Spotlight on speech and drama

By Chris Umscheid
North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN — Mimes, intense drama, fractured fairytales and musical theater combined on the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) stage Thursday, Jan. 22, as the high school’s speech and drama students hosted their Speech Showcase Night.
Fourteen acts were scheduled; plenty to choose from, noted speech team director Christine Maas. “We have over four hours of material,” said Maas. The goal of the night was for each student to perform at least once.

Clippers knock off Bobcats, 55-41

TIFFIN– It’s a much better season this year for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) boy’s varsity basketball team.
With a 55-41 win over the Benton Community Bobcats on Tuesday, Jan. 27, the Clippers improved to 11-4 on the season and notched their fourth win in a row for the second time in the 2014-15 campaign.
In contrast, Steve Ottoson’s crew only posted six wins last season with 15 losses.
Jake Neubauer, a junior, led CCA against the Bobcats with 14 points while senior Drew Wagner put up a dozen, mostly in the tumultuous second half.

Would it motivate you to exercise more?
The staff at the North Liberty Recreation Center hope so.
It’s called Fitness On Demand, and it is now available at everyone’s fingertips.
For the next month, it’s absolutely free.

Solon will seek waiver

But new 2015-16 school calendar put together just in case

SOLON– Not so fast.
The Solon Community School District’s Board of Education was expected to make a decision on the start and end dates for the 2015-16 school year last Monday.
No decision was made.
Board members tabled the lone action item on the agenda for the Jan. 12 regular session, although Superintendent Sam Miller was instructed to proceed with applying to the Iowa Department of Education for a waiver to start school prior to Sept. 1.

Spartans claw back to beat Mount Vernon

It was the second win in a row for the Spartans and moved their record to .500 on the year. The varsity boys followed the win with another good performance, but unfortunately, in a two-point road loss at Dyersville Beckman, 68-66.

Ice fishing clinic lures outdoor crowd

JOHNSON COUNTY– It was a great day for fishing, even if the fish didn’t catch on.
About 22 participants joined Johnson County Conservation Program Director Brad Freidhof at F.W. Kent Park near Tiffin on Sunday, Jan. 11, to learn the basics of ice fishing and try their hands at catching the big one.
“We have phenomenal weather,” said Freidhof of the above-freezing temperatures and sunshine. “I was hoping that would turn the fish on today, but so far I’m not seeing that.”

Swisher’s Teresa Hafner relies on her positive attitude as she waits for a heart transplant

SWISHER– Teresa Hafner has dedicated much of her life to giving to others.
Now, she just wants one thing.
A heart.
Last March, the owner of Honey Creek Cottage assisted living facility in Swisher found herself in a battle she was unprepared for. After returning from a trip to Cancun, Mexico, with her husband, she learned her sister had been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City with heart failure.

It’s not so scary

AORN’S Teddy Bear Hospital informs public on role of OR nurses

Over 30 Solon area children, parents, and stuffed animals attended the Teddy Bear Hospital on Saturday, Nov. 8. The Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) put on the event held at Lakeview Elementary.

“I love this ground”

Local property owner fights City of North Liberty against eminent domain

CORALVILLE– Gary Weinman’s three children grew up on a pristine Johnson County acreage surrounded by farm fields. The family hiked and played in the timber among stands of mature trees where deer, foxes and wild turkeys still roamed unmolested. They waded barefoot in Muddy Creek for reprieve from the hot summer and skated across its frozen surface in winter. They worked to return five acres of row crops, through reseeding and restoration efforts, back into a rolling prairie landscape, ripe with native Iowa grasses and flowers as beautiful as they are ecologically important.
