back.
Freshman Keith Duncan split the uprights from 33 yards out as time ran out and the Hawks knocked off the third-ranked Wolverines, 14-13.
Iowa is 3-1 this season when scoring 14 points.

Season on the brink

Iowa caught in Penn State nightmare, 41-14

By Don Lund

Not in my wildest (bad) dreams did I see this coming for the Hawkeye football team.
I really believed Iowa had a shot at winning the Big Ten West for the second season in a row.
I wasn’t the only one.
I kept the two preseason football magazines and both of them thought the Hawks would compete for the West title.
