Roll the rock

39,000-pound boulder finds new home at Legion Park

SOLON– As a two-man crew from Holiday Wrecker & Crane prepared to move the 39,000-pound Solon Freedom Rock to its new home, a bald eagle flew overhead north of the Legion Veterans Memorial.
The small crowd of Solon Area Community Foundation and Solon American Legion members in attendance took that as a good sign.
The boulder, donated by the Leo Shima and Kevin Shima families, was relocated from a ditch near 140th Street off Polk Avenue to the Legion ballpark Thursday morning, Aug. 21.
The rock was tipped up its end and placed on a gravel base adjacent to the veterans memorial.

Feeding a community

NORTH LIBERTY– Turns out, there is such a thing as a free lunch.
And North Liberty served more than 3,700 of them over the summer.
North Liberty’s free Summer Lunch and Fun program celebrated its final weekday lunch on Friday, Aug. 14, with volunteer recognitions, cake and Dilly Bars for dessert and additional activities for kids, completing the program’s second successful year.

The secret to long life: “Just say, yes dear”

2015 honoree went from WW2 battlefields to Solon State Bank

SOLON– Don Erusha has been a part of the Solon community since taking on duties at the Solon State Bank in 1963, retiring as Executive Vice President in 2000, and has had a hand in several key endeavors since. For his contributions to Solon, Erusha was named one of two 2015 Seniors of the Year.
The 92-year old acknowledged his busy past. “I was (busy), but not anymore. I’m not doing very much around here anymore,” he said.
Erusha continues as a member of the Solon Area Community Foundation (SACF), an organization he helped start.

In the not-so-hot seat

CCA school board candidates run unopposed, make their cases for election to an empty room

OXFORD– Voters in the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District will have an easy time deciding whom to vote for in the school board of education election on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Four of CCA’s five board candidates are incumbents, and all five are running unopposed on the official ballot.
The lack of challenges in the race could account for the lack of public attendance at the forum held Tuesday, Aug. 11, at Clear Creek Elementary in Oxford.

CCA’s Friday night lights get a little help from a star

Clipper football kicks off the season in a big way with singer Jake McVey

TIFFIN– There are many ways to conduct a fundraiser, but when Clear Creek Amana (CCA) coach Matt Hughes went looking for a way to raise some additional money for the high school football program, he decided to go big.

Goodbye, Mrs. Sandersfeld

Lakeview first grade teacher Rosann Sandersfeld settles into retired life

SOLON– Three months after her retirement from teaching first grade at Lakeview Elementary School, Rosann Sandersfeld leafed through a book of student letters.
Printed painstakingly in pencil, the children thanked Mrs. Sandersfeld for her teaching career and urged her to enjoy retirement in the simplest of ways. Some hoped she’d be able to sleep in more and watch TV. Some, in a throwback to their first grade nutrition unit, implored their teacher to eat nuts and drink milk. All agreed, she must spend as many days as possible in pajamas.

Masons consecrate new Tiffin Elementary School with cornerstone ceremony

TIFFIN — When cathedrals were built across Europe thousands of years ago, the first stone placed was the cornerstone. Extreme importance was placed on it being square, level and plumb. Centuries later, laying the cornerstone became more of a symbolic process, as when George Washington presided over the Masons’ Masonic cornerstone ceremony for the United States Capitol building in 1793.
The Masons continue the tradition today, and performed the cornerstone ceremony for the Clear Creek Amana Community School District (CCA) at the new Tiffin Elementary on Sat., Aug 1.

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– After closing out a season with the most hits, runs, highest team batting average, and the most wins in the history of the program, the Clear Creek Amana Clippers put seven men on the WaMaC West All-Conference Baseball rosters.
The conference released its 2015 list on Thursday, July 23.
Nile Rourke, Tanner Bandy and Travis Bowman were named to the First Team for the West Division.

RAGBRAI rolls through Solon

Almost 20,000 cyclists ride into Solon July 24 for the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa

SOLON– A sense of excitement filled the air of Main Street for the second time in a week, as the long-anticipated Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI XLIII) made its way through Solon on July 24, right on the tail of the community’s annual Beef Days celebration (July 17-18).

This Was Their Year

Nearad, Ira combine to power Lady Spartans past No. 2 Benton

SOLON– It was the match-up everyone expected.
Benton Community and Solon had split a regular season doubleheader in Van Horne when the Bobcats were the number-one team in Class 3A, and the Lady Spartans were ranked second.
The rematch in the 3A softball championship game Friday at the Rogers Sports Complex near Fort Dodge didn’t disappoint, at least for Solon fans.
Senior Taylor Nearad’s two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning provided the margin of victory, and senior Emily Ira struck out 14 batters to power Solon past Benton to a final score of 3-1.

Sun shines on NL’s 2015 festival

NORTH LIBERTY– The barbecue pits and jamming musicians weren’t the only hot things at North Liberty’s annual Blues & BBQ festival this year.
Finally; the sun was warm, too.
It’s been awhile since the annual community celebration of summer– and all things barbecue, blues and family-friendly fun– has enjoyed a day without stormy weather. In 2011, 2013 and 2014, storms and heavy rains interfered enough with the grounds and equipment to cause the festival to be cancelled or called off early.
