Learning after dark

Penn Science Night generates third year of excitement

NORTH LIBERTY– Generating electricity, building skyscrapers and simulating laparoscopic surgery: today’s elementary students are exploring science in surprising new ways.
That is the purpose of Penn Elementary School’s Science Night. Held Feb. 26 in North Liberty, this was the third annual event geared toward encouraging students to learn how fun science and experimentation can be.

On the Flip side

North Liberty salon has new owner, new look, and some new stylists

NORTH LIBERTY– Aubrey Holsinger has a vision of beauty.
She also has short-term and long-term goals, an optimistic attitude and a lot of energy– all traits she has put to use in re-imagining Flip Salon and Spa in North Liberty.
Located in Beaver Kreek since 2002, Flip Salon has been treating customers to hair makeovers, massages and manicures for quite some time. Holsinger bought the business almost one year ago, just seven weeks before she was due to give birth to her first child.

Solon exchange students find a home away from home

SOLON– Iowa is a long way from the mountains of Kyrgyzstan.
But for Aizhamal Nazhimidinoval and Ernis Sultanov, Solon has come to feel a lot like home; at least for now.
The two foreign exchange students are juniors at Solon High School (SHS) this year, as part of the World Link organization and its international FLEX program. Aizhamal is living with the Paula and Jeff Sears family, and Ernis with the Kris and Jerry McAtee family.

NL Council to rename 965

NORTH LIBERTY– What’s in a name?
The North Liberty City Council believes renaming Highway 965 through North Liberty will create more convenience, a greater sense of community for residents and wider recognition for people passing through.
Therefore, the council unanimously approved the process by which officials will re-name the town’s main north-south thoroughfare.
In the last year or two, members of the council have occasionally expressed a desire to call the road something other than Highway 965.

Eagle eyes

Another successful Bald Eagle Watch & Expo

NORTH LIBERTY– They came to learn about the birds and the bees– as well as the spiders, snakes and other Iowa wildlife, at the fourth annual Bald Eagle Watch & Expo, held Feb. 6, in North Liberty and along the Coralville Reservoir.
The free annual event, co-hosted by the Iowa City Bird Club, Iowa Audubon Society, Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Wildlife Diversity Program and the Army Corps of Engineers Rock Island District, provides kids’ activities, guest lecturers and an opportunity to join others in sneaking peeks at the bald eagles roosting and flying near the Coralville Dam.

No vaping allowed

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty City Council took the first step in banning electronic cigarettes in the community’s public spaces.
At its March 8 meeting, the five-member council unanimously approved the first reading of an ordinance amendment to ban vapor products, commonly referred to as e-cigarettes, in the city’s designated smoke-free places.
“It was one of the shortest ordinance I’ve ever drafted,” City Attorney Scott Peterson told the council.

“Blessed to be a blessing”

Solon-area family gains much by giving

SOLON– It started as an alternative to the traditional beach-destined spring break trip.
It turned into a life of service to God and humanity.
In 2012, when the Treloar family of rural Solon was in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for a spring break, they met a girl there who inspired them to make their next year’s vacation a mission trip to Haiti instead. Though the island experienced a devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake three years before, the impoverished and destroyed country had not been sufficiently restored.

East side development hits new school zone

Scanlon family prepares to develop near North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– Everybody knows by now: if you build a high school, they will come.
The North Liberty City Council made it official at its Feb. 23 meeting, with the approval of a preliminary plat for a 60-acre subdivision to be built next to the new Liberty High School.

Garner sixth graders create Future City entry

CEDAR RAPIDS– “Waste Not, Want Not” was the old adage providing inspiration, but teams of middle school students went far beyond the common platitude to demonstrate their plans for solid waste management in the future.
It was part of the 2016 Future City Competition, an annual, nationwide program created by DiscoverE that encourages sixth, seventh and eighth grade students to study and employ STEM skills– science, technology, engineering and math– to solve a real-world problem.

Grease on down the road

Fats and oils clogging up in winter weather

SOLON– Have you heard?
Grease is the word.
And the City of Solon would like you to stop putting it down the drain.
Fats, oils and grease (FOG) are accumulating in the city’s sewer system, and when they reach the treatment plant during cold spells, it’s causing difficulties.
As a result, Public Works Director Scott Kleppe is hoping to educate the public about alternate disposal methods.

No snow necessary

Fun bests the blahs in first annual Beat the Bitter Winter Games

NORTH LIBERTY– Although Midwesterners, Iowans are apparently not very good at winter.
That was the beginning of a discussion that ended with a plan for action to create “Beat the Bitter Winter Games and Good Cheer,” North Liberty’s newest community celebration.
The inaugural event took place Saturday, Feb. 6, with activities to encourage area residents to come outside, get moving, spark some new friendships and warm up to winter as best they could.

First reading of ordinance to lower minimum wage for minors

TIFFIN– They wondered why they were discussing it again.
Tiffin City Council members Jim Bartels and Mike Ryan both said Tiffin’s lack of action against Johnson County’s new minimum wage ordinance should have settled the issue in November.
However, the item was back on the council’s Feb. 2 agenda, after councilor Al Havens proposed a tiered wage to allow employers to pay people under age 18 the state minimum of $7.25 per hour.
