Girls run away with Creek title

Gunnells adds to her record for shot put

TIFFIN– With wins in seven events, Solon’s girls ran away with the Creek Classic Relays track title April 10 in Tiffin. In three of those events, the Lady Spartans got the win– and second place– on their way to 168 team points. Mount Vernon was second (123) in the team chase. From there, the field strung out with South Tama and Williamsburg (each with 94 points), Clear Creek Amana (86 1/2), Mid-Prairie (67), Independence (54) and Center Point-Urbana (45 1/2).

Lady Spartans run away at Tipton

fourth place at J-Hawk Relays

CEDAR RAPIDS– Balance through the lineup and three key event champions kept the Spartans close in the 2015 J-Hawk Relays April 4 at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids.
Solon’s fourth place finish followed a runaway team title at Tipton earlier in the week.
Wins from Emma Moss in the 400-meter hurdles (1:10.24), Josie Durr in the high jump (5’2), Shelby Gunnells in the shot put (44’5) and points in eight other events kept Solon’s Class 3A girls in the mix throughout the meet, which featured larger, mostly 4A schools.

Lady Spartans tackle field at early WaMaC East indoor meet

MOUNT VERNON– Coming off the WaMaC East Division meet March 21 at Cornell College, Solon’s girls can point to throws and longer sprints as a couple bright spots heading toward the season’s first outdoor action March 31 at Tipton.
Team scores are not kept during the WaMaC indoor meets; with coaches experimenting with their lineups and some schools in the middle of spring break. But it does provide a peek at the strengths and potential weak spots once the outdoor season begins.

IDNR stocking Lake Macbride, Pleasant Creek with larger walleyes

DES MOINES– Walleyes stocked this week will help fisheries biologists in future stocking decisions. Spawned this past spring, then raised at the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Lake Rathbun hatchery, the eight-inch advanced fingerlings join walleyes already in Pleasant Creek Lake, Lake Macbride and five other Iowa lakes introduced as tiny, day-old fry.

Solon to host state qualifier Oct. 23

XC girls finish fifth at WaMaC meet

IOWA CITY– A tough field faces Solon’s girls, as state qualifying cross country meets are held around the state this week. Only the top three teams– and top 10 individual runners– from each class move on to the Nov. 1 state meet in Fort Dodge.
The Lady Spartans face four ranked schools in 3A, but teams they have run against this season. Solon– ranked in the top-15 for several weeks earlier this season– would have to knock off at least two... and hold off any late season surprise team... to return to state.

Prelude to postseason: Girls sixth at North Linn

TROY MILLS– It will take a couple leaders to push the pack as Solon’s cross country season races into the home stretch. Thursday’s WaMaC conference meet is followed by the state qualifying meet one week later.
Leading into that stretch, the Spartans are coming off the North Linn meet, with 18 (girls) and 19 (boys) full teams and several incomplete (less than five runners) squads circling the crowded Troy Mills campus. The boys were 11th, with just two top-50 runners in the crowded 1A through 3A field. The girls edged Central Clinton of DeWitt for the sixth spot.

Pumpkin picking

A midseason morale boost for Solon cross country team

SOLON– Mid-season in cross country. Each week, another meet or two. Another 200 runners. Training miles pile up. Progress? Some, but you want more. Sometimes you need to stop– and smell the pumpkins.
Well, pick them anyway.
With meets nine days apart, Solon’s boys and girls cross country team detoured from the grassy course to the pumpkin patch last week. Almost 60 bodies bent, reached, cut, pulled, dragged, tossed and loaded pumpkins on to hay wagons at the Glenn Shima farm west of Solon. The results of their work day are on display… and for sale… 2-1/2 miles west of Solon on Highway 382.

Girls take second at Williamsburg

SOLON– The mid-week pumpkin patch detour did not disrupt the schedule. There are still meets to run, as conference (Oct. 16) and districts (Oct. 23) loom ahead. Solon’s girls racked up a runner-up finish in the four-school Williamsburg invitational Sept. 29. The boys were fourth there in a five-team field.

Boys sixth, girls seventh at Anamosa Invitational

Düster places 16th, Weetman 25th in run around lake

ANAMOSA– In a rainy fall, muddy hills and low-lying prairie paths around Central Park Lake mean slippery footing for the annual Anamosa Invitational cross country race. This fall, good turf and dry hills meant great running conditions.
Solon’s boys were sixth in the 13-team competition, paced again by junior Simon Düster. The girls were seventh in a field with five ranked 3A and 2A competitors, with junior Trisha Coberly again running lead for the Lady Spartans.

Girls third, boys fifth at Benton roundhouse run

Key to success? Run with the pack

ATKINS– The pack is there. The task before Solon is to slide it up the finish list a little higher.
On their way to a third-place team finish at the Benton Cross Country Invitational Sept. 13, Solon’s girls had all five scoring runners within 16 seconds of each other. The boys pack stretched a little wider, on their way to fifth place in the nine-team Roundhouse Trail ‘Run Through the Woods’ in Atkins.

Folkerts, Coberly shoulder to shoulder

Cross country girls 4th, boys 5th at Bob Brown Classic

IOWA CITY– Heat and humidity took its toll.
Facing 90-degree late afternoon temperature, meet officials rolled back the start times and combined the fields at the Sept. 4 Bob Brown Classic in Iowa City. The mercury was closer to 80 by the 6 p.m. varsity and junior varsity girls 4 kilometer race, and when the boys stepped to the line for their combined 5k race about 35 minutes later on the University of Iowa’s Ashton Cross Country Course.

Crowded field at Prairie for Cross Country opener

CEDAR RAPIDS– The first cross country meet of the season was nowhere to be, if you fear crowds. Runners from 18 schools were on the course at Prairie High School Saturday, Aug. 30.
The mix of 4A, 3A and 2A competition was a good early season test for Solon. Overall, the girls were 11th in the varsity team race, though third in the five-team Orange Division, one of three which were broken down according to school enrollments. The boys finished fifth in their six-team Orange division, 15th overall.
