Trojans’ 14 seniors to defend conference championship

IOWA CITY– Charlie Stumpff and his West High Trojans take to the diamond with 14 seniors on the roster for the 2014 season. Last year’s team went 33-8 overall and were 22-4 in Mississippi Valley Conference (Mississippi Division) contests.
Gone are Colin Baker, Reid Bonner, Ezra Reiners, Sam Scott, Josh Verry and Tanner Wilson, all 2013 grads. Reiners and Bonner were First Team All-State performers while Baker was a starting pitcher for three years.

Clippers gearing up for another season on the diamond

Two seniors to lead CCA team in tough WaMaC conference

TIFFIN– This will be the second season at the helm for coach Brent Henry and his Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity baseball team. In his debut year the Clippers were 13-25 overall and 9-19 for seventh-place in the WaMaC conference.
However, the numbers weren’t all bad. According to Henry, the team set the school record last year for team batting average (.285) and on base percentage (OBP, .377) since moving up to Class 3A. Also, the Clippers had the fewest offensive strikeouts in the WaMaC West.

Gilbaugh leads senior boys’ division

WASHINGTON– Iowa City West High track and field athletes Andrew Gilbaugh, Alexander Baller, Xavier Koch, Jacob Sanderson and Anfernee Frazier, competed in the Iowa Association of Track Coaches’ Iowa Pentathlon Championship 2014 held Tuesday, May 27, at Chase Field in Washington.
Gilbaugh won the senior boys’ division with 3,327 points.

Spurrell specializes in on-location photography, milestone sessions

NORTH LIBERTY– Sandi Spurrell loves babies. She is an artist quite skilled in drawing and graphic design. She adores children and families, enjoys meeting new people and making fast friends, and is killer with a camera.
Wrapped all up in one package, these qualities are what make Spurrell an excellent on-location photographer.
Spurrell’s journey through various stages of life and different facets of her career led her to start her own business, Sandi Spurrell Photography, run from her home in North Liberty. She is now accepting new clients.

“Fun Days is done”

Annual celebration canceled for 2014 and future; parade, citywide garage sales still on

NORTH LIBERTY– After 35 years, the fun is over for North Liberty Fun Days.
Event committee chair Randy Mosier said Monday the four-day community celebration has been canceled.
“Fun Days is done,” Mosier said. “It wasn’t a decision we made lightly.”
This year’s planning committee came up against several difficulties, but ultimately, the group bottomed out at the weakened bottom line.

Tiffin city officials heard from residents concerned about traffic patterns on a street leading to a newly-developing residential neighborhood; there is only one road in or out, and all traffic to the area will pass by Little Clippers, one of the community’s larger daycare centers.

CCA to consider new school attendance area boundaries

OXFORD– With a new elementary school scheduled to open in Tiffin in the fall of 2015, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school board of directors is beginning the process of evaluating and redefining attendance area boundaries.

NLPD to host bike rodeo June 13

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Police Department hopes to help kids entering kindergarten through eighth grade get off to a safe start this summer by hosting a free bike rodeo on Friday, June 13, from 2 until 4 p.m. in Penn Landing, 620 Pacha Parkway, just off Penn Street.
A bike rodeo is a non-competitive, fun event for kids. During the rodeo, kids will learn bike safety tips while cruising on a course set up to teach them important bike skills. Free bike helmets will be available while supplies last. Sugar Bottom Bikes will be on hand offering free bike inspections.

North Liberty group to host free summer lunch program for kids

NORTH LIBERTY– Organizers of a new free lunch program for North Liberty children are seeking volunteers and donations to help support the effort throughout the summer.
The new “Summer Lunch and Fun Program,” sponsored by the North Liberty Unity Coalition, is designed to reach all children up to 18 in need of a free, healthy meal.

DES MOINES– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) athletes competed in 15 events for the 2014 State Track & Field Championships held Thursday, May 22, through Saturday, May 24, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Mia Smith, Celine Fender, Corrine Schwarting and Natalie Brimeyer took their shuttle hurdle relay to a second place finish twice, both times (preliminary heat and finals) following in the footsteps of Mount Pleasant, which won the event. Fender, Tyhesia Simpson, Amy Brant and Brimeyer ran the 800-meter sprint medley relay to a fifth-place finish in 1:50.57.

DES MOINES– Iowa City West High sent 39 events to the State Track & Field Championships held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines from Thursday, May 22, through Saturday, May 25. The boys placed fifth overall in team points with 39 while the Women of Troy were 14th with 20.
The boys’ 4x800-meter relay of Wynton Karanja, Noah Brase, Daniel Gardarsson and Kaleb Greiner finished second in 10:12.35; Gardarsson was second in the 1,600-meter run in 4:16.15, while Andrew Gilbaugh, Wali Parks, Alex Baller and Greiner ran the distance medley relay to a second-place finish in 3:28.07.

Seniors lead the way against Waterloo East

IOWA CITY– Tuesday, May 20, was Senior Night for the West High Women of Troy and five of them put in seven of West’s 10 goals for a 10-0 win over struggling Waterloo East.
The bulk of the damage was done in the first half as West took a 9-0 lead into the break. Meredith Arpey nailed the final goal in the first minute of the second half for the victory.
