Lori Lindner

Nielsen elected first female mayor of North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– The Nov. 4 election brought big changes to the political make-up of the nation’s congress, with Republicans taking many state-level races by storm over Democrat candidates and seizing control of the United States Senate.
It also brought a shake-up to the leadership in the community of North Liberty.

Supervisors like NL-based Moxie solar company

County gives consensus for powering Secondary Roads building

NORTH LIBERTY– A dawning North Liberty business has just been granted a bright opportunity.
The Johnson County Board of Supervisors sought renewable energy sources to power its new Secondary Roads building. Moxie Solar, based in North Liberty, was one of five entities to submit proposals on the project. The county narrowed its choice to three companies, and during the board’s Oct. 9 discussion, Moxie Solar came out on top.
Jason Hall, founder of Moxie Solar, said his company is eager to work with the county.

Zombie apocalypse no match for ZASC team

NORTH LIBERTY– Are you ready for the attack of the killer zombies?
Even if you don’t believe in that possibility, there are other potential disasters– catastrophic floods, dangerous storms, or a power grid failure, for example– that could devastate neighborhoods, communities or entire regions in a matter of hours.
Whatever the cause, Guy Cain, John Watson and their team of survival specialists want you to be prepared for any eventuality. The two conducted a day-long survival skills workshop at the North Liberty Recreation Center on Saturday, Oct. 25, to an audience of about 20.

NL to conduct special census

Stand up, be counted

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty will move forward with a special population census, even though it will pay twice what was expected.
“The cost came in a little higher than we initially thought,” said City Administrator Ryan Heiar to the city council last Tuesday. “But the return on investment is still very favorable to us.”

Real Deals on Home Décor

Home décor store opens in North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty business owner Peg Carr wants everyone to be allured by their home, wherever they live.
In mid-September, Carr opened Real Deals on Home Décor in North Liberty, at 225 Beaver Kreek Centre (near the Brown Bottle restaurant). Carr had been working in the Iowa City Real Deals on Home Décor location for about two years when the franchise came up for sale this spring.
“I didn’t have that on my radar at all,” said the Solon resident. “But after my husband and I thought about it more, it made sense.”

Tried and true, or fresh and new?

NL voters will be asked to choose Nov. 4

NORTH LIBERTY– The candidates for North Liberty mayor set the dichotomy between themselves early in an Oct. 8 forum held in the North Liberty City Council chambers.
Incumbent North Liberty Mayor Gerry Kuhl will face resident Amy Nielsen in the Nov. 4 election.
In his opening statement, Kuhl said that while he brings years of background in city government to the chair, his opponent has never served on a city board or commission.

NL engineer, inventor creates must-have baby safety product

NORTH LIBERTY– Gerald Beranek of North Liberty has always had a knack for solving everyday problems, consistently putting to use his background and education in mechanical engineering.
It was an everyday problem that led him to design and create his new product that is suddenly booming in the baby world; the Vusee monitor shelf.
As expectant parents, Beranek and his wife were setting up the baby’s nursery about eight months ago.
“When my wife asked me to put up the baby monitor, I wasn’t sure where it should go,” said Beranek. “Basically, there was no good place for it.”

North Liberty Community Pantry awarded challenge grant for community garden project

NORTH LIBERTY– A new project in North Liberty will bring growth to the community in a whole new way.
In September, the North Liberty Community Pantry was awarded a $38,850 challenge grant from the Wellmark Foundation in order to develop a community garden. Now, pantry supporters and director Tina DuBois are in the process of raising the required matching funds, which must be pledged by Dec. 15.

Tiffin: Park Ridge PAD under reconsideration

TIFFIN– Unsure of how to answer a number of requests from a developer, the Tiffin City Council held a special work session to discuss them.
Kevin Hochstedler presented the Park Ridge Planned Area Development (PAD) to the council Sept. 10 for a two-phase, eight-home subdivision on 31 acres off Park Road in Tiffin. Its location on the eastern edge of Tiffin’s current municipal boundaries puts it inside city limits, but about half a mile from the city’s current public utility lines.

NORTH LIBERTY– Even little fish in a big pond can make a huge splash, when kids are involved.

NL council moves against P&Z, staff recommendations

NORTH LIBERTY– The City Council does not often deviate from staff recommendations.
But last week, they did just that in approving the preliminary plat for a new residential development that will contain a cul-de-sac street.
Property owner Tor Niklaus has proposed the construction of Liberty Farm, a 24-lot residential subdivision located along the east side of Highway 965 near its intersection with Pheasant Lane. The North Liberty city staff, including City Planner Dean Wheatley, recommended a condition to the plat’s approval.
