A new era for Trojan football

New head coach, field and competition for 2014

IOWA CITY– The 2014 high school football season kicks off on Friday, Aug. 29, and for the West High Trojans, it will be the start of a new era on three counts.
First, after six seasons, head coach Brian Sauser has left the program for a position in Oklahoma. Sauser has been replaced by one of his assistants, Garrett Hartwig. Second, the old grass gridiron has been torn out and replaced by synthetic turf.
Third, the Trojans will no longer compete within the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC), but instead in Class 4A district play.

Sheedy traveling with God

Father Tim Sheedy brings his knowledge of the world to Solon

SOLON– Father Tim Sheedy’s experiences with the Catholic Church have taken him all across the globe. He’s seen the House of the Virgin Mary in Ephesus, Turkey. He’s visited the Holy Land in Israel three times. He even studied for three months in the Vatican. But none of these wonders compared to his visits to a small town with a population of just over 4,000.

Any good candy in there?

Community event celebrates supporting local veterans

SWISHER– With kids’ games and a vendor fair, a horseshoe tournament and cow chip bingo, and especially a weekend full of free live music, Swisher Fun Days truly is a fun way to support veterans.
The 2014 Swisher Fun Days weekend was held Aug. 1 and 2 in the small town of 879 people. It’s been a community tradition for so long, even organizers have a hard time pinning down the number of years the free event has taken place.
“I do know it has been at least 28 years,” said parade organizer Gary Palas.

Come on, feel the noise

TiffinFest 2014 to welcome biggest act yet

TIFFIN– Something big is about to hit the small town of Tiffin.
And it’s going to make a really loud noise when it does.
TiffinFest committee members Melissa Fontanini and Lyndsie Schnoor, co-owners of Bella Sala reception and banquet facility in Tiffin, didn’t hesitate when the opportunity came for their business to sponsor this year’s headline entertainment for the annual community festival.
