School board approves $1.4 million property acquisition

New elementary school on the horizon

NORTH LIBERTY– Land on the outskirts of North Liberty could be home to a new elementary as early as the 2019-2020 school year, according to Iowa City Community School District officials.
However, the construction would likely push back development at another proposed elementary location.
At its July 26 meeting, the Iowa City School Board unanimously approved the $1,403,350 purchase of 21.59 acres on the northeast side of North Liberty near South Slope Cooperative Communications and just south of the Cedar Springs subdivision. Board member Lori Roetlin was absent from the meeting.

Trojans’ luck runs out

Prairie hands West its fifth state runner-up trophy

DES MOINES– The West High Trojans entered the 2016 Class 4A State Baseball Tournament as the No. 2 seed and with hopes of earning their first championship in the school’s 11th appearance in Des Moines.
However, a six-run inning by the Hawks of Cedar Rapids Prairie in the title game dashed those hopes and led to West’s third consecutive runner-up trophy and its fifth overall since 2009.

Solon upsets No. 1 seed Wahlert

DES MOINES– Well, why not?
Solon absolutely thumped the No. 1 seed in the opening round of the 3A baseball tournament Tuesday, advancing to a semifinal against Harlan (28-5) Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Principal Park in Des Moines.
The Spartans shelled Dubuque Wahlert, 12-2, in a game shortened to six innings by the mercy rule.
Solon jumped out to a first-inning lead right off the bat, but salted the game away with four-run spurts in the fifth and sixth innings. The Spartans loaded the bases with no outs in each of those innings.

A habit of volunteerism

SOLON– For Marcy and Larry Olson community service is just the right thing to do – whether it takes the form of Marcy’s food deliveries to seniors in Solon or Larry’s route transporting children with special needs to and from school.
If you ask them why they do it, they’ll reply: just because.
“I don’t really think about it, I guess,” Larry said. “It’s just something I do.”

SOLON– They were two Cool Hand Lukes.
But Solon’s Luke Ira got the better of Mount Vernon’s Luke Eldred and the Spartans advanced to a substate baseball final July 20 against Fairfield.

“New” church building celebrates 100 years

Sts. Peter and Paul holds special Mass to mark century

SOLON– It was a bright and sunny morning on Sunday, June 5, at Sts. Peter and Paul Chapel.
Across the road from the former Catholic church, a large tent was set up in a grassy area of the cemetery, the site of a special Mass featuring Most Rev. Martin J. Amos, DD, Bishop of the Diocese of Davenport.
At the conclusion of the service, a stream of young children carrying baskets filled with white and pink flower petals strew them in advance of a processional leading to altars situated on the edges of the cemetery.

Annual music fest leaves smaller footprint despite record number of attendees

By Shianne Fisher

NORTH LIBERTY– They descended on Centennial Park by the thousands, but dry ground and eco-friendly initiatives made it difficult for them to leave a mark.
An estimated 15,000 people attended North Liberty Blues & BBQ presented by South Slope Cooperative Communications last Saturday, where they enjoyed 13 food vendors, five bands and a host of kid-centered activities.
“It’s all been glowing reviews,” said North Liberty Communications Director Nick Bergus. “We’re really proud of the feedback we’ve gotten.”
Plus, he said, the weather was perfect.

The play went to the plate, where Tara Lance slid wide of the tag to give the Lady Spartans a sixth-inning 4-3 lead over Center Point-Urbana (CP-U).
In the top of the seventh, Solon added two more insurance runs, the first of which prompted Solon Head Softball Coach Jim White to leap in the air joyously and repeatedly along the third base sideline.

Meet your meat and its makers

NORTH LIBERTY– If you haven’t tasted some local chefs’ off-the-beaten-path barbecue, this Saturday is your chance.
Of the 13 food vendors serving at North Liberty Blues & BBQ presented by South Slope Cooperative Communications, two are as local as it gets, but you won’t find their fare in a restaurant.
T.C. Bonez Catering & BBQ, located off Mehaffey Bridge Road near Club 76, has been smoking Iowa-grown meats since 2003, and owner Todd Carr makes it a point to never miss a Blues.
“I’m so excited,” he said last week. “I wish it was here this weekend.”
