Wastewater plant, highway turn lanes part of marathon Tiffin City Council meeting

TIFFIN– A reflection of the city’s rapid growth, the Tiffin City Council was bombarded with development issues at last week’s meeting.
It took nearly four hours to address them all.
Wastewater plant

New Tiffin development to include septics

TIFFIN– Is it worth $200,000 to follow one’s own rules?
That was the question facing Tiffin City Council at its Sept. 10 meeting, when developer Kevin Hochstedler presented an overview of his proposed Park Ridge residential development to be located off Park Road (formerly Jasper Avenue).
The 31-acre development is only going to contain six to eight high-end homes, Hochstedler said.

Becky's Mindful Kitchen

Better eating, one food group at a time

JOHNSON COUNTY– Becky Schmooke gives new meaning to the term “food for thought.”
In fact, the proprietor of Becky’s Mindful Kitchen Cookery School loves to teach everyone new ways to think about their food.
Schmooke is a personal food consultant with the mission of raising awareness about the foods we consume, where they come from, how they are processed, and how they affect our overall well-being.
Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 24, Schmooke said she had always eaten well and exercised, but the auto-immune disorder in her body took her by surprise.

Flying Colors

OXFORD– It’s a colorful way to make some green.
Clear Creek Elementary (CCE) will host the second annual CCE Color Fun Run/Walk 5K Saturday, Sept. 27, at 9 a.m., and the public is invited.
The race/walk is open to anyone who wants to have fun and is up for helping a good cause.
CCE’s Parent Teacher Group (PTG) was searching for a way to involve more families in its annual school-wide fundraisers. PTG members often heard similar comments from parents when it came time for kids to sell wrapping paper, magazines, chocolate or other traditional fundraising products door-to-door.

NL council questioned about city’s sign regulations

NORTH LIBERTY– “You may have noticed North Liberty is tough on signs.”
North Liberty City Planner Dean Wheatley offers this initial statement in a website tutorial on the improper display of signs around town.
People have noticed, in fact, and some think the city is even a bit extreme.
Rob Hajek, owner of North Liberty remodeling business Home Repair Team and HRT Building, came before the council last Tuesday to ask if the city would consider changes to its sign ordinance to accommodate businesses like his that use yard signs as a promotional tool.

North Liberty: land to expand

$15.3 million wastewater expansion underway

NORTH LIBERTY– After just six years, North Liberty is facing another expansion of its wastewater treatment plant.
At its Aug. 12 meeting, the North Liberty City Council approved the purchase of 28.8 acres from Four D’s Acres, LLC. The $864,000 purchase– $30,000 per acre– of land east of the existing wastewater facility will accommodate the planned expansion, said North Liberty Wastewater Superintendent Dave Ramsey.

Tiffin begins planning for new waste- water facility

Planning ahead so sewer isn’t a drain

TIFFIN– As one of the fastest growing small towns in the state, it’s tricky to meet infrastructure needs without getting in debt too deep, too fast.
That’s why Tiffin administration and city council has already put in motion the process for addressing over-worked wastewater facilities.

Tiffin will cease free lawn-watering meters

Lush green lawns cost cash

TIFFIN– A utility program aimed at saving money for Tiffin residents has been discontinued due to confusion about the rules.
Last April, the City of Tiffin offered residents the chance to obtain a separate water meter exclusively for the purpose of watering lawns and outdoor foliage, which saved them having to pay sewer charges on that amount of usage. As the city replaced old water meters with new, electronically-read versions, the old meters were saved rather than discarded.

LOST ballot language set

JOHNSON COUNTY– All the votes are in… except for those that really count.
All Johnson County voters will now determine the fate of a proposed Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) this Nov. 4.
The Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 on Wednesday, Aug. 27, to set the election date and to limit the LOST to 10 years if it passes.

Work slowed, but still underway

Weather, floods delay Mehaffey Bridge replacement project

JOHNSON COUNTY– The bridge may take longer than expected.
Replacing Mehaffey Bridge over the Iowa River between Solon and North Liberty is a four-stage project that began last spring, with an anticipated completion date of November 2014. However, excessive rainfall earlier this season brought water levels under the bridge too high for construction to take place, delaying work by weeks.

Supervisors approve plat for rural Solon subdivision

Macbride Pointe set for additional development

SOLON– Prepare for more development west of Solon.
Developer Mark Pattison, of Fore Pattisons LLC, came before the Johnson County Board of Supervisors for approval of a preliminary plat to continue development of Macbride Pointe, a rural subdivision on the north side of Highway 382 near its intersection with Ely Road.

Swisher Fun Days 2014

Community event celebrates supporting local veterans

SWISHER– With kids’ games and a vendor fair, a horseshoe tournament and cow chip bingo, and especially a weekend full of free live music, Swisher Fun Days truly is a fun way to support veterans.
The 2014 Swisher Fun Days weekend was held Aug. 1 and 2 in the small town of 879 people. It’s been a community tradition for so long, even organizers have a hard time pinning down the number of years the free event has taken place.
“I do know it has been at least 28 years,” said parade organizer Gary Palas.
