Solon softball 10-1

SOLON– The Solon Lady Spartan softball team is ranked No. 2 in Class 3A and collected its 10th win of the season over the weekend at the Solon Round Robin Tournament.
Solon pitched a shut-out against both its opponents, defeating Iowa City City High 11-0 and Highland 7-0.
Senior Emily Ira pitched seven innings, striking out 17 and allowing only one hit and two walks to get the win against Highland.

A nursery full of tails

a tale of everyday heroes

CORALVILLE– Each spring as the weather warms, calves, goats, and other furry farm animals take up residence among the flowers and trees at Forever Green garden center, delighting children for one weekend.
But this year, the nursery’s annual open house became more than just a way to celebrate the end of winter.
Last year, a Forever Green employee, Colin Waddick, was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia, a type of cancer that affects white blood cells inside the bone marrow.

TIFFIN– Commencement exercises for Clear Creek Amana High School were held at the high school in Tiffin on Sunday, May 24, with 141 seniors honored.
Two of the seven valedictorians, Trevor Toy and Tanner Bandy, made reference to life as a book. For this particular group of seniors, their books have an especially tragic footnote on their high school years.

MAQUOKETA– With an eye now on getting entries through to the 2015 State Co-Ed Track Meet, Solon’s girls brought home two more championships last week; a 40-plus point victory margin in the 16-team WaMaC conference meet in Maquoketa, and a similar win at Monticello.

Full hearts fill empty stomachs

NL’s Holy Trinity exceeds goal in fight against hunger

NORTH LIBERTY– If just 25¢ can buy a child one meal, imagine what $22,000 can do.
That’s how much North Liberty’s Holy Trinity Church members raised, with help from the entire community and 18 area business sponsors, to benefit Kids Against Hunger this year.
West High School senior Mareda Smith, daughter of Pastor Tim Smith and his wife Lisa, along with West High graduate Abby Heller, organized Holy Trinity’s event and led hundreds of congregation members and volunteers in a day-long packing session March 28.

NL pantry garden project gets off the ground with ribbon cutting

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Pantry is ready to cultivate a new generation of gardeners.
Community members officially celebrated the pantry’s new project, the Growing Together Garden, with a ribbon cutting, poetry reading and tree planting on Saturday, April 25. Funded by a $38,850 grant from the Wellmark Foundation and matching dollars raised throughout the community, as well as in-kind donations of time, materials and labor, the garden is an extension of the pantry’s services to provide food to those in need.

How to save a life

Two Solon seniors reach blood donation goal

SOLON– Could a teenager dare someone to help save a life?
It could, in the case of Ty Appleget and Preston Miller, two Solon High School seniors who challenged each other to become Gallon Grads.

Filling the gap

SolonFC tries to bridge between elementary and high school soccer

SOLON– Are you ready for some fútbol?
For more than 50 Solon kids and their families, the answer is a resounding “Yes!”
This is the second year for the SolonFC, a youth soccer club initiated by a few Solon parents who saw a gap in the action for kids who love soccer. While Solon’s Recreation Department runs spring and fall soccer leagues for children in preschool through grade six and Solon High School’s soccer teams pick up new freshmen each year, there were no local soccer opportunities for players in seventh or eighth grade.

Something’s brewing in the Corridor

Kirkwood Community College, NL business capitalize on home brewing popularity

CEDAR RAPIDS– When Kirkwood Program Developer Matt Murphy first started brewing his own beer two years ago, he had a lot of questions.
In search of answers, he turned to YouTube, and found dozens upon dozens of videos produced by a young beer enthusiast who went by the handle, terpsichoreankid.
“He was one of my biggest resources starting out,” Murphy said.
“This one guy” turned out to be someone right in his own backyard; Joe Williams, a home brewing expert and owner of the Marion and North Liberty home brew supply stores, BIY (Brew It Yourself).
