Twice as nice! Solon boys and girls both head to state

Boys win regional Monticello meet; girls third

MONTICELLO Again, using a mix of veterans and freshmen and a pack of runners so close they could almost tag teammates around them, Solon is sending both boys and girls cross country teams to the 2020 state meet.
The Class 3A girls race is at 3:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 30, on Lakeside Municipal Golf Course, in Fort Dodge. The boys hit the course at 4 p.m.

Spartans are WaMaC champs

Boys and girls show depth at conference meet in Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG– Another big meet? Another near sweep for Solon’s cross country program, and an individual championship for senior Kiersten Conway, at the Thursday, Oct. 15, WaMaC meet in Williamsburg.

Spartans take all four races at North Linn

Boys edge Marion with fifth runner Girls pack five scoring runners in the top 15

TROY MILLS– Twin wins– no, make that four– on Saturday sent Solon’s cross country teams into the postseason on a high note. In a battle of Class 3A leaders, No. 4 Solon’s boys edged No. 2 Marion 45-47 for the North Linn Invitational title Saturday, Oct. 10. Second-ranked (2A) Tipton was third, with sixth-ranked (2A) Williamsburg fourth.

Team depth comes through again at Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG– Solon’s boys were just a point out of first…. with the Lady Spartans running to the championship, in a battle of ranked Class 2A and 3A cross country rivals, in Williamsburg. Though still the regular season, runners and coaches know the postseason approaches soon.

Twin thirds for Solon girls, boys XC

KALONA Three laps through the school grounds and nearby woods at Hillcrest Academy yielded third-place finishes for Solons boys and girls cross country teams, Monday, Oct. 5.

Solon boys, girls sweep Anamosa XC meet… ALL four races

ANAMOSA– Get out the broom. It was a clean sweep. Solon’s seventh-ranked Class 3A girls ran away with the title across Anamosa’s cross country course Saturday, Sept. 26. The fourth-ranked boys followed suit with a solid victory, too. And just to drive home the meaning of “team depth,” the junior varsity (JV) boys and girls did likewise! This was Solon’s second tour of the hilly Anamosa course. In their season opener, Aug. 29, each varsity team was third.

Boys tie for title, tiebreaker forces second

Girls win division at Ballard invite

BALLARD– The anticipated cross country showdown, between Class 3A’s No. 1 Ballard Bombers girls and No. 7 Solon’s Lady Spartans was not to be. The Sept. 14 near upset, though, came from Solon’s No. 5 3A boys, who went down to the wire with back-to-back state 1A champions Madrid.

First and second at Spartan Cross Country Invitational

SOLON– Approaching midseason, Solon’s cross country teams are leaning heavily on their depth to finish at– or near– the top of the standings.
That was driven home at Solon’s Sept. 21 home meet, at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area. Varsity boys shook off a one-point bump to second from their last meet to a close first place this week. With three top-10 runners, the Spartans pushed past Bettendorf, and a 52-59 win. In the junior varsity (JV) meet, they were second, 30-39 to Mount Vernon-Lisbon.

Clean sweep

Solon XC boys, girls and JV all win at Tipton

TIPTON– The cold and rain were certainly not welcome, but the results made it worth the soggy wait for Solon runners and fans at the Tipton Invitational Cross Country Meet Sept. 8.
Solon came home with wins in not only the varsity girls’ and boys’ race, but both junior varsity (JV) events, as well.
The coaches call that hard work and reaching a goal.

Wave of the future? Kind of confusing

Girls 2nd, boys 4th at divided Bob Brown Invitational

IOWA CITY– Solon’s girls finished second, with the boys cross country teams taking fourth, in a revamped version of Regina’s Bob Brown Invitational Cross Country meet, Sept. 3.
Trouble is… they only ran directly against about half the runners there.

Boys, girls each run 3rd, in cross country season kickoff

ANAMOSA– Same meet… different look, as Solon’s cross country teams opened the 2020 season. Usually held in midseason, the Anamosa Invitational was first on the calendar this year. It ushered in a new look, as COVID-19 precautions meant different training, team transportation, meet preparation, social distancing on the course and masks on many– certainly not all– spectators in the Aug. 29 meet.

No school? No spring sports. And no track

SOLON– Everyone hoped for better.
In the face of the growing COVID-19 pandemic, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds called on schools in mid-March to shut down on-site education. Spring sports– girls’ and boys’ track, soccer and golf¬– were suspended.
Still, a framework existed for a possible three-meet end of season finish had there been a return to the classroom
