North Bend Elementary hosts first Powder Fun Run

NORTH LIBERTY– After a bitter winter, students and their families were motivated to get outside and kick up their heels.
Over 450 participants joined in North Bend Elementary’s first annual 5K and 1 Mile Powder Fun Run fundraiser held Saturday, April 12, in North Liberty.
“This was a phenomenal turnout for our first event,” said co-organizer Angie Rummel. “We felt the event was very successful. Even though it was a bit windy, the temps warmed up for us and the rain– and snow– stayed away. After having such a long and cold winter, it was great to be outside and get active.”

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty has been given the green light to expand its boundaries.
The state’s City Development Board voted unanimously to approve North Liberty’s application to annex a total of 567.7 acres on the city’s current southeast side.
The city received voluntary annexation petitions from property owners last fall, and North Liberty officials were poised to grant them, due to the anticipated new Iowa City school district high school to be built in that area.

This year’s festival is scheduled for Saturday, July 12, from noon until 10 p.m., and will be held in Centennial Park near the corner of Jones Boulevard and St. Andrews Drive in North Liberty.

Tiffin mayor helps raise awareness of elderly hunger issues

IOWA CITY– For many elderly people, a hot meal can be difficult to come by.
That’s why Elder Services, Inc., (ESI) of Iowa City, has been delivering meals to Johnson County homebound residents through its Meals on Wheels program since 1980. To raise awareness of senior hunger and nutrition issues, ESI participated in March for Meals, a national campaign held last month initiated by the Meals on Wheels Association of America.

JOHNSON COUNTY– They billow on tree branches and tumble rampantly across otherwise pastoral terrain. Their creation consumes 12 million barrels of the country’s oil supply annually, only to be used once and stuffed en masse under kitchen sinks everywhere. They account for the deaths of 100,000 marine animals worldwide each year, according to the Surfrider Foundation. Each one will remain on earth for the next 200 to 1,000 years.

The Johnson County Secondary Roads department placed a weight embargo on the bridge and reduced the speed effective March 11, due to too much movement as cars were driving over the bridge that is currently under construction.

Rettig looks toward another county term

JOHNSON COUNTY– While Janelle Rettig already believes she lives in the best place on earth, she won’t stop trying to make it better.
Rettig has announced her intent to run for re-election to the Johnson County Board of Supervisors this November. Appointed in 2009 to fill the vacancy left by the passing of supervisor Larry Meyer, Rettig was then elected to the seat in a 2010 special election, and re-elected in November of the same year.
“Some people think I’ve already served two terms because I’ve been through two elections,” she joked.
