Hawks take on instate battles

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye men took down Drake Saturday at Des Moines and the women played at The University of Northern Iowa (UNI) Sunday.
The men’s 90-64 win over the Drake Bulldogs last weekend was a little surprising.
The Bulldogs were coming off a tough loss at Minnesota, 68-67.
Drake led the Gophers at half 28-24, had a 29-4 advantage on bench points and made 12 3-pointers.
Against the Hawkeyes, Drake trailed at half 40-33 and made only nine threes.
The Bulldogs came into the game shooting 42 percent from behind the arc.

Jewell and Jackson - consensus All-Americans

Hawk Talk

Before the season started, Iowa had 23 consensus All-Americans.
Now it has 25.
To be a consensus All-American, you have to be on at least three All-American teams.
Josey Jewell and Josh Jackson were named on the Walter Camp, Associated Press, Sporting News, the AFCA and the FWAA All-American first team squads.
This is the fifth time in Hawkeye program history two Hawks earned consensus All-American in the same season.

Cy-Hawk week

Hawk Talk

Last week, the Hawkeye women traveled to Ames on Wednesday to play the Cyclones, the men went to Cyclone country on Thursday.
The last time the Iowa Hawkeye women beat the ‘Clones in Ames was 1989.
I was 35 years old and the Iowa football team was coming off a 5-6 record, 3-5 in the Big Ten.
I remember the last game at Kinnick Stadium, which was a 43-7 knockdown by Minnesota. The fans were booing at the end of the game with Matt Rodgers at quarterback.
It wasn’t pretty.
Of course, the team would bounce back in 1990, win the Big Ten and go to the Rose Bowl

Hawkeye men play two

Hawk Talk

The Iowa men’s basketball team opened the week playing in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge last Tuesday against Virginia Tech, losing 79-55.
It was a tale of two halves at the Hawks looked sharp in the first half with the score tied 38 all at halftime. Great ball movement, Jordan Bohannon going 4-4 from 3-point range and Iowa winning the rebound battle, 21-11.
Iowa also had a 20-12 advantage on points in the paint, shot 51 percent from the floor and 50 percent from behind the arc.

“The Hawks blow up Nebraska”

The headline comes from the words that Gary Dolphin, Iowa’s play-by-play radio announcer, said as time ran out Black Friday in Lincoln.
The Iowa Hawkeyes blew the Huskers out in the second half, breaking a 14-14 halftime tie and scoring 42 unanswered points.
I have been to Lincoln once to see Iowa play Nebraska.
The year was 1980 and one of my homeboys from Moville, Kim Clark, was working in Lincoln and I went over for the weekend to go to the game with him.
The final score… 57-0!

Jackson earns Jack Tatum Award

Hawk Talk

IOWA CITY– University of Iowa junior defensive back Josh Jackson has been named the recipient of the 2017 Jack Tatum Award as the best defensive back in the nation. The award was announced Tuesday by the Touchdown Club of Columbus, and is named for the late Ohio State and NFL legend Jack Tatum.

105-80 win over Northern Illinois

Hawk Talk

The Iowa women opened up the week with a 105-80 win over Northern Illinois.
It was textbook Lisa Bluder basketball.
All five starters were in double figures and Hannah Stewart came off the bench scoring 13 points with two blocked shots.
Alexis Sevillian made her first start with Kathleen Doyle out with an injury.
Alexis looked like she belonged, scoring 15 points in 30 minutes.
Makenzie Meyer and Tania Davis combined for 15 assists and Tania had a career-high 10 rebounds.

Hawks pull through with a win

Hawk Talk

The men had a little tougher time against Grambling State last week at Carver.
The game was tight until the middle of the second half when the Hawks pulled away and won, 85-74.
Iowa had five players in double figures led by Jack Nunge off the bench with 17.
Jack hit three 3-pointers, grabbed seven rebounds, had two assists and one blocked shot. He is such a tough matchup at 6-11– shooting 50 percent from 3-point range and 56 percent from the floor.
Tyler Cook and Isaiah Moss each had 15 points.

UNDERWHELMING

Hawk Talk

H2>Wisconsin stifles
Iowa, 38-14

As good as the Hawkeyes looked against Ohio State last week, they looked that bad against Wisconsin Saturday.
Sixty-six total yards (the lowest under Kirk Ferentz) and 0-13 on third down conversions will not win any games.
Was it the Badger defense being that great or the Hawkeye offense being that bad?
I’d lean towards the Badger D is pretty good.
Wisconsin’s 3-4 defense frustrated Iowa all afternoon.

UNBELIEVABLE

Iowa upsets No. 3
Ohio State, 55-24

By Don Lund
Sports Writer
Iowa’s first game ever against Ohio State was in 1922 and the Hawkeyes won, 12-9.
The Hawks actually won the first three of four and four out of the first eight, but since then only 11 more wins in the last 85 years, including last Saturday’s 55-24 upset.
That’s 15 victories since the series started.
The overall record is now 15-47-3.

Hawkeye men show depth

Hawk Talk

Iowa Head Men’s Basketball Coach Fran McCaffery said at media day this year’s team has the most depth he’s had since he’s been here, especially in the front line.
The first two exhibition games have shown, so far, he is right.
Iowa played 15 players in the opener, including two walk-ons and Christian Williams, who has since transferred.
The emergence of freshman Conner McCaffery had to be one of the main reasons Williams transferred.
McCaffery was running No. 2 at point guard in practice.

Iowa defense shines

Hawk Talk

For the second week in a row, the Hawkeye defense held its opponent to 10 points in regulation.
Last Saturday against Minnesota, the offense came up with 17 points and the pig stays in Iowa City... Iowa defeats Minnesota, 17-10.
That’s the sixth time this season Iowa has held an opponent to under 20 points.
Phil Parker, Iowa’s defensive coordinator, said he thought the Hawkeyes’ front seven was as good as he has seen it since he’s been here.
The defensive backfield was a different story.
