Bond issue firm at 25.5 million

Language for Sept. 9 ballot on June 26 agenda

SOLON– The Solon school board is expected to finalize a Sept. 9 date for a $25.5 million bond issue referendum later this month.
According to Solon Superintendent Sam Miller, the district is planning a special board meeting Thursday, June 26, to accept a petition calling for a bond issue and to consider a resolution calling for a special election.
It’s a big step for the district, which has been discussing potential facility needs for months.

City to eat unsavory premium increase for Tiffin employees

TIFFIN– The cost of health insurance rarely goes down.
And once in a while, there’s a spike in premiums that really causes jaws to drop.
The City of Tiffin encountered one such moment recently, experiencing a 36 percent hike in the cost of health insurance for its employees.
At a meeting last Wednesday, Tiffin council members considered whether any of the increase should be passed on to workers.
In the end, the answer was no.

Parents still don’t understand SBG

Report shows interpreting grades on PowerSchool continues to stymie

SOLON– Parents just don’t understand.
A year didn’t do a lot to improve the comprehension of standards-based grading (SBG) for parents in the Solon Community School District (SCSD).
An SBG report presented at the April 14 meeting of the Solon school board showed that parents participating in a spring survey have not significantly improved their understanding of what their student is learning.
“We definitely need to do a better job helping them understand PowerSchool,” Director of Instruction and Technology Matt Townsley told board members. “That continues to be a concern.”

New SMS, performing arts center, and what else?

Estimates still need tweaking as district prepares for bond issue

SOLON– It’s safe to say the Solon Community School District (SCSD) is approaching the starting gate in the race toward a possible September bond issue.
With a $25 million spending target and conceptual plans for a new performing arts center and middle school in hand, the members of the Solon school board met with architects last week to continue the groundwork for significant facilities projects.

Long tenured administrator accepts Florida post

Lippincott leaving for warmer weather

SOLON– It’s been over eight years since Cassandra Lippincott first said hello to Solon.
Now it’s time to say goodbye.
Lippincott, the city’s third city administrator and its longest tenured, announced last week she has accepted a position with the city of Wildwood, Fla., and will be leaving in April.
Lippincott came to head up Solon’s city government in November 2005, following in the footsteps of the first city administrator, Brandy Forbes, and her successor, Tracey Mulcahey.
The city created the position in the spring of 2000.

SCSD calendar committee frustrated with process

High school principal drops out of group’s leadership role

SOLON– The committee charged with making recommendations for the Solon district’s start and end of school year is frustrated with the process.
And high school principal Nathan Wear has accepted responsibility for the poor communication and stepped down as chair of the group.
Calendar committee members Brandi Radcliffe and Tom Altman appeared before the Solon school board at its March meeting to clarify the role of the committee during the events leading up to the approval of a 2014-2015 school calendar in February.

Missing piece (land) now found for district

Potential site for new middle school purchased

SOLON– The Solon Community School District (SCSD) was looking for a new building site.
Now it has one.
At a regular meeting Monday, Feb. 10, Solon school board members approved a $450,000 purchase agreement for approximately 11 acres of land owned by Don and Yvonne Epley west of the high school.
Board members also set a March public hearing date for a lease agreement which will allow the Epleys to maintain their current residence for up to two years.

When does the door close on open enrollment?

OE providing most of district growth

Solon Economist

SOLON– The Solon school board is happy with the way a recently-adopted open enrollment policy is working.
The district closed open enrollment for the second grade at Lakeview Elementary earlier in the year based on targets established for each grade level. All other grade levels are still accepting new students. March 1 is the deadline to file an open enrollment request with the district.

Earth moved for new playground location

City not waiting for permission to divert FEMA funds

SOLON– It’s time to put Randall Park back together.
At last week’s meeting, members of the Solon City Council voted to finance the relocation of playground equipment at Randall Park with the expectation that federal funds will cover much of the cost.
The park has been inactive most of the year after spring floods wiped out the sand volleyball court and scoured away playground surfaces.

Spartans to face No. 1 Decorah

Solon defeats West Delaware 49-20

SOLON– Solon put the hurt on the West Delaware Hawks Monday night, setting up a date with No. 1 Decorah Friday, Nov. 8, in a Class 3A football quarterfinal at a site yet to be announced.
In a physically dominating performance, Solon defeated West Delaware 49-20 in a second round match-up that saw the Spartans leading 35-0 at half.
Both the Hawks and the Spartans came into the game ranked and with 9-1 records, but Solon controlled the game from the onset, blocking a punt, knocking out the West Delaware quarterback and putting the clamps on one of the leading rushers in the state.

Yellow doesn’t mean stop

DOT agrees to removal of flashing yellow at Highway 1 and Main Street

SOLON– A yellow traffic signal means to proceed with caution.
Not enough people traveling Highway 1 through Solon have been able to grasp the concept.
The Solon City Council last week agreed to proceed with a project funded by an Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) grant which will remove the flashing yellow lights which stretch across the Highway 1 intersection of with Main Street.

Gimme shelter

Parks & Rec. request to build shelter caught in scramble for funds

SOLON– A splash pad was out of the question– too expensive.
Ball diamonds would cost $25,000 each.
So with donations in hand, the Solon Parks and Recreation Commission went before the Solon City Council last week to ask for permission to spend $16,200 on a modest, open-air park shelter at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area (SRNA).
It wasn’t as easy as it might have sounded.
