Hawkeye men and women have 20 wins

The Hawkeye men needed to win their last two home games and maybe two games in the Big Ten Tournament to have a shot at the NCAA tournament.
The got one in a good win over Illinois, 63-55, last week at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
It was another one of those grind-it-out games, but Devyn Marble and Iowa’s bench were too tough for the Fighting Illini.
Devyn was 10-10 from the free throw line, scoring 21 points with six rebounds and four assists.
Devyn has really stepped up his game since Mike Gesell went down with a foot injury, and has carried the team to a 2-1 record without Mike.

Hawk men split

The Hawkeye men took on both Indiana teams last week, hosting Purdue last Wednesday and traveling to Indiana on Saturday.
The Boilermaker game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, which Iowa won 58-48, was one of those grind-it-out games that wasn’t a lot of fun to watch… unless you were an Iowa fan.
It didn’t help that Mike Gesell was out with a stress fracture. He has averaged the most minutes since the Big Ten season started and might be back for the Big Ten Tournament.
Devyn Marble looked good taking over the point. He had 18 points, four assists and only three turnovers in 29 minutes.

Tough weekend for the Hawkeyes

Last weekend wasn’t fun for Hawkeye basketball and wrestling fans.
The men’s basketball team blew a 19-point first half lead and lost at Nebraska, 64-60, on Saturday.
The wrestlers lost two meets to Minnesota and Missouri finishing fourth at the National Dual meet in Minneapolis Saturday afternoon and night.
On Sunday, the Iowa women got beat 66-46 by Nebraska.

Hawkeye Wrestling

We’ll start with wrestling.
Led by a pin from Tony Ramos, the Hawkeye wrestlers knocked off Cornell 21-16 in the first round of the National Dual meet championship last Friday.

Big Ten champs

While I was talking about the Hawkeyes’ new football recruits last week, the Iowa wrestlers finished the Big Ten season undefeated, the men’s basketball team picked up a couple of wins and the women’s basketball team is in a big time slump.

Iowa wrestling

When the Hawkeyes knocked off Nebraska, 31-7, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday, Feb. 10, they also won the Big Ten duals title.
Two days before, the Hawks took down Illinois, 25-12, but Matt McDonough lost his first match of the year.

21 new Hawkeyes

It’s time to take a break from basketball and wrestling and talk about Iowa’s new football recruits.
I got a chance to sit down with Reese Morgan last Wednesday to talk about the new kids on the block.
Reese, who coached the offensive line for eight years, is now the defensive line coach.
First I had to ask him about Marshal Yanda, former Hawkeye offensive lineman, who helped the Baltimore Ravens win the Super Bowl.
Reese not only helped recruit him but coached him, too.

No. 1 Penn State falls

Hawkeye Wrestling
The Hawkeye wrestlers took down the Nittany Lions, 22-16, last Friday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
What a great meet!
What a great crowd (15,000-plus)!
What a great win!
It’s been three years since the Hawkeyes won the Big Ten Championship and the NCAA title.
Iowa has one loss this year to Oklahoma State, but is the only unbeaten team left in the Big Ten.
Matt McDonough, Derek St. John and Mike Evans won one-point matches, Tony Ramos got a pin and Mark Ballweg got a major to lead the Hawkeyes.

Hawkeye wrestlers edge out Minnesota

Hawk Wrestling
The Hawkeyes won five matches, Minnesota won five but Iowa took the meet with a 41-33 advantage in match points Saturday in Minnesota.
The big three– Matt McDonough, Tony Ramos and Derek St. John– led the way with decisions.
It would have been nice for Tony to get one more takedown at 133 to get a major. He won 8-2 but couldn’t get a takedown at the end.
Mark Ballweg had a solid 3-1 win at 141 but it was Nick Moore’s 8-2 decision at 165 that helped put Iowa in front.

Chris Street remembered

I doesn’t seem like it was 20 years ago last Saturday that Chris Street died in an auto accident.
The Hawkeyes honored Chris by beating Wisconsin, the only undefeated team left in the Big Ten, 70-66, before a jam-packed, very loud and excited crowd.
I remember that night of the accident 20 years ago as I was sitting at home watching TV around 7:30 p.m.
I got a call from Deanna Slade, who was a neighbor of mine.
Deanna asked me, “Is there a football player named Chris Street?”
I said, “No, he plays basketball.”

2012 year in review

2012 is gone and we’ll take a look back at the basketball, wrestling and football seasons.

Road trips for the Hawks

Last weekend the Hawkeye men’s and women’s basketball teams traveled to Des Moines to take on the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) and Drake, winning both.
The Hawk men played the Panthers on Saturday, jumping out early and holding on, 80-73.
Last year, Iowa lost to both UNI and Iowa State, so this was a good win.
Devyn Marble and Mike Gesell were the one-two punch that knocked out the Panthers.
Devyn did it all last Saturday, playing 37 minutes, scoring 30 points with four rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
