Scholarship process to be improved for Class of 2015

SOLON– Though school is out for summer and fall classes seem yet too distant to worry about, now is the right time to be thinking about college finances.
In addition to giving a first-year college scholarship to all Solon graduates who apply, Solon Dollars for Scholars awards Continuing Education Scholarships (CES) to Solon alumni in their second, third and fourth years of college. This summer, the volunteer organization has $32,000 in its CES coffers for those current college enrollees. The deadline for this year’s CES applications is June 15.

Reducing plasticity one grocery bag at a time

Local grocer is doing small part to save environment

SOLON– People might be surprised to learn that planet Earth has a local warrior fighting one of its biggest battles right here in little Solon, Iowa.
Former Solon resident Pam Landgrebe was surprised, at least, when she visited Sam’s Main Street Market a few weeks ago and found herself without a reusable bag. As an environmental advocate, it has become Landgrebe’s practice to forego single-use plastic bags when shopping, but she came to Sam’s unarmed with her own bags because this trip to the store was unexpected.
Equally unexpected was the offer of a free, reusable cloth bag instead.

NL storm sewer project brings costs overflows

Money in the drain

NORTH LIBERTY– It’s never good when a contractor’s bill is higher than original estimates.
It’s extra bad when the bill more than doubles.
That was the situation facing the North Liberty City Council at its May 27 meeting, when McClure Engineering project manager Kevin Bailey explained a change order to the city’s storm sewer improvements along Highway 965.

“Fun Days is done”

Annual celebration canceled for 2014 and future; parade, citywide garage sales still on

NORTH LIBERTY– After 35 years, the fun is over for North Liberty Fun Days.
Event committee chair Randy Mosier said Monday the four-day community celebration has been canceled.
“Fun Days is done,” Mosier said. “It wasn’t a decision we made lightly.”
This year’s planning committee came up against several difficulties, but ultimately, the group bottomed out at the weakened bottom line.
